Capacity is the first screening question. Petco’s Adult Hoodie with Pet Carrying Pouch listing specifies one pet weighing up to 12 pounds. That figure applies to that listing only; it is not a category-wide standard and should not be used for another hoodie. A seller may use a different limit, a different measurement method, or no clearly stated limit at all.

Weigh the animal, then leave a safety margin instead of shopping right at the published maximum. Weight alone is not enough: a long-bodied cat, a deep-chested dog, or an animal that cannot sit comfortably may exceed the pouch’s practical capacity even when the scale number appears acceptable. 2. Wearer sizing is a separate measurement

Consider the animal’s coat, the room temperature, and how quickly you can remove the garment if the pet becomes warm or restless. A thick fabric is not automatically safer or better. This is Petco’s product warning, not a universal legal or safety standard for every pouch hoodie. The same warning set says not to exceed the stated weight limit, to remove the pet if it appears uncomfortable or distressed, and to inspect the product regularly and discard it if it is damaged or torn.
How to measure and choose the right size
- Weigh the pet. Use a reliable household or veterinary scale and record the current weight. If the animal is growing, account for likely growth rather than buying to today’s number alone.
- Measure the wearer’s reference hoodie. Lay a hoodie that fits well flat. Measure chest width, shoulder width, sleeve length, and body length using the same points shown on the seller’s chart.
- Compare like with like. Match garment measurements to garment measurements. A chest measurement from your body cannot be compared directly with a flat garment width unless the seller explains the conversion.
- Check the pouch position. The opening should sit where the animal can be monitored without covering your face, restricting your arms, or pulling the garment sharply downward.

After washing, reshape the pouch while the fabric is damp and inspect the seams once it is dry. Store the hoodie clean and fully dry, with the pouch uncompressed so that creases do not hide a developing tear. Keep it away from pets when it is not being used; chewing can damage fabric and cords.

The animal tries to climb out
Return to seated, empty-garment acclimation and use shorter sessions. Check whether the opening is too loose, the pouch too shallow, or the pet uncomfortable. Persistent escape attempts are a reason to discontinue the hoodie, not to add an unapproved strap or cord around the animal.
The garment is too tight across the wearer’s chest
