That label matters more than a “best” claim on the front of the bag or can. Wet, dry, or a mix can work if the food is nutritionally appropriate for kittens; treats and supplemental foods should not replace a complete diet.
How to choose the right kitten food
Start with the nutritional adequacy statement on the package. It should identify the food as complete and balanced for growth, or for all life stages. VCA Animal Hospitals advises that the AAFCO statement should indicate suitability for growing kittens or all life stages, and Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine identifies life-stage adequacy as an important label check. If a package has no AAFCO statement, VCA says not to use that food as the kitten’s main diet.

Kittens have different nutritional needs from adult cats. VCA notes that kitten foods generally provide more calories in a smaller quantity and higher levels of several nutrients that support growth. A food labeled only for adult maintenance is not the right default for a growing kitten.
Check the food maker’s information
When a label is unclear, use the questions in the WSAVA Global Nutrition Committee’s pet-food selection guide to assess what the manufacturer says about nutritional adequacy, life stage, and its nutrition expertise. Ingredient-list order and marketing language alone do not establish that a food is suitable or superior.

Match the food to the kitten
Once the adequacy statement checks out, consider the kitten’s preference, the manufacturer’s feeding directions and calorie information for the kitten’s age and weight, and any needs identified by a veterinarian. A kitten with a health condition may need individualized advice; general food-selection guidance does not establish which medical diet is appropriate.
Is wet or dry food better for kittens?
Neither format is automatically better. Wet and dry foods can both serve as a kitten’s main diet when they are complete and balanced for growth or all life stages. A combination is also an option if the foods together fit the kitten’s needs and feeding directions.

Check the package rather than assuming every canned food is a complete diet: some canned products are treats or intended only for intermittent or supplemental feeding. Those products should not make up the main diet. VCA discusses this distinction in its guide to kitten dry food versus wet food.
How often should I feed a kitten?
Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine gives this general age-based schedule:

Use the food maker’s feeding directions for portions, taking the kitten’s age and weight into account. Cornell’s guidance is a general schedule, not a substitute for a veterinarian’s advice about an individual kitten.
How to change your kitten’s food
Introduce a new food gradually rather than switching all at once. VCA recommends a seven-day transition, increasing the proportion of the new food in stages while decreasing the old food. Follow the instructions in VCA’s kitten-food guide; if the kitten has a medical issue or struggles with the change, ask a veterinarian for direction.

When should I switch my kitten to adult food?
Around one year is a common time to consider adult food, but the right timing depends on the cat’s maturity and veterinary advice. Some large-breed cats may need kitten food longer. VCA explains the timing considerations in its guide to switching a kitten to adult food.
