Choose a Shih Tzu if you want a recognized companion breed with established size and care guidance. A Yorkie–Shih Tzu mix—often called a Shorkie, Shorkie Tzu, or Yorkie Tzu—may suit you if you are comfortable assessing an individual dog rather than expecting a predictable size, coat, or temperament from its label. Both can need frequent grooming, so compare the specific dog’s care needs and behavior with your household’s routine.
What is a Yorkie Shih Tzu mix?
A Yorkie Shih Tzu mix is a cross between a Yorkshire Terrier and a Shih Tzu. PetMD uses the names “Shorkie,” “Shorkie Tzu,” and “Yorkie Tzu” for this cross. The American Kennel Club (AKC) does not recognize it as a breed, and it has no breed standard. Size and safety in your home
The size ranges for these dogs overlap. AKC lists Yorkshire Terriers at 7–8 inches tall and 7 pounds, and Shih Tzus at 9–10.5 inches and 9–16 pounds. PetMD’s broad Shorkie range—7–10 inches and 7–16 pounds—does not mean a mix will be smaller than a Shih Tzu. A puppy’s eventual size cannot be read reliably from the crossbreed name alone. Think about how the dog will be handled and supervised, not just its weight. If children or larger pets live in the home, consider whether interactions can be calm and supervised, especially around a particularly small dog. Temperament, training, and daily routine
AKC describes Yorkshire Terriers as affectionate and sprightly, with terrier heritage; they benefit from moderate exercise, short walks, and mental challenges. It describes Shih Tzus as playful, affectionate, outgoing house companions whose activity needs can generally be met with short walks and indoor play. A Shorkie could take after either parent, but the mix’s name cannot tell you how energetic, sociable, or comfortable with solitude a particular dog will be. Ask about its observed behavior, including its reactions to grooming and handling and how it responds when left alone. For training, AKC recommends praise and treats rather than harsh corrections for Yorkies and notes that training a Shih Tzu can be both amusing and frustrating. The available guidance does not establish that one is universally easier to train; use consistent, reward-based methods and adapt to the dog.

Coat care is a real time commitment
Long coats on either parent breed—and on Shorkies that inherit long hair—can call for daily brushing. AKC’s Yorkshire Terrier grooming guidance names a pin brush, metal-toothed comb, and slicker brush, and recommends regular trimming. For a Shih Tzu, AKC describes daily brushing for a long coat and a professional puppy trim as an alternative to maintaining the full coat. PetMD warns that a Shorkie’s long hair can mat. Small size does not make either dog low-maintenance. The time and need for professional grooming depend on coat length and condition, the dog’s tolerance for brushing, and the services available where you live. Match tools and grooming routines to the individual dog’s coat and comfort.

Health questions to ask
If you are considering a Yorkshire Terrier or a Yorkie mix
AKC says responsible Yorkie breeders screen for eye anomalies and luxating patella, and lists patella and ophthalmologist evaluations as recommended health tests from the national breed club. AKC also advises limiting jumping height, particularly for puppies. For a mix, ask what veterinary records and documented health evaluations for its parents are available; parent-breed screening guidance is useful context, not proof of the mix’s health.
If you are considering a Shih Tzu
AKC notes that a Shih Tzu’s short face and heavy coat contribute to poor heat tolerance and swimming ability. It describes breeder-screening considerations including hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, eye anomalies, and certain eye-surface problems. The AKC profile lists no recommended health tests from the national breed club; that profile field is distinct from the health conditions AKC discusses.
