There is no reliable universal timetable, and the right plan depends on the species, history, and behavior of the animals.
Before introducing the animals
Start by giving the adopted pet a secure area of its own, with the food, water, resting places, and other essentials it needs. For a new cat, Cats Protection recommends a sanctuary room with hiding places and a litter tray. Let the newcomer explore and settle at its own pace rather than bringing resident pets in to meet it immediately. Cats Protection’s guide to bringing a cat home explains this setup.
Keep a predictable routine and do not force interaction with people or other animals. Some adopted pets adjust quickly; others need more time. The ASPCA describes the first three days as a period when a pet may be nervous and overwhelmed, but its “3-3-3 Guideline” is not a guaranteed schedule for every animal. Ask the adoption organization what is known about the newcomer’s experience with other animals and any behavior concerns; shelter observations cannot guarantee how the pet will respond in a new home. See the ASPCA adoption tips.
Introducing a cat and a dog
1. Keep them apart and exchange scents
Begin with the animals in separate areas. Swap bedding or use separate cloths to carry each animal’s scent to the other. Let each animal investigate—or ignore—the item freely. Do not hold one animal near the other or force them to smell it.

2. Allow sight through a secure barrier
Once both animals can encounter the other’s scent without a worrying reaction, allow them to see each other through a secure barrier. Cats Protection suggests options such as a glass door, a reinforced screen, or a baby gate. Make sure the barrier cannot be knocked over or bypassed. Keep the dog controlled, and give the cat room to retreat, hide, or move to a high place out of the dog’s reach. A gate may help create a dog-free zone, but it does not replace supervision and may not suit every animal or home.
Keep initial visual sessions short. Cats Protection’s current web guidance suggests starting with five minutes and gradually extending sessions if both animals remain relaxed. Stop or shorten a session if either animal becomes distressed; do not treat stillness or lack of contact as proof that an animal is comfortable. See Cats Protection’s current cat-and-dog guidance.

3. Try controlled, direct meetings
When the barrier sessions are consistently calm, try a brief meeting with the dog on a lead and under control. Keep the cat’s escape route open and never let the dog chase a fleeing cat. Reward calm behavior and end the meeting while it is still going well. Cats Protection’s 2022 guide to introducing a cat to dogs also advises gradual, supervised progression.
Continue supervising the animals together. A brief calm meeting does not establish that they are safe together unattended. Cats Protection advises not leaving a cat and dog alone together until you are confident they are happy and secure; its 2022 guide calls for supervision when they are together.

Introducing two cats
1. Give the newcomer a sanctuary
Let the new cat settle in a separate room with food, water, hiding places, and a litter tray before starting introductions. Keep the resident cat out of this space initially, so the newcomer has a safe place to adjust.
2. Swap scents, then use a barrier
Exchange bedding or cloths carrying each cat’s scent. Wait until the cats no longer react with concern before moving on. Next, let them see each other through a solid or transparent barrier that prevents contact. Keep the cats free to retreat rather than blocking their exits or bringing them nose to nose. Cats Protection outlines these stages in its current guide to bringing a cat home and its 2022 introduction guide.

- EXTRA TALL CAT GATE FOR JUMPERS: Adjustable from 47.2 to 86.6 inches high, this indoor pet gate creates a taller doorway barrier for agile cats, active jumpers and multi-pet households. Ideal for helping manage room-to-room access during introductions, feeding or everyday separation.
- PRESSURE MOUNTED FOR DOORWAYS: Designed for openings from 27.5 to 37.8 inches wide. The pressure-mounted setup installs without drilling for standard doorway use. Measure the top, middle and bottom of your opening before ordering and use the narrowest measurement to confirm fit.
- 1.38-INCH NARROW BAR SPACING: Closely spaced vertical bars help reduce opportunities for adult cats to squeeze through while still allowing pets to see and smell one another. Especially useful for cat introductions, foster setups and controlled indoor pet zones. Supervise very small kittens.
- WALK-THROUGH DOOR FOR DAILY ACCESS: The integrated door allows adults to move between rooms without taking down the entire gate. A double-lock design helps keep the door closed during everyday use while maintaining convenient access for people.
- ADJUSTABLE FOR YOUR SPACE: Multiple height sections allow the gate to adapt to different doorway heights, making it useful for bedrooms, kitchens, hallways and other indoor spaces. Tighten pressure points evenly during setup and periodically recheck the gate after regular use.
3. Build up contact at their pace
Keep early sessions short. Cats Protection’s 2022 guidance suggests five to ten minutes, with positive associations such as treats or play when appropriate. Give each cat room to leave. If stress appears, separate them and return to scent swapping or another earlier stage rather than pushing ahead.
The aim may be peaceful tolerance, not friendship. Cats Protection says cats may take from a day to many weeks to tolerate one another; its 2025 behaviour guide also notes a new cat may need weeks to settle. These are possible ranges, not a deadline or promise. Some cats may not be able to live together peacefully. The ASPCA discusses permanent separation or rehoming as possible humane outcomes when chronic conflict persists in its guidance on aggression between household cats.

- Easy to Install: This dog gate measures 29 x 38 inches and fits gate widths from 32 to 35 inches. Installation is simple—just attach four hooks on both sides of the gate and use the four elastic hooks on the mesh to secure it firmly in place
- Tips: Please measure the installation area carefully before purchasing, and reserve 1–2 inches of extra space for the hooks to ensure proper installation. Please note that this product is a mesh pet gate (fabric screen), not a rigid or hard gate
- Dog Mesh Gates: Our mesh gates are suitable for most dogs and can serve as isolation gates to create a secure, enclosed area where you and your family can relax and enjoy time with your furry friends. They also work well for keeping pets in designated spaces to stop them from roaming freely, helping encourage the development of positive habits

- Versatile Usage: Our pet gate can serve in a variety of settings, including staircases, doors, corridors, aisles, and even near fireplaces. The included hooks can be firmly fixed to flat, solid walls or wooden railings, making installation a breeze. Please note that this gate is not suitable for application on wallpaper, wet walls, dusty surfaces, or rugged walls
When to pause or get professional help
Separate the animals after a significant reaction and return to an earlier stage; do not leave them to “sort it out.” Cats Protection recommends contacting a veterinarian or behaviorist if there is a significant reaction during cat-dog introductions. For persistent conflict between cats, the ASPCA recommends help from a Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist or a board-certified veterinary behaviorist.
Ask a veterinarian about sudden behavior changes or if a cat stops eating, as the ASPCA advises. For introductions involving birds, rabbits, reptiles, or other small animals, cat-and-dog or cat-and-cat instructions are not enough to establish a safe plan. Consult a veterinarian or a behavior professional experienced with the species involved before attempting contact.
