Choose a litter box your kitten can enter easily and use comfortably, with enough room to turn, dig, and cover waste. A useful guideline is a rectangular box about 1.5 times the cat’s body length; because veterinary guidelines define that measurement differently, use the same endpoints when measuring and comparing.
How big should a kitten’s litter box be?
Start with the 1.5-times rule: aim for a box about one and a half times your kitten’s length. The AAFP/ISFM house-soiling guideline measures from the nose to the base of the tail, while the 2021 AAHA/AAFP life-stage guideline describes the measurement from nose to tail tip. These are slightly different conventions, so choose one and apply it consistently rather than treating the figures as interchangeable.
This is a relative sizing guide, not a universal kitten-specific measurement in inches. Your kitten should also be able to turn around, dig, and cover waste without being cramped. Compare usable space inside the box, not just the outside dimensions.
Make sure your kitten can get in and out
For a young or very small kitten, an easy entry matters as much as interior length. Avoid sides that are too high for the kitten to step over. The 2021 AAHA/AAFP Feline Life Stage Guidelines state: “The litter box edges should not be too high in order for a kitten or senior cat to enter and exit easily.”

Check the entry from your kitten’s perspective: it should be able to climb in and out without struggling. If a box is spacious but difficult to access, it is not a good fit.
Compare boxes by usable space and access
- Interior length: Is there enough room for your kitten to turn and dig?
- Entry height: Can your kitten step over the sides easily?
- Interior layout: Do a lid or hood reduce the space or make access awkward? The cited sizing guidance does not establish that covered boxes are preferable, so choose a setup your kitten can use comfortably.
The AAFP/ISFM guideline cites a study in which adult cats preferred a 34 × 15-inch (86 × 39-cm) box over a smaller one. That figure is evidence about adult-cat preference in one study, not a minimum size for kittens.

What if standard boxes are too small?
If commercial boxes do not provide enough usable room, the AAFP/ISFM guideline names sweater boxes and under-bed storage containers as alternatives. Choose a container with an interior large enough for the kitten to turn and dig, and an entry low enough to use safely. The container’s suitability depends on those usable dimensions and easy access.
Recheck the fit as your kitten grows
A box that works for a small kitten may become cramped. Reassess the interior space and entry as your kitten grows, and move to a larger, accessible box when turning or digging becomes difficult. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine’s new-cat guidance notes that kittens may need a larger box as they grow.

When to ask a veterinarian
If your kitten cannot get into the box, seems uncomfortable using it, or has persistent house-soiling, contact a veterinarian. The 2021 AAHA/AAFP guideline notes that house-soiling in kittens may warrant evaluation for underlying medical conditions.
