Make a cat-friendly garden by checking every plant for cat toxicity, removing lilies from any area your cat can reach, and giving your cat sheltered places to rest, hide, scratch, and toilet. Keep garden chemicals and poisons inaccessible. If you want your cat to stay outdoors only within your property, consider secure containment—but no fence or enclosure can be assumed to work for every cat.
Check plants before you buy or plant them
Identify plants by their exact names and check them against a reputable cat-specific toxicity list before they go into the garden. Common names can refer to different plants, and a list of suitable plants is not a guarantee that every plant is harmless in every circumstance. Cats Protection lists catnip, cat thyme, nasturtiums, calendula, lavatera, cosmos, and gerbera as options for a cat-friendly garden. Its guidance also identifies lilies and poppies among dangerous flowers. Keep lilies out of every area your cat can access
Do not plant lilies where a cat might reach them, and do not rely on a separate bed or barrier if the cat can still reach the plant or its pollen. The ASPCA warns that eating any part of a lily—or grooming pollen from the coat—can cause serious kidney damage and may be fatal to cats. Its gardening safety guidance, published April 28, 2022, explains the risk. If you suspect your cat has contacted or eaten a lily, contact a veterinarian promptly.

Give your cat places to rest, hide, scratch, and toilet
A useful garden serves feline needs, not just human preferences. Cats Protection recommends providing a private toilet area, resting spots, shade, hiding places, and natural scratching opportunities. You can adapt these ideas to the space you have:

- Toilet: Set aside a quiet patch of newly dug soil or gravel for digging and toileting.
- Rest and nibbling: Leave a patch of longer grass where your cat can lie down or nibble.
- Shade: Use plants without thorns to help create sheltered shade.
- Scratching: A stable log can provide a natural surface for scratching.
- Hiding: Retain or add places where your cat can get out of sight and feel sheltered.
These are practical design suggestions, not a substitute for checking the identity and safety of plants used in the space. Cats Protection’s garden safety guide covers these features.
Decide whether outdoor containment suits your cat
If your goal is to keep your cat within the garden, containment can reduce opportunities to leave, but it is not a guaranteed solution. Cats Protection suggests a two-metre-high close-boarded fence with a hedge running parallel as an approach that may encourage cats to stay in the garden. RSPCA Australia describes cat-proof fencing or a fully enclosed area made with netting or rigid wire as containment options in its 2024 position paper on cat containment.

Whether a setup works depends on the individual cat and how the barrier is designed and installed. Consider the whole boundary, including likely climbing or jumping routes, and check the enclosure regularly for gaps or damage. The cited guidance does not establish one universally effective design or specification; local rules and conditions may also affect what is appropriate.

Keep your cat away while applying fertilizer or insecticide, follow the product label, and store chemicals and poisons securely. Sheds and outbuildings can also hold substances that are dangerous to cats, so do not treat them as safe hiding places unless hazardous materials are inaccessible. The ASPCA’s gardening safety advice and Cats Protection’s garden hazard guidance discuss these precautions.

If you are trying to deter visiting cats
A garden designed for your own cat has different priorities from one where you want to discourage cats from visiting. For unwanted visitors, the RSPCA suggests measures such as close planting, pebbles or chippings, and a motion-sensitive sprinkler. Any deterrent should be non-harmful and should not create a hazard for your own pets or wildlife. See the RSPCA’s advice on keeping cats out of a garden.
