Move pets away, and do not sweep or vacuum mouse droppings. Put on rubber or plastic gloves, thoroughly wet the droppings with a suitable disinfectant, wait for the required contact time, then wipe them up. Keep pets away from both the cleanup area and wet disinfectant until the product label says they can return.

Why you should wet droppings before cleaning them up

Mouse droppings, urine, and nesting material can carry germs. Rodents may carry disease without looking ill, and exposure can happen by inhaling contaminated particles or when infected material reaches cuts, eyes, nose, or mouth. Sweeping or vacuuming can stir contaminated material into the air. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) therefore advises wetting rodent waste with disinfectant before wiping it up.

As the CDC puts it in How to Clean Up After Rodents, published April 8, 2024: “Don’t vacuum or sweep rodent urine, droppings, or nesting materials. This can cause tiny droplets containing viruses to get into the air.” The practical point is simple: do not make dry waste airborne. Wet it thoroughly first, allow the disinfectant to work, and pick it up rather than sweeping it away.

This guidance is for a small, accessible household patch. A pile of droppings, numerous nests or dead rodents, or contamination in ventilation ducts calls for a different response; see the escalation guidance below rather than treating it as an ordinary wipe-up. The amount and setting matter: a few droppings on an accessible hard floor can be handled with the routine method, but widespread contamination or a place where rodents may have been living requires more protective measures or professional help.

Clean a small patch in this order

  1. Move pets away. Put dogs, cats, and other pets in another room or otherwise prevent access to the affected space. Keep them away from the product while it is wet. If you keep birds, place them in a separate room or clean outdoors because disinfectant fumes can harm their sensitive respiratory systems. CDC pet-cleaning guidance also says to keep pets away from the area where cleaning and disinfecting are taking place.
  2. Put on rubber or plastic gloves. CDC’s routine instructions for a small household cleanup call for gloves; they do not require a respirator for this situation. Heavy infestations require additional precautions. Have paper towels and the chosen disinfectant ready before you begin so you do not need to leave a contaminated area to gather supplies.
  3. Wet the droppings thoroughly. Use a bleach solution or an EPA-registered disinfectant. Spray until the droppings are very wet, then leave them undisturbed for five minutes or for the contact time stated on the product label, if it specifies a different time. Do not sweep or vacuum first. Thorough wetting matters: the instruction is not to mist the area lightly and immediately wipe it, but to keep the waste wet for the required contact period.
  4. Wipe up the waste. Use paper towels to pick up the droppings and disinfectant. Put the used towels in a covered garbage can. Avoid handling droppings directly, even with gloves, and do not scatter or brush them across the surface.
  5. Disinfect the hard surface. Mop or sponge the area with disinfectant, following the label’s directions for the surface, amount, and contact time. The first application wets and picks up the rodent waste; this follow-up treats the surface itself. Check that the product is suitable for the floor or other material you are cleaning.
  6. Remove gloves and wash your hands. Wash gloved hands with soap and water or disinfectant before taking the gloves off. Then wash bare hands with soap and warm water. Avoid touching your face while wearing the gloves, and wash after removal even if you do not see soil on your hands.
  7. Wait before letting pets back in. Follow the product label’s drying and re-entry instructions. Many disinfectants are toxic while wet and are safe only after drying. If the label calls for rinsing or wiping the surface afterward, do that before allowing access. Keep pets away during the full process, not just while you are picking up the droppings.

For a dog owner asking, “How do I clean mouse poop if I have a dog?” the key difference is access: put the dog somewhere it cannot reach the droppings, towels, disinfectant, or treated surface. The basic cleanup method is still the same. Do not assume a product is safe for a dog just because its packaging uses pet-friendly language; follow the actual directions and re-entry guidance.

Mixing bleach for rodent cleanup

For rodent cleanup, CDC gives a dilution of 1.5 cups of household bleach in 1 gallon of water, or 1 part bleach to 9 parts water. Make the solution fresh before use. Do not mix bleach with other cleaners: mixing it with ammonia can produce dangerous toxic gases. Keep pets out of the area while mixing and using it, and follow the product’s label precautions.

Mix only what you need for the cleanup and use it as directed. Keep the container away from pets and children while you work. Do not combine bleach with another disinfectant, detergent, or household cleaner; the warning about ammonia is especially important, but the safe rule is not to mix bleach with other cleaners at all.

If you choose a commercial disinfectant instead, check that it is EPA-registered and read its label for the contact time, surface compatibility, ingredient precautions, ventilation directions, and instructions for when people and pets may re-enter. A “pet-safe” marketing claim is not a substitute for those directions. Do not use disinfectants listing phenol around cats.

When comparing products, do not judge them only by a broad claim such as “kills germs” or by how quickly they dry. The useful checks are whether the product is EPA-registered, whether its label covers the intended surface, how long the surface must remain wet, whether it has ingredient warnings relevant to your pet, and when the treated area can be used again. These directions can differ by product, so the label for the disinfectant in your hand controls the exact contact time and re-entry procedure.

People commonly ask, “What disinfectant is safe to use around pets?” No product should be treated as automatically safe for use while an animal is present. Choose a disinfectant appropriate for the contaminated surface, follow the label, and keep the pet away during application and while the product is wet. In particular, avoid phenol-containing disinfectants around cats, and keep birds in a separate room or outside during disinfection because fumes can affect their respiratory systems.

Adapt the cleanup to the surface

Bedding, clothing, and stuffed animals

First remove the droppings safely using the wet-disinfection method. Then wash the contaminated item with hot water and detergent. Use a high-heat machine dry or air-dry it in the sun. This applies to washable bedding, clothing, and stuffed animals; keep pets away from the items and the cleaning area until the process is finished.

Do not try to shake dry droppings loose before washing. The essential first step remains dampening and safely removing the waste. Then use the wash and drying method suitable for the item. If the item cannot be laundered, the guidance here does not establish an alternative treatment for every material, so do not improvise by sweeping or vacuuming it.

Carpet and upholstery

After sanitizing and removing the droppings, shampoo the affected material with a commercial disinfectant, or use commercial-grade steam cleaning or shampooing. A routine hard-floor method is not a substitute for treating contaminated fabric or upholstery appropriately.

Choose a treatment designed for the material and follow its instructions, including any requirements about keeping the fabric wet for a stated contact time or allowing it to dry before pets return. Commercial-grade steam cleaning or shampooing is a surface-specific option, not equipment every household needs for a small hard-floor cleanup. Keep pets away from the carpet or furniture while it is being treated and until the cleaning instructions allow access again.

Cardboard and hard containers

Discard cardboard contaminated with urine or droppings. Hard plastic, glass, and metal containers can be disinfected according to the product directions. Do not use the fact that a container looks clean as a reason to skip treatment if it was contaminated; use a disinfectant suitable for its material and follow the label.

If you already swept or vacuumed

Stop sweeping or vacuuming; do not repeat it. CDC says to follow its normal cleanup guidance even if droppings have already been vacuumed. Keep pets away, wet any remaining waste with disinfectant, wait for the contact time, and wipe it up with paper towels. If the vacuum or its contents contacted droppings, do not vacuum further as a cleanup method; the cited guidance does not provide a separate decontamination procedure for every vacuum model, so follow the manufacturer’s instructions for handling and cleaning it safely.

People sometimes ask, “Can I vacuum mouse droppings?” No: CDC advises against vacuuming or sweeping rodent urine, droppings, or nesting material before disinfecting them because the action can put contaminated particles into the air. If it has already happened, do not panic or make another pass with the vacuum. Return to the routine wet-disinfection method for remaining waste, and use the vacuum manufacturer’s instructions for the appliance itself.

When the cleanup is too large for a household wipe-up

Heavy infestation

Piles of droppings, many nests or dead rodents, a vacant dwelling with numerous rodents, or a setting with confirmed rodent-borne disease are not routine small-area jobs. CDC lists coveralls, boots or shoe covers, gloves, goggles, and suitable respiratory protection for heavy-infestation cleanup. Contact local or state health and occupational-safety authorities for appropriate guidance. Do not rely on the small-cleanup steps alone.

The difference is not simply whether one spot takes a few extra paper towels. Heavy contamination and multiple signs of rodent activity call for protective equipment and procedures beyond the small-household instructions. Do not enter a vacant dwelling with numerous rodents and treat it as an ordinary household chore. Seek guidance from the relevant local or state health and occupational-safety authorities, or arrange professional help where appropriate.

Heating or cooling air ducts

If rodents entered the ventilation system, CDC advises contacting a professional rodent-extermination service and points to companies specializing in duct cleaning. Avoid disturbing contaminated material in ducts while arranging help. Do not try to reach into ducts or use household vacuuming as a substitute for specialist service.

Closed homes or outbuildings

CDC’s cleanup instructions include ventilating a closed home or outbuilding for 30 minutes before cleaning. Keep pets out while the space is being ventilated and cleaned. This is a specific precaution for a closed space; it does not replace the other steps, including gloves, wet disinfection, waiting for the product’s contact time, and wiping up the waste.

Keep pets away from droppings and rodent-control products

Do not let pets investigate droppings, touch wet disinfectant, or reach traps or bait. If you set traps, place them where pets and children cannot access them. CDC recommends traditional snap traps for household use and discourages glue and live traps. It says poison or bait stations should be reserved for persistent mouse or rat infestations and used according to their labels.

A trap is a control measure, not part of the cleanup. Put it somewhere a curious pet cannot reach, and follow the product directions. If the problem persists and you are considering poison or bait stations, CDC’s advice is to reserve them for persistent infestations and follow their labels; they should not be left where pets or children can get to them.

Remove food, water, and shelter sources that attract rodents. Store food securely, address accessible sources of water, and reduce places that offer shelter. Fresh droppings appearing after cleanup are evidence of active rodent presence. Continued droppings, urine spots, or gnawing warrant continued control measures and may call for professional help.

Look for whether new signs appear rather than assuming one cleanup solves the underlying problem. If droppings return, rodent activity is continuing and control measures need attention. Keep cleaning and control separate in your plan: remove contamination safely, prevent pets from contacting traps or bait, and address the food, water, and shelter attracting rodents.

What the CDC guidance does—and does not—establish

CDC’s rodent-cleanup instructions are general household guidance, not separate cleanup procedures for dogs, cats, or every other pet. Its pet-cleaning guidance says to keep pets away while cleaning and disinfecting, warns against using phenol-containing disinfectants around cats, and cautions that fumes can harm birds’ respiratory systems. For a particular product, the label remains the operational source for contact time, surface use, and pet re-entry directions.

CDC’s How to Clean Up After Rodents page was published April 8, 2024. Its pet-supply cleaning guidance says: “Keep pets away from the area where you are cleaning and disinfecting.” That guidance was accessed October 13, 2026. The two pieces fit together: CDC provides the rodent-waste method and broad pet precautions, while the disinfectant label supplies the exact directions for the product, surface, and drying or re-entry interval.

The guidance is U.S.-focused. Local product availability and occupational-safety rules can differ, so check local health guidance for situations beyond a small household cleanup. The procedural numbers here—the five-minute soak or label contact time, the bleach dilution, and 30 minutes of ventilation before cleaning a closed home or outbuilding—are instructions, not estimates of infection risk. CDC’s guidance does not give a probability that a particular number of droppings will cause illness.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I clean mouse poop if I have a dog?

Keep the dog out of the area and away from wet disinfectant, used paper towels, and treated surfaces. Wear rubber or plastic gloves, wet the droppings with bleach solution or an EPA-registered disinfectant, wait five minutes or the product’s stated contact time, then pick them up with paper towels. Disinfect the hard surface and follow the label before letting the dog return.

Is mouse poop dangerous to cats?

Rodents can carry disease without appearing ill, and contaminated particles can be inhaled or reach cuts, eyes, nose, or mouth. Keep cats away from droppings and the cleanup area. Do not use disinfectants listing phenol around cats, and follow the chosen product’s label for drying and pet re-entry.

Can I vacuum mouse droppings?

No. CDC advises against sweeping or vacuuming rodent urine, droppings, or nesting material because doing so can put contaminated particles into the air. Wet the material thoroughly with disinfectant, wait for the contact time, and wipe it up. If you already vacuumed, do not vacuum again; use the normal wet-cleanup guidance for remaining waste.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What disinfectant is safe to use around pets?

Use an EPA-registered disinfectant suitable for the surface, read its contact-time and re-entry directions, and keep pets away while applying it and while it is wet. Avoid phenol-containing products around cats. Birds should be in another room or outside during disinfection because fumes can harm their respiratory systems. A marketing claim alone does not replace the label.

How long should disinfectant sit on mouse droppings?

CDC says to let the droppings soak for five minutes or to follow the disinfectant label if it specifies a different contact time. Keep the waste wet and undisturbed during that interval.

What should I do if I find a lot of droppings or rodents in the vents?

Do not treat piles of droppings, numerous nests or dead rodents, or a heavy infestation as a routine glove-and-paper-towel cleanup. CDC lists additional protective equipment for heavy infestations and advises contacting local or state health and occupational-safety authorities. If rodents entered air ducts, contact a professional rodent-extermination service and a company specializing in duct cleaning.

The Bottom Line

For a small, accessible patch, keep pets out, wear gloves, wet droppings with disinfectant before wiping, and obey the product’s contact-time and re-entry directions. Never sweep or vacuum first. Use the appropriate method for the surface, and get professional or public-health guidance for heavy infestations or rodent activity in air ducts.
