For most everyday walks and early leash training, a fixed leash about 4–6 feet long is a useful starting point. Choose its width and weight to suit both your dog’s size and strength and your own grip. The best setup also depends on where you walk and how reliably you can keep your dog close: 4 feet favors control, while 6 feet gives more room to sniff.
Choose a length for the walk you take
There is no single recommended length across all authorities. The American Kennel Club, Edmonton Humane Society and LA County Animal Care & Control describe 4–6 feet as a typical range for everyday walks or training. VCA Animal Hospitals recommends 6–10 feet. These are practical recommendations, not a universal rule: choose the length that lets you manage your dog safely in your usual surroundings.

Edmonton Humane Society’s 2023 guide describes a typical long line as at least 10 feet. VCA discusses long lines of 15–50 feet (4.5–15 m) for exploration in safe, fenced areas. Those longer lengths are for suitable open settings, not a substitute for a manageable walking leash in traffic or crowds.
Match width and weight to dog and handler
A small dog generally needs a lighter, narrower leash; a larger or stronger dog usually needs sturdier, wider equipment. But the leash must also feel comfortable in your hand. A leash that is too heavy can burden a small dog, while a thin line can be uncomfortable or difficult to hold if a dog pulls. VCA advises balancing a width that reduces friction if a dog pulls with a weight the dog can wear comfortably.

There is no industry-wide width chart that maps leash width to a dog’s weight. PetSafe’s chart is one manufacturer’s guide for its own products:

PetSafe describes its 4-foot options as offering more control and being less likely to tangle, and its 6-foot options as providing more room to explore. Its weight bands and widths apply to that product chart, not all dogs or leash brands. Use a brand’s chart as a starting point, then consider your dog’s strength, comfort and behaviour, along with your own ability to grip and shorten the leash.

Adjust for pulling, training and the walking environment
If your dog is still learning or pulls strongly
Choose a sturdy fixed leash that you can hold securely and shorten without wrapping it around your hand. SPCA of Texas recommends a sturdy 4–6-foot leash for reactive dogs and strong pullers. A strong leash does not itself teach loose-leash walking: training, appropriate attachment equipment and the handler’s control still matter. If pulling is difficult to manage, consider whether a properly fitted harness is appropriate; leash choice alone does not settle the collar-versus-harness question.
If the route is crowded or near traffic
A shorter fixed leash makes it easier to keep your dog close when space is limited. The American Kennel Club and LA County Animal Care & Control caution that retractable leashes can make control difficult; their thin lines may tangle, and the line can cause friction burns. SPCA of Texas also warns that a line can snap or fray and that a sudden stop can jerk the handle. These risks make retractable leashes a poor default for an untrained dog or a crowded setting.

If you want to practise recall
Use a long line only where there is enough safe, open space to manage it. Keep it grippable and attend to where the line runs so it does not snag or wrap around people or dogs. A long line supports controlled exploration; it does not mean the dog is off leash.
Check the whole leash connection
Nominal length and width are only part of a safe setup. Before walking, check the material, stitching, clip and the collar or harness attachment. The clip should close securely, and the leash should not be frayed or worn. Replace damaged equipment; Edmonton Humane Society and the American Kennel Club both advise inspecting or replacing worn gear. Make sure you can hold the handle comfortably and take in slack without losing your grip.

A practical choice for most owners
Start with a fixed 4–6-foot leash in a material you can grip comfortably. Favor the shorter end when close control matters; choose the longer end when your dog can walk without tangling the line and you want more room to sniff. Select a lighter, narrower option for a small dog and sturdier, wider gear for a large dog or strong puller, while checking the fit, hardware and your own comfort. Reserve a long line for safe open areas and recall work.
