For many dogs, a shallow wading pool can make a pleasant place to splash without requiring them to swim. A hard-plastic pool made for dogs is a sensible option to consider, particularly if your dog likes to dig or chew—but no pool is automatically chew-proof or safe without supervision. Choose for your dog’s behavior, the space you have, traction, and how easily you can empty and clean it.
Start with your dog, not the pool
A kiddie pool is best treated as an optional water-play space, not something every dog needs to enjoy. Some dogs prefer paddling or standing in shallow water; others are uneasy around it. Let your dog investigate at their own pace, and never force a reluctant dog into the pool. The AKC’s swimming guidance emphasizes gradual introductions and notes that not all dogs are comfortable in water.
- If your dog digs or chews, consider how likely they are to damage the pool.
- If your dog is cautious, look for an easy entry and a bottom that is not uncomfortably slippery.
- If you cannot stay nearby and supervise, do not set up a pool session.

Choose a size and setup that work in your space
There is no published sizing formula in the cited guidance, so use the dog and your yard as practical guides. The pool should have enough room for your dog to stand, turn, or paddle comfortably, while remaining shallow enough for the activity you intend. Check usable interior depth as well as the outside dimensions; a large footprint does not necessarily mean a deep pool is appropriate for your dog.
Before buying, consider where the pool will sit and how you will handle the water afterward. A level, stable surface helps keep the pool in place. Think through how you will empty it, rinse it, and store it between uses. These are selection checks rather than claims that one drainage design or pool model is superior.

Make the bottom comfortable and secure
A slick surface can make some dogs afraid to enter. The AKC suggests kennel decking or a rubber drainage mat as possible ways to improve traction. If you add an insert, check that it cannot slide, buckle, or leave gaps where paws could catch. Remove it if it shifts or creates an unsafe edge.
Keep pool water separate from drinking water
Set out fresh potable water and discourage your dog from drinking from the pool. The ASPCA warns that drinking pool or outdoor water can pose a hazard; the AKC explains that a small amount of properly maintained chlorinated pool water is usually not harmful, but drinking too much can irritate the digestive system. Keep concentrated pool chemicals, including chlorine tablets, completely out of your dog’s reach. Supervise every session and teach the way out
Stay with your dog while they are in or around the pool. Introduce the water gradually and help your dog learn how to get out rather than assuming they will find the exit. The AKC advises supervising dogs around water and keeping chlorine tablets inaccessible; its pool swimming safety guidance also stresses teaching an exit route. The ASPCA warns that pool covers can be a drowning hazard if an animal slips beneath one, so do not treat a covered pool as a safe place for an unattended dog.
Use the pool as one part of hot-weather care
A wading pool does not replace shade, rest breaks, or other heat precautions. The ASPCA identifies flat-faced animals and elderly, overweight, or heart- or lung-compromised pets as more susceptible to heatstroke. A simple pre-purchase checklist
- Does your dog actually enjoy approaching and playing in water?
- Is the pool’s footprint and usable depth suitable for your dog and yard?
- Could your dog’s digging or chewing damage the pool?
- Is the bottom comfortable to walk on, or will a securely fitted traction surface help?
- Can you place, empty, rinse, and store it safely?
- Can you supervise the whole session, provide fresh drinking water, and keep pool chemicals inaccessible?
