How to Choose the Right Bulldog for Your Family and Lifestyle

English, French, and American Bulldogs have very different exercise, size, and care needs. Use this guide to match the breed and individual dog to your family, climate, activity level, and veterinary capacity.

“Bulldog” is not one lifestyle. An English Bulldog or French Bulldog is usually a companion for short walks and play, while an American Bulldog is a large, athletic working-type dog that needs regular vigorous activity, training, and mental stimulation. The right choice depends on the individual dog, your family’s routine, your climate, and your ability to provide lifelong veterinary and daily care—not on a breed’s appearance alone.

Before choosing any flat-faced dog, plan for reduced heat and strenuous-exercise tolerance. Meet the dog, assess its breathing and behavior, review health records, and discuss breed-specific risks and likely veterinary costs with a veterinarian.

Start by defining which bulldog you mean

Breed names hide major differences in size, exercise needs, and management. Use the comparison below as a first filter, not a guarantee of how one particular dog will behave.

Breed Typical size Activity and household fit Key care and selection points
English Bulldog About 40–50 lb and around 15 inches, according to the American Kennel Club (AKC) Devoted, friendly companion that can suit city or country homes. Moderate exercise and short walks are generally appropriate. Brush several times a week; inspect and dry skin folds; expect drooling. Avoid heat and supervise around water.
French Bulldog Under 28 lb and about 11–13 inches, according to the AKC Adaptable, social companion for singles, couples, or families. Short walks or play are usually enough. Keep facial folds clean and dry, control weight, brush regularly, and avoid hot or humid exertion. Ask for documented health testing.
American Bulldog Males 75–100 lb; females 60–80 lb, according to the AKC Athletic and demanding. Needs frequent exercise, constant engagement, early socialization, and consistent training. Ask about hip and elbow evaluations. Plan safe, age-appropriate activity and training before bringing one home.

Breed descriptions are tendencies, not promises. A calm adult American Bulldog may be easier to live with than an exceptionally intense individual, and a small French Bulldog can still have substantial medical needs. Mixed-breed dogs described as “bulldogs” may not fit any one profile, so evaluate the actual dog.

Wags & Wiggles Dual-Sided Dog Grooming Glove, One Size, 1 Count
  • 2-IN-1 DUAL SIDE GROOMING GLOVE — RUBBER BRUSH AND VELOUR FUR REMOVER: One glove, two grooming tools. The rubber bristle side brushes, massages, and loosens fur during grooming or bathing. Flip to the velour side to remove fur from clothing.
  • RUBBER BRISTLE SIDE FOR WET OR DRY BRUSHING AND MASSAGING: The paw-shaped silicone and rubber bristle side can be used dry for regular brushing and massaging, or wet during bath time for a deeper lather, scrubbing, and coat cleanse.
  • VELOUR SIDE FOR LIFTING FUR FROM CLOTHING AND FURNITURE: The velour side of this grooming glove works as a lint-style fur remover — use it to sweep loose pet hair from clothing, upholstery, furniture, and other fabrics between grooming sessions.
  • FLEXIBLE RUBBER PAW SHAPE — COMFORTABLE FIT FOR GROOMING: The flexible, paw-shaped rubber brush conforms to your pet's body for an effective, comfortable groom. Note: this glove is one size and may run slightly large for smaller hands.
  • WORKS ON DOGS AND CATS — SHORT OR LONG COATS: The rubber grooming side works effectively on dogs and cats with a range of coat lengths. Short-haired breeds especially benefit from the rubber bristle action for undercoat removal and shine.

Match the dog to your household

English Bulldog: a moderate-activity companion

An English Bulldog can work in an apartment, townhouse, or house when the family can provide short, regular walks, safe play, companionship, and careful temperature management. This is not a jogging or hiking partner. Exercise should stop before heavy panting, distress, or exhaustion, particularly in warm weather.

Daily life includes wrinkle care and shedding management. Brush several times a week, then check facial and body folds for moisture, debris, redness, or odor. Folds must be kept clean and dry rather than merely wiped and left damp. Drooling and a tendency to overheat should be part of your practical decision, not an afterthought.

French Bulldog: social, compact, and management-intensive

French Bulldogs are often a good social fit for people who want a small companion that participates in household life. Short walks and indoor play can meet many individuals’ exercise needs, but a compact body does not mean low maintenance. A short face can limit breathing efficiency and tolerance for heat, humidity, strenuous exercise, and stress.

Weight control is especially important: follow measured meals, monitor body condition, and ask your veterinarian how much food and activity are appropriate. Clean and dry facial folds, brush routinely, and schedule veterinary assessment for noisy breathing, easy overheating, or reduced ability to exercise. Never leave a French Bulldog unsupervised around water.

American Bulldog: the active-family option

For a genuinely active household, the American Bulldog is the bulldog most likely to match regular outdoor activity. “Active” must include more than occasional weekend walks: this breed needs frequent physical exercise, problem-solving, training, and structured interaction. A bored, under-exercised dog can become difficult to manage regardless of how much space a home has.

Start socialization and training early. Teach loose-leash walking, reliable recalls, calm greetings, handling, and household boundaries with consistent, reward-based methods. Because adult males can weigh 75–100 pounds and females 60–80 pounds, poor manners become a safety issue quickly. A yard is useful but does not replace walks, training, and supervised engagement.

Use your routine, climate, and home—not just your preference

Write down a normal week before choosing. Include work hours, school runs, commuting, travel, exercise, child-care duties, and who will handle walks and veterinary visits. Then compare that reality with the dog’s needs.

Your situation What to consider Likely direction
Quiet household with short daily walks Can you provide companionship, fold care, weight monitoring, and heat-safe outings? English or French Bulldog may fit better than an American Bulldog, subject to individual health and temperament.
Highly active adults or older children Can you commit to frequent exercise, training, and mental stimulation every day? An American Bulldog may fit if you can manage its size and strength.
Hot, humid climate or limited air conditioning Flat-faced dogs may have less margin for heat and strenuous activity. Plan climate-controlled rest and cool-time walks. Reconsider whether a brachycephalic breed is appropriate; obtain veterinary advice before deciding.
Long periods away from home Who provides toilet breaks, companionship, medication, and exercise? A large yard alone is not a solution. Delay adoption or arrange dependable daily care before choosing any bulldog.
Frequent swimming, boating, or open-water recreation Do not assume a bulldog is a safe swimmer. Water access requires direct supervision and secure prevention of accidental entry. Choose only if you can manage water risks; never leave the dog unattended near pools, ponds, or boats.

Take flat-faced health and heat limits seriously

English and French Bulldogs are brachycephalic, meaning their faces and airways are shortened. That anatomy can reduce breathing efficiency and make heat, strenuous exercise, excitement, and stress harder to tolerate. Individual risk varies, but a dog that breathes noisily at rest, tires quickly, or overheats easily needs veterinary assessment.

The Royal Veterinary College, summarizing a 2020 Nature paper, reports that brachycephalic breeds are at least twice as likely to suffer heat-related illness, with English Bulldogs showing a reported 14-fold increase in risk. Those are population-level figures from a UK veterinary research context; they do not predict an individual dog’s outcome or apply identically to every climate.

Use conservative heat management from the first day:

  • Walk during the coolest part of the day and shorten outings when temperature or humidity rises.
  • Provide shade, ventilation, water, and an indoor cooling option; do not rely on a car, porch, or shaded parking space.
  • Stop activity at early signs of distress rather than waiting for collapse.
  • Ask a veterinarian what breathing effort, sleeping noise, exercise tolerance, and body condition are acceptable for your dog.
  • Treat sudden severe breathing difficulty, collapse, weakness, confusion, or inability to cool as an emergency.

“That is normal for the breed” is not a safe explanation for respiratory distress. The French Bulldog Club of America also identifies spinal concerns and advises veterinary attention for noisy breathing or easy overheating. The University of California, Davis, notes that flat-faced dogs may require specialized veterinary care; discuss likely needs and costs with a veterinarian before purchase or adoption.

Decide whether the dog is safe for children

Breed tendencies do not make a dog automatically child-safe. Safety depends on the dog’s individual temperament, the child’s age and behavior, the adults’ supervision, and the quality of training and socialization.

  • All interactions between children and dogs require active adult supervision. Stay close enough to intervene; do not treat a child’s maturity as a substitute for supervision.
  • Teach children not to climb on, hug tightly, corner, disturb, or take food and toys from a dog.
  • Give the dog a protected resting area where children never follow.
  • Watch for freezing, turning away, lip licking, growling, guarding, frantic avoidance, or escalating arousal. Separate calmly and seek qualified behavior help rather than punishing warnings.
  • Consider the dog’s physical size. A powerful American Bulldog can injure a child accidentally during play even without aggression.

Ask a breeder or rescue how the individual dog has behaved around children, visitors, handling, food, other animals, and household noise. Verify the story by observing the dog yourself in a calm setting.

Evaluate the individual dog before committing

Meet the dog more than once when possible. Observe breathing after quiet rest, gentle movement, and a short, self-paced interaction. Look for relaxed body language, recovery after mild excitement, willingness to disengage, and comfort with ordinary handling.

Do not select solely for the flattest face, largest head, rare color, or most dramatic appearance. Ask to see how the dog’s parents move and breathe, and whether they tolerate normal activity without distress. A reputable breeder should answer directly and provide records; a rescue should disclose known medical and behavioral history and identify what remains unknown.

Ask for health evidence, not assurances

For a French Bulldog, the French Bull Dog Club of America recommends asking breeders for test results or checking records through the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA). The AKC advises looking for breeders who follow parent-club health recommendations. These sources do not establish one universal screening list for every bulldog breed, so ask which tests apply to the parents and how results were interpreted.

Questions for a breeder

  • Which health tests were completed on each parent, and may I see the written results?
  • How do the parents breathe during rest, warm weather, and ordinary exercise?
  • Have either parent or close relatives needed airway, spinal, orthopedic, skin, or other major treatment?
  • What veterinary examinations, vaccinations, parasite prevention, and records will accompany the puppy?
  • What activity, feeding, wrinkle-care, and weight-management routine do you recommend?
  • What is your policy if a serious inherited problem appears after the dog goes home?

Questions for a rescue or rehoming organization

  • What is known about the dog’s previous homes, behavior around children, and response to other animals?
  • Has a veterinarian evaluated breathing, joints, skin folds, eyes, spine, and body condition?
  • What medications, procedures, restrictions, and follow-up appointments are currently needed?
  • How does the dog behave when left alone, handled, crated, walked, or exposed to visitors?
  • Can I arrange a foster-to-adopt period or a second meeting with everyone who will live with the dog?

Take the records and your observations to your own veterinarian before finalizing the decision. A pre-adoption examination cannot predict every future illness, but it can identify current problems and clarify the care plan.

Plan daily care by breed

Care area English Bulldog French Bulldog American Bulldog
Exercise Moderate, short walks and controlled play; avoid heat. Short walks or play; avoid hot or humid exertion and watch breathing. Frequent substantial activity plus training and mental stimulation.
Grooming Brush several times weekly; inspect, clean, and dry folds. Regular brushing; clean and dry facial folds; monitor skin changes. Routine coat care, nail trimming, ear checks, and handling practice; ask your veterinarian about individual skin needs.
Weight Keep a lean body condition to reduce strain and heat burden. Measure food and monitor weight closely because excess weight can worsen health risks. Feed for steady growth and adult condition; have your veterinarian set portions for the dog’s size and activity.
Equipment Use secure walking equipment that does not interfere with breathing. A properly fitted harness may be preferable to pressure on the neck; ask your veterinarian about fit. Use equipment you can control safely for a powerful, large dog and practise handling before challenging environments.

A rubber grooming mitt is an optional tool for weekly French Bulldog brushing, but it does not treat skin disease, replace fold hygiene, or substitute for veterinary care.

Recognize reasons to pause or walk away

  • The seller refuses to show health records, will not let you meet the mother, or pressures you to pay immediately.
  • The dog is struggling to breathe at rest, repeatedly collapses, cannot recover from mild activity, or overheats in a normal environment.
  • You cannot identify who will provide daily exercise, supervision, wrinkle care, medication, or emergency transport.
  • Your home is routinely hot and you cannot provide reliable cooling and heat-safe scheduling.
  • The family expects a running, hiking, or sports partner but is considering an English or French Bulldog because it looks athletic.
  • You want an American Bulldog but cannot commit to daily training, substantial activity, and management of an adult dog weighing up to 100 pounds.

A practical decision process

  1. Name the breed. Decide whether you are considering an English, French, American, or mixed-breed bulldog; do not compare them as though they were interchangeable.
  2. Audit your week. Record realistic exercise time, absences, climate exposure, child supervision, travel, and access to veterinary care.
  3. Set non-negotiables. Include breathing and heat tolerance, adult size, child-safety requirements, training capacity, and daily-care responsibilities.
  4. Meet several dogs. Observe adults and puppies at rest and in ordinary activity. Evaluate recovery, sociability, handling tolerance, and movement.
  5. Verify health information. Request written parent testing or veterinary records, and independently discuss them with a veterinarian.
  6. Budget for care without relying on a single estimate. Ask a veterinarian about examinations, preventive care, possible specialist referrals, emergency planning, and breed-related costs in your area.
  7. Choose the individual, not the image. If the dog’s needs exceed your reliable capacity, select a different breed or wait.

When each bulldog is most likely to fit

  • Choose an English Bulldog only if you want a companion for moderate, controlled activity and can manage wrinkles, drooling, heat precautions, and potential veterinary needs.
  • Choose a French Bulldog if a small, social companion suits your household and you can provide strict weight, fold, breathing, and heat management.
  • Choose an American Bulldog if your family genuinely enjoys frequent activity and training, has the strength and structure to manage a large dog, and can provide early socialization and lifelong stimulation.
  • Choose none of these if your climate, schedule, finances, or expectations conflict with brachycephalic care or the American Bulldog’s exercise demands.

The Brachycephalic Working Group’s advice is concise: “Stop and think before buying a flat-faced dog.” Apply that pause to the whole decision. A successful match is the dog whose health, temperament, size, and daily needs your household can meet consistently for its entire life.
