How to Clean Out a 60-Gallon Aquarium Safely

Clean a 60-gallon aquarium in stages for routine maintenance, or follow a careful teardown plan for moving and storage. Protect beneficial bacteria, livestock, people, and waterways at every step.

For ordinary maintenance, do not empty a 60-gallon aquarium. Clean it in stages: scrape the glass, clean decorations, service the filter without destroying its bacterial colony, vacuum the gravel during a partial water change, and wipe the outside. A complete drain is appropriate for a move, sale, storage, or genuine teardown. The steps below show how to do either job while protecting fish, people, and the biological cycle.

Choose between routine cleaning and a full teardown

The right method depends on your goal. Beneficial bacteria live on the gravel, filter media, and other wet surfaces. Removing everything at once or washing biological media under chlorinated tap water can destabilize the nitrogen cycle and expose fish to toxic ammonia or nitrite.

Situation Keep fish in the aquarium? Water removed What to preserve
Routine algae and waste maintenance Usually yes A partial amount while vacuuming Gravel, filter media, and wet surfaces
Preparing for a move No, temporarily containerized Drain enough to catch livestock and dismantle safely About 75%–80% of the water when practical, plus wet gravel and biological media
Sale, long-term storage, or disposal No Fully drained Wet biological media until the aquarium is restarted or the media is discarded
Emergency reset after contamination or disease Usually no As directed by the treatment plan Follow the specific disease or chemical-removal protocol; aggressive cleaning can remove the cycle

Aqueon recommends a 25% water change and light substrate vacuuming before a move. If inhabitants are being transported, its guidance says to save approximately 75%–80% of the tank water. Those figures are preparation guidance, not a requirement for every routine cleaning.

How heavy is a 60-gallon aquarium?

“60 gallons” is a nominal capacity. Gravel, rocks, wood, and decorations reduce the actual water volume, but they add weight. Fluval states that an aquarium weighs at least 10 pounds per gallon. A full 60-gallon setup therefore weighs at least about 600 pounds before the stand, substrate, and décor are counted. Never slide, tilt, or carry a filled aquarium, and never assume several people can safely lift it.

For a relocation, drain the tank completely, remove the gravel, and carry the empty tank with two or more people using a stable route. Aqueon’s explicit rule is: “Regardless of size, NEVER lift or transport an aquarium with water or gravel in it.”

Equipment to prepare

  • An aquarium-only siphon and gravel vacuum
  • Dedicated buckets, preferably clean 5-gallon buckets with secure lids for a move
  • A glass-safe algae pad or scraper; use an acrylic-compatible tool for acrylic tanks
  • A fish net and lidded containers for temporary livestock housing
  • Water conditioner or dechlorinator that removes chlorine and heavy metals
  • A water test kit
  • Towels, a microfiber cloth, and a colander or net for removing gravel
  • A battery air pump or other aeration for fish containers when work will last more than a short interval

Use only containers that have never held detergent, bleach, pesticides, oil, or other chemicals. Label buckets so they are not later used for household cleaning. Keep livestock containers shaded, covered against jumping, and away from temperature extremes.

Protect yourself and the fish

Wash your hands before and after aquarium work. Wear gloves if you have cuts, are handling rough rock, or keep spiny fish. The CDC warns that aquarium water and equipment can carry germs. Do not touch your face while working, and clean and disinfect any bathtub or sink used for aquarium water afterward.

For routine work, fish can normally remain in the aquarium if you move slowly and keep equipment away from them. If fish must be removed, use aquarium water in a covered container. Provide aeration when the task will take longer than a brief transfer, and keep the container temperature stable. During a move, keep filter media and gravel wet in aquarium water so their bacterial colonies do not dry out.

Routine cleaning with fish still in the tank

1. Plan the water change and switch off equipment

Arrange buckets and towels before starting. Unplug the filter and other electrical equipment. If a heater is submerged, unplug it and allow it to cool before lowering the water or removing it; exposing a hot heater to air can crack it.

2. Scrape the inside glass first

Clean the inside glass before siphoning so loosened algae and debris can be removed with the old water. Use a glass-safe scraper on glass. Acrylic scratches easily, so use a tool specifically marked for acrylic and check that no gravel is trapped under the pad.

Do not spray household glass cleaner, soap, or disinfectant near the aquarium. Even a small residue can be toxic to fish and invertebrates.

3. Remove and clean decorations

Take out artificial décor and scrub it with hot water. Keep cleaners out of the aquarium. If a separate deep-disinfection treatment with bleach is genuinely necessary, use a controlled dilution appropriate to the product, rinse repeatedly, air-dry completely, and perform a final conditioned-water rinse before the item returns to the tank. Any residual bleach is toxic to aquatic life.

For live plants, remove dead leaves and algae by hand. Do not scrub delicate leaves or leave plants out of water longer than necessary.

4. Service the filter without destroying the colony

Use some of the water you just removed to clean the filter housing, impeller, intake, and mechanical sponges or pads. Gently squeeze sponges in that water until loose sludge is gone. Chlorinated tap water can damage beneficial bacteria.

Handle ceramic rings and other biological media as little as possible. Do not aggressively scrub them or replace all biological media at once. Replace media only when it is physically breaking down, and stagger any necessary replacement so established surfaces remain in service. Reassemble the filter, refill it as required by its instructions, and restore power only after the tank and filter are safely filled.

5. Vacuum the gravel while removing a partial amount of water

Place the siphon outlet in a dedicated bucket and work the gravel vacuum in sections. Let water and waste rise while heavier gravel falls back. Avoid stripping every area bare in one session; leaving some undisturbed substrate helps retain bacterial habitat.

Stop when the planned partial volume has been removed or the bucket is nearly full. A 60-gallon label does not tell you the exact refill volume because substrate and décor displace water.

6. Refill slowly with treated, temperature-matched water

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says tap water should either stand for five to seven days or receive treatment that removes chlorine and heavy metals. In practice, a suitable conditioner is usually the safer option when fish must return promptly; follow the product’s label for the actual volume of new water.

Match the replacement water as closely as practical to the aquarium’s temperature, add it slowly over a plate or plastic bag to avoid disturbing the substrate, and restart equipment. Check for leaks, normal filter flow, and stressed fish. Test water if livestock behave abnormally or if a large amount of substrate or media was disturbed.

7. Wipe the outside

Finish with a damp microfiber cloth on the outside glass, lid, rim, stand, and cords. Keep sprays on the cloth rather than near the aquarium, and dry electrical connections before plugging equipment back in.

Emptying a 60-gallon aquarium for storage, sale, or relocation

1. Prepare containers and a destination

Set up separate lidded containers for fish, plants, tank water, gravel, décor, and filter media. Keep each container shaded and temperature-stable. Do not mix dirty gravel with fish unless there is no alternative; suspended debris can foul the transport water.

2. Do a light pre-move cleaning

Before dismantling, Aqueon recommends a 25% water change and light substrate vacuuming. This removes loose waste while leaving most of the established environment intact. Save about 75%–80% of the water if inhabitants will travel with the aquarium.

3. Catch fish and protect them during the work

Lower the water level only as much as needed to catch fish safely. Transfer them to covered containers filled with aquarium water. Add aeration if the job or journey will last more than a short interval. Keep containers out of direct sun and away from heaters, vents, and cold floors.

4. Preserve plants, gravel, and biological media

Lift live plants carefully and keep their roots or bases wet. Remove gravel with a net or colander and place it in a container with enough aquarium water to prevent drying. Put sponges, ceramic media, and other biological media in aquarium water as well. Do not let these materials dry during the move, and do not rinse them under untreated tap water.

5. Drain and dismantle the tank

Unplug all equipment and let a heater cool before removing it. Drain the remaining water, remove the last gravel, and detach décor and hardware. Inspect seals, cords, tubing, and the stand while everything is accessible.

Never lift or transport the aquarium with water or gravel inside. The tank must be empty before it is moved, even if the distance is only across a room.

6. Clean the empty tank

For algae and mineral stains, Environment Canterbury recommends white vinegar and a microfiber cloth, with an algae scraper for stubborn deposits. Rinse away all vinegar before storage or refilling. If diluted bleach is used for a specific sanitation need, rinse thoroughly, air-dry completely, and treat the first fill according to the product and aquarium protocol because residue is toxic to aquatic life.

Glass and acrylic require different tools: ordinary blades or abrasive pads can permanently scratch acrylic. Never use a razor on acrylic unless the tool is explicitly rated for that surface.

7. Store components safely

Store the dry tank, stand, lid, lights, and accessories in a climate-controlled place. Protect the empty aquarium from twisting forces, freezing temperatures, and objects leaning against its panels. Keep wet biological media in a sealed, labeled container only for the duration of transport; for long-term storage, it will no longer function as an established biofilter and should be treated as new media when the aquarium is restarted.

Water, plants, and fish after the cleanout

Dispose of old water responsibly

Environment Canterbury advises putting used aquarium water on houseplants, gardens, grass, or gravel away from drains. Aquarium water may carry organisms that can harm waterways. Do not pour it into storm drains, streams, ponds, or other natural water bodies.

Never release aquatic plants outdoors

Place unwanted plants in household waste according to local rules, compost them only when permitted, or offer them to another aquarist. Do not put them in a creek, lake, pond, or stormwater system; even a small fragment can become invasive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rehome unwanted fish

Do not flush fish or release them outdoors. The CDC recommends finding a new home. Environment Canterbury’s guidance, updated 11 August 2026, lists aquarium shops, shelters, schools, and community groups as possible contacts and states that rehoming is always the best option. Provide the species, approximate size, current water conditions, and any health concerns to the prospective keeper.

Adjustments for common aquarium differences

Difference What changes Practical rule
Freshwater versus marine Replacement water, testing, and equipment requirements differ Do not substitute untreated tap water for established marine water; preserve the system’s existing water conditions and use water prepared for that aquarium type.
Glass versus acrylic Scratch risk and tool choice Use glass-safe tools on glass and acrylic-rated pads or scrapers on acrylic.
Fish staying versus temporary housing Stress, aeration, and temperature control Leave healthy fish in place for routine cleaning; use covered, aerated, temperature-stable containers for a teardown.
Short local move versus long-distance transport Time without filtration and exposure to temperature changes Keep media and gravel wet in aquarium water, add aeration for longer holding periods, and insulate containers from heat and cold.

Problems that commonly occur

The water turns cloudy after cleaning

Cloudiness can follow disturbed substrate or a disrupted bacterial colony. Confirm that the filter is running, avoid another deep clean, feed lightly, and test ammonia and nitrite. If either is elevated, use conditioned replacement water and seek species-appropriate aquarium guidance rather than repeatedly replacing all media.

The filter will not restart

Check that the housing is filled as required, the impeller is seated, the intake is unobstructed, and every connection is tight. Clean the impeller in removed aquarium water, not chlorinated tap water, and never run a heater dry.

Fish are gasping after the refill

Check temperature, filter flow, and water treatment immediately. Untreated chlorine or chloramine, a temperature shock, or an ammonia or nitrite spike can all cause distress. Test the water and perform a conditioned partial change if results indicate a problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The aquarium leaks after being moved

Stop filling it and move livestock to safe temporary containers. Do not attempt to transport a leaking tank while loaded. A damaged seam or panel requires professional assessment or replacement; silicone patches are not a substitute for structural repair.

A safe order of operations

  1. Decide whether the job is routine maintenance or a complete teardown.
  2. Gather aquarium-only tools, treated-water supplies, towels, and safe containers.
  3. Wash hands, put on gloves when appropriate, and unplug equipment; let the heater cool.
  4. For routine cleaning, scrape glass, clean décor, service the filter in removed tank water, vacuum gravel, refill slowly, and wipe the exterior.
  5. For a move, perform the pre-move partial change, save water, containerize fish, keep gravel and biological media wet, and drain the tank fully.
  6. Move only the empty aquarium and store it in a climate-controlled location.
  7. Put wastewater on suitable land away from drains, and rehome rather than release unwanted fish or plants.
