It contains cocoa, and chocolate can be dangerous to cats. If your cat has eaten any, contact a veterinarian promptly rather than waiting for symptoms; keep the package handy so you can share the ingredients and estimate how much was eaten.
Why Nutella is not safe for cats
Nutella is a human confection, not a cat treat. The US classic spread lists sugar, palm oil, hazelnuts, skim milk, cocoa, lecithin, and vanillin as ingredients. The concern is the cocoa: chocolate contains methylxanthines, including theobromine, to which cats are sensitive. Cornell’s Feline Health Center warns that chocolate can cause abnormal heart rhythms, tremors, depression, and seizures in cats, while the ASPCA says chocolate ingestion can be dangerous for them.

Nutella’s product page lists 200 calories and 21 g of total sugars per 37 g serving. Those are label figures for a human serving, not a measure of safety or a toxicity threshold for cats. Product forms and ingredient labels can vary, so check the package your cat accessed.
What signs can chocolate poisoning cause?
Possible effects of methylxanthine toxicity in pets include vomiting, diarrhea, panting, excessive thirst and urination, hyperactivity, abnormal heart rhythm, tremors, seizures, and death. Cornell also identifies depression as a possible effect. Higher-cacao chocolate generally poses greater risk, but Nutella is still a cocoa-containing product and should not be treated as safe.

The reviewed sources do not establish a feline dose threshold for Nutella. Do not use dog chocolate thresholds or Nutella’s human nutrition figures to calculate a supposedly safe amount for your cat.
What to do if your cat ate Nutella
- Call your veterinarian or an emergency veterinary clinic promptly. Do not wait for symptoms to appear; a veterinary professional can assess the exposure and advise what to do next.
- Keep the jar or package. Tell the veterinarian the product and ingredient label, your best estimate of how much was eaten and when, your cat’s size, and any signs you have noticed. Cornell and the ASPCA recommend sharing packaging or label information.
- Do not induce vomiting unless a veterinary professional specifically directs you to do so.
- In the United States, you can also call ASPCA Animal Poison Control at (888) 426-4435. Its service page says it is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year; a consultation fee may apply.
What treats are safer choices?
Choose a treat intended for cats rather than Nutella. Ask your veterinarian what is appropriate for your individual cat, particularly if your cat has a medical condition or dietary restrictions. The reviewed sources do not validate a particular human food or commercial treat as a Nutella substitute, so avoid assuming that a food is safe just because it is not chocolate.
