To stop a dog from licking or chewing an irritated paw safely, check for a local injury or irritant, gently rinse away loose surface debris, and prevent further licking temporarily if needed. Persistent or intense licking needs veterinary attention because allergies, infection, pain, injury, parasites, and other problems can look alike—and a barrier such as a recovery collar does not treat the cause.

What to do when your dog starts licking a paw

  1. Check all four paws. Look at the nails, pads, and spaces between the toes for a cut, broken nail, swelling, redness, discharge, or something caught in the fur or skin. Note whether your dog favors one paw and whether touching it seems painful.
  2. Rinse only what you can safely reach. If a small loose particle or surface irritant may be responsible, gently rinse the paw with clean water and dry it. Do not dig into the paw to remove an embedded object. Stop if your dog shows significant pain or the paw looks damaged. VCA’s foot-pad first-aid guidance supports cautious handling of an injured foot.
  3. Reduce likely contact with irritants. If residue from a walk is plausible, rinse and dry the paws afterward and avoid the suspected surface where practical. Protective booties may help with a known outdoor exposure or keep a healing paw clean when appropriate, but they are not a substitute for finding out why the paw is irritated.
  4. Use a barrier only as temporary protection. A properly fitted recovery collar, also called an Elizabethan collar, can prevent access to the paw while you arrange veterinary care or follow a veterinarian’s instructions. Check that your dog can eat, drink, and move safely. A collar limits licking; it does not heal an injury or treat an infection.

When to contact a veterinarian

Arrange veterinary assessment if licking is persistent, intense, sudden, recurrent, or getting worse. Contact a veterinarian promptly if you see redness, swelling, bleeding, discharge, limping, or pain. A sudden focus on one paw can be a clue to a local problem such as an injury or foreign material, but an examination is needed to establish the cause. The AKC’s guidance on paw licking likewise recommends veterinary care when the behavior is excessive or the paw appears abnormal.

Do not give human painkillers, use leftover prescriptions, or apply a medicated cream that was not prescribed for this problem. The wrong treatment may be unsafe or delay care for the underlying condition.

Why dogs lick or chew their paws

Occasional grooming can be normal. Repeated licking or chewing is a sign—not a diagnosis—and can itself damage the skin, worsening inflammation and sometimes contributing to a secondary bacterial or yeast infection. As board-certified veterinary dermatologist Dr. Millie Rosales explains in the AKC’s overview of pododermatitis, “there are many causes of pododermatitis.”

It soothes dry, chapped, or crusty noses and softens rough or cracked paw pads—keeping your dog comfortable, healthy, and ready for anything from backyard strolls to wild outdoor adventures
  • Allergies or contact irritation: Environmental or food allergies can make feet itchy; substances touching the paws can also irritate them.
  • Injury or foreign material: Cuts, damaged nails or pads, splinters, and grass awns can cause localized discomfort.
  • Infection or parasites: Bacterial or yeast infection and parasites are among the possible causes.
  • Pain or other disorders: Some immune-mediated, hormonal, metabolic, or tumor conditions can affect the paws.

One paw may point toward a local injury or irritant; several affected paws may fit an allergic or broader skin problem. These patterns are clues only. VCA’s pododermatitis guide describes the range of possible causes and why diagnosis matters.

How a veterinarian finds the cause

The evaluation depends on the dog’s signs and history. A veterinarian may examine the paws and take skin samples, scrapings, cytology, or an aspirate. Depending on what the examination suggests, the workup may also involve blood or endocrine tests, imaging for foreign material, allergy evaluation, or a food-elimination trial. Paw licking alone is not enough to diagnose an allergy.

Why treatment depends on the diagnosis

Care must address the cause, not just interrupt the licking. A veterinarian may need to treat a secondary bacterial or yeast infection while also addressing allergy, parasites, an injury, contact exposure, or another underlying condition. Some causes require ongoing management. As Dr. Rosales notes in the AKC’s pododermatitis guidance, “The prognosis really depends on the underlying cause.” Follow the veterinarian’s instructions and seek follow-up if the paw is not improving or the signs return.
