Move your dog from your bed to a crate gradually: first make the open crate a rewarding place to relax, then practice brief closed-door sessions while you stay nearby, and only later use it overnight. For the first nights, place the crate beside your bed. Let your dog’s comfort—not a fixed schedule—set the pace.
Why a gradual transition works
There is no special, separately studied protocol for moving a dog directly from a person’s bed to a crate. The practical approach is to apply general crate-acclimation guidance and adjust to your dog’s response. A dog accustomed to sleeping close to you is being asked to accept both a new sleeping place and, potentially, a closed door. Build comfort with the crate before expecting a full night inside it.
The Humane Society of the United States notes that crate training may take days or weeks depending on a dog’s age, temperament, and past experiences; that is a general range, not a promised timeline for this transition. ( Humane Society of the United States )
Set up a comfortable crate
- Choose a crate that lets your dog stand up and turn around comfortably. Wire and plastic crates are both options. A divider can make a larger crate more suitable while a dog is growing. (UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine; Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine)
- Add a comfortable towel or bed if your dog does not chew or soil it. Put the crate in a familiar area where the family spends time.
- Keep the door open and secured so it cannot swing shut while your dog investigates.
Teach your dog that the crate is a good place
Start with voluntary exploration
Let your dog approach and investigate at their own pace. Toss treats or a favorite toy near the entrance; as your dog becomes comfortable, place them farther inside. Do not push, carry, or lure a reluctant dog in and then close the door. Voluntary entry helps the dog build a positive association with the crate. Pair the crate with meals and calm rewards
Offer meals in or just outside the crate, moving the bowl farther in only as your dog remains comfortable. A suitable food-stuffed toy or chew can also make time in the crate pleasant. These are enrichment and training aids, not treatments for anxiety. Begin with the door open. (Humane Society of the United States; VCA Animal Hospitals)
Practice closing the door before bedtime
Once your dog willingly goes in and can settle, close the door for a brief period while you remain nearby. Open it while your dog is still relaxed. Repeat and extend the time in small steps; increase duration only after comfortable sessions. Next, practice briefly stepping away, then returning, again progressing only while your dog stays calm. Train during the day as well as at bedtime so the crate does not become a signal that you are leaving for the night. (VCA Animal Hospitals; Humane Society of the United States)

Move the nighttime routine from bed to crate
- Begin with the crate next to your bed. Once your dog has practiced settling in it, place it beside the bed or close by for the first nights. Your dog remains near you, and you can hear a puppy who needs to go out. The Humane Society recommends starting this way and moving the crate gradually after the dog is comfortable.
- Keep the bedtime routine familiar. Give your dog a final bathroom opportunity, guide them into the crate without force, and reward calm settling. If your dog is comfortable with the door closed during practice, close it at bedtime; if not, return to shorter, easier sessions instead of making the first overnight attempt a test of endurance.
- Move the crate in small increments. After your dog is sleeping comfortably near you, gradually shift the crate toward its intended location. If your dog becomes unsettled, pause or move it closer again and progress more slowly. (Humane Society of the United States; American Animal Hospital Association)
Respond calmly to whining and nighttime wake-ups
Whining can have different causes, including needing to eliminate or feeling distressed. A young puppy may need a nighttime bathroom break, so do not assume every wake-up is attention-seeking. If a bathroom trip seems likely, take the puppy out quietly and purposefully, then return them to the crate. Avoid yelling, pounding on the crate, or punishing the dog. If whining escalates or continues alongside other signs of distress, reassess the pace rather than insisting the dog stay confined. (VCA Animal Hospitals; Humane Society of the United States)

Do not force a dog to remain crated through pronounced or worsening distress. Excessive barking or vocalizing, pacing, panting, drooling, or eliminating can indicate that a dog is not coping with being confined alone. Cornell advises against forcing a distressed dog to remain crated; a safe, larger area or a sitter may be more appropriate while you seek help. VCA advises ending a session and contacting a veterinarian or veterinary behaviorist when distress is severe. (Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine; VCA Animal Hospitals)
