A generic storage tote or ordinary bin is not an equivalent substitute. For camping and outdoor food supplies, use a certified food-storage container or locker that meets the site’s rules; it is a different product for a different job.
Which option works best?
The right choice depends on what you are storing and where. A residential garbage cart needs to handle household waste and fit the collection system. A campsite food locker is intended for food and supplies at an outdoor recreation site. Neither should be treated as a universal replacement for the other.
| Option | Best suited to | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Certified bear-resistant trash can | Household garbage stored outdoors, where the hauler accepts the model | Certification for the exact model, collection compatibility, and local rules |
| Residential trash cart enclosure | Protecting ordinary household cans or shared waste systems, where locally accepted | Whether the enclosure is accepted by local authorities and the hauler, and how it must be secured |
| Secure building or shed | Keeping household garbage out of sight and smell until collection | That the location is secure and allowed by local guidance; a shed is not automatically certified |
| Certified food-storage container or locker | Food and supplies at campsites or other outdoor recreation sites | Exact-model certification and the specific land manager’s requirements |
| Generic tote or ordinary bin | General storage only; not a bear-resistant substitute by itself | Do not rely on it outdoors unless it is secured inside a building or an accepted enclosure |
New Jersey Fish and Wildlife recommends certified bear-resistant garbage containers in areas frequented by black bears, stating that “Certified containers offer the best protection.” Its guidance also advises storing garbage securely where bears are unlikely to see or smell it if a certified can is not used, such as in a basement until collection (New Jersey Fish and Wildlife garbage guidance).
How to choose a household trash can or enclosure
- Check local rules first. Requirements vary by community, and some places specify how garbage must be stored. Ask your local wildlife agency or municipality what is accepted.
- Confirm the exact model’s certification. Look up the model, not just the brand or product category, on the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee (IGBC) bear-resistant products page. Its product list was marked current as of February 16, 2026; check the live list before buying because listings and product status can change.
- Ask the hauler before paying. Confirm that your waste provider will collect the specific can or service a cart inside the proposed enclosure. A bear-resistant design is of little use for curbside waste if the collection system will not accept it. Bear Smart and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission also advise checking with the waste provider (Bear Smart garbage guidance; Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission guidance on living with bears).
- Match the design to access and capacity needs. Consider how much waste you generate, how often you need to open it, and whether everyone who uses it can secure it properly. No universal capacity or best brand is established for every household.
- Plan how it will be secured. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and local requirements for securing a can or enclosure. Certification applies to a particular model and does not remove the need for careful use.
What certification does—and does not—mean
IGBC says its list identifies commercially available products that met minimum standards for the effort a grizzly bear must expend to access the contents. Certification is specific to the model; it is not a guarantee that a bear can never breach a container. Users still need to store attractants carefully. IGBC also cautions that certification alone does not mean a product is approved on every public land, so check the rules of the local land-management agency (IGBC bear-resistant products program).
#1 Best Overall
- ✔️ IGBC Certified Protection: Tested against real grizzlies and meets official bear-resistant standards required in parks and regulated areas
- ✔️ Stop Bear Break-Ins: Prevents wildlife access and dangerous encounters by eliminating food reward behavior in high-risk outdoor environments
- ✔️ High-Capacity Performance: 197-gallon volume reduces overflow and service frequency, holding up to 18–22 garbage bags or 4–5 standard bins
- ✔️ Multi-Layer Defense System: Locking lid, anti-scent seal, and pry-resistant design work together to block forced entry and wildlife attraction
- ✔️ Built for Extreme Force: 12–14 gauge structural steel resists impact, prying, and repeated pressure from large predators
That distinction matters when comparing a certified can with an ordinary storage container: a sturdy appearance or tight lid does not establish that a generic tote meets bear-resistant criteria. For household garbage, use an accepted certified can or enclosure, or follow local agency guidance for secure indoor storage.
What to use for camping food and supplies
At a campground or other outdoor recreation site, follow the specific site’s food-storage rules. A certified food-storage container or locker is intended for food and supplies, but the site may impose its own requirements for approved models, placement, or use. Do not assume a residential trash cart is an acceptable food locker—or that a food locker will work with curbside garbage collection.

Bear-resistant storage can reduce access to human food, but it is not a substitute for using equipment correctly. A 2021 Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies review reported a 96% decrease in incidents of bears obtaining human-related food in Denali when hikers were provided bear-resistant containers. That historical figure, attributed in the review to Schirokauer and Boyd (1998), concerns hikers and food storage; it is not a comparison of residential trash cans with ordinary bins (Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies 2021 review).

Follow your local agency’s instructions. New Jersey Fish and Wildlife advises using a tight-fitting lid and keeping garbage in a secure place where bears are unlikely to see or smell it, such as a basement, until collection. A secured shed or enclosure may provide another way to hold household cans between pickups; Bear Smart describes enclosures as an approach for protecting ordinary cans or shared waste systems. Confirm that the proposed setup is locally accepted and compatible with collection (Bear Smart garbage guidance; New Jersey Fish and Wildlife garbage guidance).
