The most reliable way to control litter box odor is to remove the source: scoop waste daily, keep the box clean, and choose an unscented litter your cat will use. Fragranced litter and deodorizers can cover smells without fixing the cause—and may put some cats off their box.
Start with the daily routine
Remove urine clumps and feces at least once a day. The ASPCA recommends daily scooping, and Cornell University’s Feline Health Center gives the same advice for clumping litter. International Cat Care advises removing solid waste once or twice daily. Add fresh litter as needed; fragrance cannot compensate for waste left in the tray.
Wash the box periodically with mild, unscented soap or detergent, then rinse and dry it before refilling. The right interval depends on litter type, how many cats use the box, and how quickly it gets soiled: the ASPCA recommends washing at least weekly, while International Cat Care suggests a thorough clean every one to two weeks depending on use. Clean it sooner if it is dirty or smells.
Choose litter your cat accepts
Unscented litter is a sensible starting point. Cornell says most cats prefer it, and the ASPCA and International Cat Care also advise against scented litter or tray deodorizers. That is general guidance, not a guarantee: cats differ, so make changes gradually and pay attention to whether your cat continues to use the box comfortably.

Clumping litter can make it easier to remove urine waste during daily scooping, but no litter type or brand is established here as a guaranteed odor solution. Consider whether your cat accepts the litter’s feel and whether you can keep it clean consistently.
Make the box easy and comfortable to use
- Size and access: Choose a box with enough room for your cat to enter, turn around, and dig. Make sure the entry is manageable, particularly for a cat with mobility limitations.
- Placement: Put the box somewhere quiet and accessible, rather than in a spot your cat may avoid.
- Number: The ASPCA and International Cat Care cite one box per cat plus one additional box as general guidance.
- Covered or open: A cover may seem like an easy way to contain odor, but Cornell notes that it can hold odors in from the cat’s perspective. Many cats may prefer an open box; follow your cat’s behavior rather than assuming one design suits every cat.
Clean the box without adding another odor
Use mild, unscented soap or detergent for routine box washing. Avoid ammonia-based cleaners: urine contains ammonia, and the ASPCA warns that ammonia may draw a cat back to the same spot. Cornell also cautions against ammonia and vinegar on cat-soiled household items, noting that their smell can resemble urine and may be irritating. Avoid scented cleaners and litter deodorizers that could make the box unpleasant to your cat.

Follow the product label and treat the soiled area thoroughly. Cleaning an accident does not replace scooping and washing the litter box.

If your cat starts eliminating outside the box or their habits change, do not assume the issue is simply odor or housekeeping. Pain, urinary problems, other illness, litter aversion, and box location can all contribute. Cornell recommends a veterinary examination to investigate possible medical causes.

Contact a veterinarian promptly if you notice possible urinary trouble. The ASPCA lists frequent trips to the box with little urine, straining, crying, or blood in the urine as signs associated with urinary problems. These signs do not establish a diagnosis, but they warrant veterinary advice.
