Measure the chair, sofa, or bed first; then choose an easy-care fabric for hair and dirt, a moisture-resistant treatment for occasional dampness, or a waterproof liner when liquids must not reach the upholstery.
No blanket can honestly be called universally hair-proof from the available evidence. Manufacturer and retailer descriptions explain construction and care, but there is no independent head-to-head test proving that one fabric releases dog hair better than all others. Use the specifications and decision steps below to match a throw to your home and your dog.

Start with the area your dog actually uses
A throw only protects furniture that it covers. Orvis advises a medium throw for a chair and a larger throw for a sofa or bed, while also recommending that shoppers check the exact product measurements and size up when uncertain. Measure the usable surface before comparing fabrics or colors.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMeasure for a chair
- Measure the seat from front to back and from one arm to the other.
- Add enough length to cover the front edge and enough width to reach or tuck around the sides.
- Compare those numbers with the blanket’s finished dimensions, not a generic label such as “medium.”
A throw that merely covers the cushion may leave the front edge, arms, or back exposed to hair and dirt. If your dog moves between the seat and the backrest, allow additional fabric for that movement.

Measure for a sofa
- Measure the width of the section your dog occupies, then measure from the top of the back through the seat to the front edge.
- Decide whether you want a seat-only cover or fabric that drapes over the back and arms.
- Choose a larger throw when the measurements fall between listed sizes; extra fabric can be tucked, while a short blanket cannot cover an exposed edge.
Orvis’s guidance is practical rather than tied to a single product: check every listing’s measurements and size up if you are unsure. See its furniture-protector guidance for the same coverage-first approach: Orvis dog throw blankets.
Measure for a bed or crate area
Measure the mattress or crate floor, then add the depth of any sides you want to wrap. A bed throw may need to cover the sleeping surface plus a bolster; a crate blanket may need to fold without blocking ventilation. Do not assume a sofa-sized throw is automatically suitable for a bed—compare the listed width and length with the space and the amount you plan to tuck.
Match the construction to the mess
Think in three levels: ordinary washable protection, moisture resistance, and a waterproof barrier. These terms are not interchangeable, so use the exact claim made for the product you are considering.
Washable fabric for hair, dirt, and drool
For routine shedding and muddy paws, the useful feature is an easy-care throw that can be washed as directed. Orvis describes comfortable, practical choices such as breathable fleece and quilted polyester treated for moisture resistance. Comfort matters because a throw that feels unpleasant may be ignored by the dog and fail as a furniture layer. Its guidance describes the purpose clearly: “A dog throw blanket gives your dog a soft, comfortable spot AND keeps hair, dirt, and drool off the furniture.”
That description does not establish that fleece, polyester, or any other fabric repels hair. The available sources provide seller and manufacturer guidance, not a controlled comparison of hair release. Choose a fabric on the basis of feel, construction, and care instructions rather than an unsupported promise that it is hair-proof.
Moisture-resistant treatment
A moisture-resistant treatment is intended to help a fabric handle some dampness, such as drool or wet paws, without making the entire blanket a leakproof pad. Orvis specifically lists quilted polyester treated for moisture resistance as one practical construction. Confirm the product’s wording and limits; “moisture-resistant” should not be silently upgraded to “waterproof.”
Waterproof liner for leaks
A waterproof blanket is designed to stop liquid from passing through. Chewy explains that a waterproof option can be useful when pets track in wetness or have accidents, while Orvis notes that a waterproof blanket may use a liner between fabric layers to prevent leakage. The liner is the important distinction: it adds a barrier beneath the surface fabric, rather than relying only on a finish applied to the face.

Waterproof protection can be worthwhile on a sofa used by a puppy, an incontinent dog, or a pet returning from rain. It can also feel less breathable or noisier than an unlined throw, depending on its construction. Treat waterproofing as a decision about liquid risk, not as evidence that the surface will release hair more easily.
Use a decision rule
- Mostly hair and dry dirt: prioritize a comfortable, washable throw that fits the furniture.
- Wet paws or occasional drool: consider a product explicitly described as moisture-resistant, and verify its care label.
- Accidents or liquid reaching upholstery would be costly: choose a throw explicitly described as waterproof and check whether it has a liner between layers.
- Several dogs sharing one spot: favor a size that covers the complete area and a care routine you can repeat frequently.
Compare throws on the criteria that affect daily use
When two products look similar online, compare the details below instead of relying on a color name or a broad “pet blanket” label.
| Criterion | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage and fit | Exact width and length; whether the fabric can drape or tuck around the furniture | Prevents exposed cushions and edges where hair and dirt collect |
| Hair and dirt management | Washability and any brushing or pre-wash instructions; do not infer hair release from fabric name alone | Determines how practical regular cleaning will be |
| Liquid protection | Ordinary fabric, moisture-resistant treatment, or a waterproof liner | Matches the blanket to dry shedding, damp paws, or accidents |
| Care burden | Permitted water temperature, cycle, drying method, and special maintenance | A blanket that cannot be laundered as needed will not protect furniture for long |
| Comfort and use | Surface texture, breathability, and whether the dog will settle on it | Comfort encourages the dog to use the protected spot |
Retailer guidance emphasizes comfort alongside protection, so judge the throw as both a furniture cover and a resting surface. If a listing omits a dimension, lining detail, or care method, treat that information as not stated rather than guessing.
What the named specifications do—and do not—tell you
Paw.com lists its PupProtector Waterproof Throw Blanket as having a faux-fur side, a microsuede side, and an internal lining. The manufacturer lists two sizes:

|---|---|---|
| Original | 60 × 50 inches | Faux-fur side, microsuede side, internal lining; described as waterproof |
| Large | 80 × 62 inches | Faux-fur side, microsuede side, internal lining; described as waterproof |
These are product specifications, not performance test results. The dimensions help you compare the blanket with your measured furniture. The listed lining supports the product’s waterproof construction claim, but it does not establish how quickly hair comes off, how the blanket behaves after repeated washing, or whether every sofa will be fully covered. Review the current listing for any changes before ordering: PupProtector Waterproof Throw Blanket.
Check the care label before you buy
Washability varies with fabric, filling, backing, and construction. Maytag advises following the blanket’s fabric care tag before washing any dog blanket to avoid damage. A product can be marketed as washable while still requiring a particular cycle, temperature, or drying method.
Questions to answer on the listing or tag
- Is machine washing permitted, and at what temperature?
- Does the label require a delicate or gentle cycle?
- Is tumble drying allowed, and must it use low or no heat?
- Is air drying required?
- Are there instructions for brushing a pile, faux fur, or other textured surface?
- Does the waterproof layer have any restrictions that differ from the outer fabric?
If the answer to one of these questions is missing, do not assume a standard laundry routine is safe. Save or photograph the care label so the instructions remain available after packaging is discarded.

How to wash a dog throw without making hair and damage worse
Maytag’s laundering guidance applies a sequence: prepare the blanket, remove excess hair when appropriate, pretreat stains, distribute the load, and follow the label for the wash and dry cycle. The exact method depends on the product.
Recommended Free Tools
1. Remove loose hair first
For a blanket that permits it, Maytag lists a lint roller, dryer sheets, or placing the blanket in the dryer before washing as possible ways to loosen pet hair. The pre-dryer step is not universal—use it only if the product’s instructions allow it. After any dryer step, clear the dryer’s lint trap before the next load.
2. Pretreat visible stains
Identify the stain and pretreat it according to the blanket label and the appropriate stain method. Avoid applying a cleaner that could affect a waterproof coating, faux fur, microsuede, or dyed fabric unless the care instructions permit it.
3. Load the washer evenly
Distribute the blanket so the washer is not forced to handle one heavy, waterlogged lump. If the throw fills the drum or becomes excessively heavy when wet, use a larger machine or a laundry service rather than compressing it into an overloaded load.
4. Select the permitted cycle and temperature
Use the cycle and water temperature specified on the care tag. Maytag notes that dog blankets can often be machine-washed depending on their fabric and filling, but the label controls the decision.
5. Dry exactly as directed
Drying is part of the construction, not an afterthought. High heat can damage synthetic fibers, coatings, faux fur, or waterproof layers. Use the stated low- or no-heat setting, air dry when required, and do not return a damp blanket to furniture where it can trap moisture.
6. Restore the surface if instructed
For the PupProtector example, Paw.com instructs cold delicate machine washing and low or no-heat drying, with careful brushing to fluff the faux fur. Follow that product-specific direction rather than applying it to every throw.

Create a defined resting zone
Place the blanket where the dog already chooses to settle, or make that spot appealing with a bed or familiar toy. Cover the complete contact area instead of relying on a narrow strip beneath the dog’s torso. A dog that turns around, stretches, or climbs onto the arm can otherwise move hair and dirt outside the protected section.

Tuck without blocking movement
Tuck excess fabric between cushions only where it cannot become a trip or chewing hazard. On a loose-backed sofa, drape enough over the back to protect it, but keep the dog’s entry and exit path clear. Recheck the position after the first few uses; the best measured fit may still need adjustment for how your dog moves.
Keep a rotation
One throw in use and one clean throw in reserve makes laundering manageable. The number of blankets you need depends on how often the dog uses the furniture and how quickly the item dries; there is no universal quantity. A spare is especially useful when the waterproof or lined layer requires slower drying.
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing by the word “medium”
Size labels are not standardized. Compare the listed inches or centimeters with your measurements, and size up when uncertain as Orvis recommends.
Assuming waterproof means hair-repellent
A liner can stop liquid while the face fabric still collects hair. Waterproofing answers a leak problem; it does not prove a hair-management advantage.
Assuming every polyester or fleece throw behaves the same
Fiber name alone does not reveal pile height, weave, backing, treatment, or laundering limits. Look for the product’s actual construction and care directions.

Ignoring the underside
A blanket may have a soft top and a coated or lined underside. Check whether that layer can contact your upholstery safely, whether it slips, and whether the manufacturer gives cleaning instructions for it.
Skipping the care tag because the blanket is inexpensive
Incorrect heat or agitation can shrink, mat, or damage a throw regardless of price. The care label is the controlling instruction.
Overloading the washer with hair-covered fabric
Remove loose hair when the instructions permit, clear the dryer lint trap after a pre-dryer step, and leave room for the blanket to move through the wash.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →When a throw blanket is enough—and when it is not
A throw is appropriate when you need a removable, washable layer for a defined spot on a chair, sofa, bed, or similar surface. It is less suitable as the only protection when liquid can reach cushions from several directions, when the furniture must remain fully covered, or when your dog chews and pulls loose fabric.
For repeated accidents, combine a correctly sized waterproof layer with a cleaning routine for the upholstery itself. For heavy shedding, plan frequent hair removal and laundering rather than expecting a single blanket to contain every strand. A throw protects the surface it covers; it does not replace veterinary advice for sudden incontinence, skin problems, or unusually heavy shedding.
A practical buying checklist
- Measure the chair, sofa, bed, or crate area and note how much fabric you need to drape or tuck.
- Compare the exact dimensions of each candidate; choose the larger size when the fit is uncertain.
- Decide whether your problem is dry hair and dirt, dampness, or liquid leakage.
- Verify the product’s exact claim: ordinary fabric, moisture-resistant treatment, or waterproof liner.
- Read the complete care instructions, including cycle, temperature, drying, and brushing requirements.
- Plan how you will remove loose hair before washing and clear the dryer lint trap when applicable.
- Check that the texture is comfortable enough for your dog to use consistently.
- Keep a replacement or rotation plan if the throw will be washed often.
- Treat dimensions and construction descriptions as specifications, not proof of superior hair release or durability.
What the available evidence can support
Retailer and manufacturer guidance supports a coverage-first choice, careful attention to construction, and label-directed laundering. It does not provide an independent ranking of blanket fabrics for dog-hair release, a percentage of hair captured, or a durability test across brands. The most defensible choice is therefore the throw that fits your furniture, meets the required level of liquid protection, and has a care routine you can realistically follow.
