For a car, choose a secured carrier or crate with model-specific crash-test evidence, or a crash-tested dog harness and seat-belt restraint. For a flight, check the exact airline’s current rules before choosing a kennel or booking.
Choose equipment for the trip: car or plane
For car travel
Use a secured crate or carrier, or a crash-tested dog harness attached with a seat-belt restraint. Keep your puppy in the back seat: a loose pet can distract the driver, and a front airbag can injure an animal. The FDA recommends proper restraint and back-seat placement (Travel Training for You and Your Pets); Cornell identifies a crash-tested harness, seat belt, or travel crate as the safest approach (Traveling safely with your dog).

A carrier must be restrained so it cannot slide. If you do not have a crash-tested option, Cornell advises securing the carrier on the floor behind a front seat. Do not assume a standard pet crate is crash-protective simply because it is sturdy or marketed for car travel.

First determine whether your puppy will travel in the cabin or as cargo, and confirm that the airline accepts pets on your exact itinerary. Cabin carriers must fit the airline’s under-seat space; cargo kennels must meet the airline’s construction and handling requirements. The U.S. Department of Transportation notes that airline policies can vary by size, age, behavior, weather, kennel, seating and paperwork (Flying with a Pet, updated September 26, 2025). A product listing that says “airline approved” does not establish that a particular airline will accept it.

Compare the right safety criteria

Verify car crash-test claims
Search for test results tied to the exact product and model, not just a brand or product category. The Center for Pet Safety’s Pet Carrier & Crate Crash Test Research index includes research categories and earlier studies; the index itself is not a blanket certification of every current product. Do not infer that a model passed a test unless its specific result is documented.
Check cargo-kennel construction
For cargo travel, the AVMA’s 2023 brochure describes a strong hard shell without interior protrusions, a secure spring-loaded lock, strong handles or grips, adequate ventilation, a solid leak-proof bottom with absorbent material, and clear live-animal and contact labels. It also advises against wheels. Airlines may add requirements, so use their current instructions as the final checklist (Traveling with Your Pet).

Fit the carrier to a growing puppy
Choose by your puppy’s actual measurements and travel posture, not by a Golden Retriever label or predicted adult size alone. Check that the puppy can settle in the intended position and that the equipment fits its assigned place in the car or, for cabin travel, the airline’s under-seat space. Reassess regularly as your puppy grows; a once-comfortable fit can stop being appropriate.
The AVMA’s stand, sit, turn and lie-down guidance is specifically for air-cargo kennel sizing, not a universal car-crate standard. For car use, prioritize secure installation and model-specific crash evidence as well as a fit your puppy can tolerate.

Introduce the carrier before the trip
- Make it familiar. Set up the crate or carrier at home and let the puppy explore it at its own pace. Keep sessions short and positive, using treats.
- Practice calm settling. Gradually build time inside while staying nearby. If the puppy shows anxious behavior, Cornell advises that training may be moving too quickly; take a step back.
- Build up to car rides. Secure the restraint as you will for a real journey, begin with very short rides, then extend them gradually before attempting a longer drive.
- Plan breaks. On longer drives, stop for water, stretching and elimination. WSAVA’s transport guidance also emphasizes gradual crate exposure and considering whether a liner is suitable if an animal chews or swallows it (Dog and Cat Welfare During Transport, 2025 factsheet).
Ask your veterinarian about travel health
Puppies can experience motion sickness. Cornell advises avoiding food for 4–6 hours before travel to reduce nausea; ask your veterinarian whether that advice is appropriate for your puppy, particularly given its age, health and trip length. Contact the veterinarian if drooling or vomiting occurs. Feeding plans, anti-nausea medication, calming support and trip-specific documentation should be individualized.
Do not give medication or sedatives on your own. The FDA advises veterinary involvement before giving sedatives for travel. The AVMA warns that tranquilizers or sedatives can increase heart or respiratory risks and are generally not allowed by airlines. Ask your veterinarian whether the puppy is fit to travel and what documentation or precautions apply to this trip.

Before you leave
- For a car trip, confirm the crate or harness is secured in the back seat and that the exact product’s crash-test evidence is documented if you are relying on it for crash protection.
- For a flight, reconfirm the airline’s rules for your itinerary, carrier dimensions, age and health paperwork, seating and weather restrictions, and cargo kennel specifications where applicable.
- Check that the puppy has practiced with the equipment and that you have a plan for breaks, water and elimination on longer journeys.
