Measure your dog, then use the size chart and measuring instructions for the exact coat model. Chest girth and back length are usually the key measurements; some charts also require neck circumference.
Measure your Golden Retriever before choosing a size
Have your dog stand relaxed and straight. Use a flexible measuring tape and record measurements in the units shown on the coat’s chart. Follow the maker’s diagram or wording if it differs from these general directions.
Chest girth
Wrap the tape around the widest part of the torso or rib cage, usually just behind the front legs. Keep it snug, but do not compress the coat. Chest girth matters because a coat that is too tight can restrict movement, while one that is too loose may not sit securely.
Back length
Measure along the topline from the base or lower part of the neck to the base of the tail. Makers may define the starting point differently, so use the instructions for the specific coat rather than assuming every chart measures the same way.

Neck circumference
Measure the neck only if the chosen size chart asks for it. Barc London’s V2 raincoat chart includes a neck measurement and specifies room for two fingers. Its chart applies to that version of the coat; the company notes that the V2 measurements differ from its original raincoat. Check Barc London’s raincoat size chart.
Match every measurement to the exact coat chart
Compare chest girth and back length first, then neck circumference if required. Choose a size whose stated ranges accommodate all the measurements the maker requests. Don’t rely on a chart for another coat from the same brand: sizing can differ between models, and the cut can affect how a coat fits a deep chest, broad shoulders, or lean build.

If chest and back measurements point to different sizes, or no single size accommodates all the required measurements, ask the maker for advice. Consider how the coat closes, how much adjustment it offers, and whether it covers your dog’s torso without pulling around the shoulders. Some charts distinguish between leaner and larger-chested dogs; use those fit notes when available. A coat with documented harness or leash access may also suit your usual walking setup.
What published Golden Retriever examples can—and can’t—tell you
Brand examples can help you understand a particular product chart, but they are not a universal Golden Retriever size. For example, Woof Concept’s Lab IX material includes a 26-inch size example for a Labrador/Golden Retriever group, with a stated girth range of 35.5–41 inches; it also describes a separate chart for larger-chested dogs. Other makers give different examples for their own products: William Walker lists a male Golden Retriever as an example for size 7, with a 56–64 cm back and 80–90 cm chest; Rainhound includes Golden Retrievers among its size L examples, with a 50–60 cm back and 65–80 cm chest. These figures describe separate product charts, not breed averages. Use them only if considering those exact coats, and confirm the current chart before ordering. Follow the specific maker’s advice rather than applying a universal rule. Barc London recommends going up a size for its chart when a dog falls between sizes. That recommendation is specific to its product guidance; another coat’s adjustment range, closure, or cut may call for a different choice.
