The key questions are whether your dog is properly contained and whether every connection, from the dog to the vehicle, is appropriate for the intended use.
Start with your dog and the trip
Measure your dog and check the product’s stated size and weight limits. Your dog should be able to settle comfortably in the restraint; in a crate, CDC guidance says the dog should be able to stand, sit, lie down and turn around. Consider temperament and behavior, too: a dog that resists confinement or cannot comfortably use a particular design may not be a good fit for it.
Choose for vehicle travel, not for a different transport setting. Airline or cargo requirements are separate from vehicle crash evidence. For air travel, check the airline’s policy and government requirements; CDC advises using an appropriate shipping crate for cargo and ensuring the pet can stand, sit and turn around inside it. Understand what crash-safety evidence does—and does not—show
A raised seat may help keep a dog contained or reduce distraction, but elevation by itself is not evidence of crash protection. Look for product-specific test results or certification, and verify the exact model, size, hardware and setup covered. A result for one configuration does not establish how another size, revision or installation will perform.

The Center for Pet Safety (CPS) lists products in its certified-products directory, including Away Pet Carrier; Cabela’s GunDog Kennel in Intermediate and Large; Gunner G1 Kennel in Small, Medium and Intermediate; Lucky Duck Lucky Kennel in Medium, Intermediate and Large; and PawsInCar carrier products. Historical CPS tests illustrate why the details matter. In its 2015 pet-seat pilot, CPS warned that a collar or walking harness is not a suitable crash-restraint connection, and that connecting a crash-tested harness to a structurally unsound product or ineffective attachment does not make the whole system safer. In CPS’s 2015 carrier study, results varied by product and connection: a Sleepypod Mobile Pet Bed used with a PPRS Handilock remained connected and contained the test simulant in one tandem test, while other tested carriers released, fractured or ejected their simulants. For crates, CPS’s 2015 report named the Gunner Kennel G1 Intermediate with 8-foot tie-down straps its top-performing crate in that study. The report used front-impact testing under ECE R-17 test conditions; it does not establish a current ranking or performance for every Gunner size, strap or installation. The report describes a 39.6 lb (18 kg) weighted block as part of the seatback test condition—a test-method detail, not a real-world injury statistic. CPS 2015 crate report
Check the complete restraint path
Evaluate the entire chain: how the dog is restrained inside the seat, carrier or crate, and how that product is secured to the vehicle. A strong harness cannot compensate for a weak product or connector; a robust crate is not secured if it can slide or shift.

- Do not use a collar or ordinary walking harness as the crash connection.
- Confirm which harness, tether, buckle, straps or other hardware the product requires, and whether those parts are included or separately specified.
- Check that the dog-to-product connection and product-to-vehicle connection are both described in the product instructions.
- Do not treat “crash-tested” as proof that every component or configuration has been tested together.
Match the restraint to your vehicle
Check compatibility with the actual seat belt, vehicle anchors, cargo area and seating arrangement where you intend to install the product. Follow the product’s installation instructions rather than assuming that a seat, carrier or crate can be secured the same way in every vehicle.
CDC advises that a dog riding on a vehicle seat should be in the back seat in a harness attached to the seat buckle. CDC also advises securing a crate so it cannot slide or shift and checking that it is ventilated. Compare practical features after safety and fit
Once fit, evidence and installation are clear, compare daily-use details: ventilation, access, cleaning, portability and how reliably the product contains your dog. For a crate, make sure its usable interior allows the dog to stand, sit, lie down and turn around. A convenient or comfortable design is valuable, but those features do not establish crash protection.

A practical selection checklist
- Measure your dog. Check the product’s limits and confirm your dog can use it comfortably; for a crate, confirm room to stand, sit, lie down and turn around.
- Identify the exact product configuration. Record the model, size and required connection hardware, then look for evidence that applies to that specific configuration.
- Trace every connection. Verify how the dog is retained and how the seat, carrier or crate is attached to the vehicle. Reject a setup that relies on a collar or ordinary walking harness as the crash connection.
- Check your vehicle and installation. Confirm the restraint fits the intended seating or cargo location and can be secured as the manufacturer directs.
- Assess everyday use and trip type. Check ventilation, access, cleaning and containment; evaluate airline or cargo requirements separately if those trips are planned.
