How Long Should a Dog’s Sniff Walk Be?

There’s no universal timer for a dog’s sniff walk. Start with a relaxed outing, let your dog explore safely, and adjust the length to their comfort and needs.

For many dogs, a relaxed 20–30-minute sniff walk is a practical place to start—not a required minimum or a scientifically established ideal. Let your dog’s comfort and interest guide the length: the aim is time to explore safely, not to cover a set distance.

What counts as a sniff walk?

A sniff walk is an on-leash outing where exploration and scent investigation take priority over a brisk pace or reaching a destination. Your dog can pause to investigate safe scents while you stay attentive to the surroundings and keep the leash under control.

Trainer Erin Lemke, quoted by the American Kennel Club (AKC), says dogs can get substantial sniffing done in 20 to 30 minutes and may be as tired as after an hour-long walk without sniffing. That is practical guidance from a trainer, not the result of a controlled study or a veterinary prescription for every dog. AKC’s guide to the benefits of sniff walks discusses the distinction between a sniff-focused outing and a walk for exercise.

How to choose a duration

  1. Start with a manageable outing. Try 20–30 minutes as a flexible starting point, not a quota. Shorten it or extend it according to how your dog responds.
  2. Choose a route that allows safe pauses. A quiet route with room to stop makes it easier to let your dog investigate without obstructing others or moving into hazards.
  3. Let your dog explore at a comfortable pace. Sniffing is the point, but stay engaged: prevent unsafe pulling, scavenging, or access to traffic and other hazards. VCA’s guidance on dog play and exercise recommends allowing safe exploration during on-leash enrichment walks.
  4. Reassess during the walk. Pause for rest if your dog seems tired or uncomfortable. If the dog repeatedly sits or lies down, becomes out of breath, or seems unable to continue comfortably, stop and reassess rather than pushing on.

Match the walk to your dog

There is no universal timer because dogs differ in age, health, mobility, physical structure, breed, and energy. A short, gentle outing may suit one dog while another is comfortable exploring longer. If your dog is ill, elderly, or has limited mobility, monitor closely and ask a veterinarian what kind and amount of activity is appropriate. VCA notes that exercise needs depend on a dog’s development, behavior, health, and physical structure; Singapore’s Animal and Veterinary Service also advises tailoring care and activity to a dog’s age, breed, health, and body language.

Pay attention to the dog’s state, not just the sniffing. AKC distinguishes relaxed exploration from stress-related sniffing: a dog that seems tense or hypervigilant may not be enjoying the outing. If your dog is unsettled, reduce pressure, choose a calmer route, or head home.

Does a sniff walk provide enough exercise?

Not automatically. A sniff walk offers mental enrichment and some physical activity, but it does not necessarily meet every dog’s exercise needs. A sniff-focused walk prioritizes exploration and dog-led pauses; a brisk exercise walk prioritizes steady movement and cardiovascular activity. These purposes can complement each other, and the right balance depends on the individual dog. Don’t assume that a short sniff walk replaces all other activity simply because it leaves your dog tired.

Leashes, indoor options, and other enrichment

Choose a leash that fits the setting

Use a leash length that gives room to explore while preserving control and complying with local leash rules. PetMD suggests a 10–30-foot leash in less-populated areas; VCA advises that a shorter leash is appropriate in urban environments, while a long leash may suit trails or rural areas. A long line is only appropriate where there is enough space, it is legal, and you can manage it safely. See PetMD’s guide to dog sniffing and scent walks for its leash suggestion.

Try scent games when an outdoor walk is impractical

Hide treats or toys around the home, or offer a snuffle mat or food puzzle for foraging enrichment. These can add scent activity to a busy day, but they are not universal substitutes for exercise. Follow the product’s safety guidance, supervise food-filled or chew toys when there is a risk of choking or swallowing pieces, and account for treat calories. VCA covers these options and supervision considerations in its guide to enrichment, predictability, and scheduling.

When to stop or change the plan

  • Stop for rest if your dog shows fatigue or discomfort rather than expecting them to finish a set time.
  • If your dog is tense, hypervigilant, or unable to settle, consider whether the route or environment is too stressful.
  • If illness, age, or mobility could affect safe activity, consult your veterinarian about an appropriate plan.
