The right pet bed for a Midwest home is the one that fits your animal’s sleeping posture, gives the support it actually needs, and can be cleaned when muddy paws, spills, or accidents happen. No single model is best for every dog or cat. Use the guide below to choose among nesting beds, flat cushions, and orthopedic-style designs while checking the exact dimensions, washable components, surface fabrics, and moisture protection.
Start with the way your pet sleeps
Observe your dog or cat for several days before buying. A pet that curls tightly may settle into a round or tulip-shaped nest with a raised bolster. An animal that sprawls, changes position often, or shares space with another pet generally needs a broad, flatter sleeping area. The bed must fit the animal’s body after it is fully stretched, not merely match a weight range on a package.

- Curlers and burrowers: Look for a surrounding bolster or nesting wall that gives the head and shoulders a boundary.
- Sprawlers: Prioritize the usable flat cushion, including enough length for the animal to lie on its side without hanging over the edge.
- Older or stiff pets: Choose a stable, supportive surface with an entry that does not require climbing over a tall rim. A marketing term such as “orthopedic” is not proof that a bed treats arthritis or prevents joint disease.
- Pets that switch positions: A rectangular cushion or reversible surface provides more usable orientations than a tightly contoured nest.
Measure the intended floor space as well as the pet. A bed that fits the animal but blocks a doorway, heater, crate door, or walking route will be moved or abandoned. Put it on a dry, draft-free indoor surface; a bed is not a substitute for shelter or temperature control.

Bed shapes: nesting bolster versus flat cushion
Tulip and other nesting designs
The MidWest Tulip Style Dog & Cat Bed is described as a plush nesting bed for canine and feline users. Its raised tulip-style sides create a boundary for animals that like to curl or rest their head against a rim, and the listing describes a non-slip base. This is a product-description feature set, not an independent comfort test.

Check how much of the interior remains flat once the pet is inside. A deep bolster can reduce the usable sleeping area for a large dog, while a small cat may appreciate the enclosed feel. Measure the interior cushion rather than relying only on the outside dimensions.
Rectangular or slab-style cushions
A flatter rectangular bed offers a predictable surface for stretching and is often easier to place beside a sofa, under a desk, or in a crate. It can also be preferable for pets that dislike being surrounded. The trade-off is less head support and less of a “den” effect. If the room has a smooth floor, look for a grippy underside so the bed does not slide when the animal stands up.
Shared dog-and-cat spaces
In a home with more than one species, compare the largest animal’s stretched length with the bed’s usable area. A single oversized flat bed may work when pets voluntarily share, but separate beds are more practical if one animal guards resources or prefers a different firmness and temperature. A cat may also prefer a higher rim or quieter location than a dog.

Surface feel and seasonal flexibility
Midwest homes can have cold floors in winter, warm rooms in summer, and muddy or wet entryways during transitional seasons. A surface that feels comfortable in one season may be too warm in another, so treat fabric choice as a preference rather than proof of climate performance.
The Bedsure Orthopedic Waterproof Dog & Cat Bed listing describes a reversible design: warm Sherpa on one side and cooler Oxford fabric on the other. It also describes a stain-resistant exterior. Those are manufacturer or retailer descriptions, not results from a controlled seasonal test. Turn the bed only after checking that the underside remains stable and that the pet actually prefers the new texture.
Long-haired animals, pets that overheat, and dogs that return from outdoor activity damp may prefer a less fluffy side. Short-coated or elderly pets may settle better on a warmer, softer face. Keep a washable blanket available if you need to adjust warmth without replacing the entire bed.

Support and fill: what “orthopedic” can and cannot tell you
Foam density, shredded latex, fiber fill, and layered cushions feel different and compress differently over time. A label alone does not reveal firmness, durability, or whether the bed suits a particular joint condition. If your veterinarian has prescribed a specific support strategy, use that advice rather than treating a retail description as medical guidance.

MidWest’s 2022 catalog describes EcoSpring beds as having thick orthopedic cushioning, a zippered washable cover, stain-repelling fabric, and an interior intended to increase airflow and resist mold and mildew. The catalog says the interior uses recycled plastic. Because that catalog is from 2022, confirm that a current model still has those specifications before relying on them.
Naturepedic’s Organic Dog Bed page describes shredded organic latex and a removable, washable waterproof cover, with six sizes. Shredded latex is a distinct fill option; the page does not establish that it is clinically superior for every pet. Choose by the animal’s comfort, ability to rise and lie down, and the maker’s stated dimensions.
For a senior, recovering, or mobility-limited animal, avoid a bed that collapses into a deep hollow or has a tall step-over edge. Watch the pet get on and off it. Reluctance, slipping, repeated repositioning, or sleeping beside rather than on the bed is useful evidence that the height, firmness, or texture is wrong; it is not a diagnosis.
Washability and moisture protection are separate features
Before buying, identify which pieces can go into a washing machine, which can be dried, and which must be spot-cleaned. A removable cover is not the same as a washable foam core.
Read the care label literally
The MidWest Tulip listing says the bed is machine washable and dryer friendly. Its care panel specifies gentle cold-water washing and low-heat tumble drying in a machine without an agitator. Follow those instructions for that model; do not assume every plush bed can tolerate the same cycle or heat.

Animals Matter’s Katie Puff Ortho bed illustrates the opposite limitation: its cover unzips for cold-water machine washing and line drying, while the inserts and foam are not washable. Plan for a completely dry replacement cover or a second bed if your pet is prone to accidents.
Look for a barrier around the fill
The Bedsure listing describes a waterproof liner around the center foam. Naturepedic describes a waterproof-backed cover. These constructions can reduce the chance that a spill reaches the fill, but they are claims tied to those products, not a guarantee for all beds. Inspect seams and zipper areas, where liquids can still enter, and remove the cover promptly after an accident.
Choose a cleaning routine you can maintain
- Vacuum or shake out hair and debris before laundering, following the label’s limits.
- Use the stated water temperature and detergent guidance; excessive heat can shrink fabric or damage foam.
- Dry every layer fully before reassembly. Damp foam can develop odors and may encourage microbial growth.
- Keep a spare washable cover, blanket, or second bed when the pet sleeps on the bed every night.
- After a leak, check the liner and insert, not just the outer fabric. Replace filling that remains wet or smells musty.

MidWest says it tests products during design and throughout a product line’s life, and that its QuietTime beds and fabric products undergo textile testing. The company says repeated laundering is assessed for seams, weight, density, dimensional change, pilling, and colorfastness, and that its products carry a one-year manufacturer warranty. These are MidWest’s own statements, not independent verification.
A practical sizing and placement check
- Measure the pet at rest. Measure nose to the base of the tail while the animal is lying in its preferred position, then add room for a full stretch. For a curled sleeper, also measure the diameter of the curl.
- Measure the bed’s interior. Use the flat, usable cushion area. Do not count a thick bolster as sleeping space.
- Check entry height. Have the pet step over the edge while supervised. A high rim can be comfortable for a young cat but awkward for a dog with limited mobility.
- Check the floor. Place the bed away from drafts and direct heat, and confirm that the base does not slide on hardwood, tile, or vinyl.
- Plan for cleaning. Confirm that the cover can be removed without wrestling the insert, and note whether the insert can be washed, dried, or only spot-cleaned.
- Test acceptance gradually. Put the bed near an already favored resting spot and add a familiar blanket. Never force a pet into it.
There is no universal sizing rule established by the products reviewed here. When between sizes, compare the interior dimensions with the animal’s stretched length and the available floor area, then account for the bolster’s footprint.

Statements that a fabric repels stains, dirt, oils, and liquids or that an interior resists mold and mildew belong to the relevant manufacturer catalog or listing. They should not be generalized to other fabrics or interpreted as a guarantee against dampness.
Common buying mistakes and fixes
Choosing by outside dimensions only
A large bolster can make a bed look spacious while leaving little room inside. Fix this by measuring the sleeping surface and comparing it with the pet’s stretched length.
Assuming “orthopedic” means therapeutic
The term describes a marketing position, not a diagnosis or treatment. Ask your veterinarian about mobility concerns and evaluate whether the pet can rise, turn, and lie down comfortably.
Buying a bed whose core cannot be cleaned
Removable fabric is helpful, but an unwashed insert can retain urine, vomit, or moisture. Confirm the insert policy before purchase and keep a backup cover or bed.
Ignoring movement on smooth floors
Sliding can make a pet avoid the bed or struggle when standing. Choose a documented non-slip base or add a compatible rug under it, provided the added layer remains flat and safe.
Expecting one texture to suit every season
Offer a reversible or lightly layered setup when the animal’s preferences change, and observe whether it chooses the warmer or cooler surface. Product descriptions are not controlled thermal tests.

Frequently asked questions
Can a dog-and-cat bed really work for both species?
Yes, if the interior dimensions and entry suit both animals and neither pet guards the space. In a shared home, provide separate beds when pets prefer different textures, heights, or sleeping locations.
Is a waterproof liner enough for house-training accidents?
It can limit how far a spill travels, but seams, zippers, and the exposed cover can still become wet. Remove and dry the cover and inspect the insert immediately; follow the product’s care instructions.
Should I wash the foam with the cover?
Only if the specific label permits it. Some products allow machine washing of the whole bed, while others—including the Katie Puff Ortho example—allow washing the cover but not the inserts or foam.
