Say your dog’s name once in a quiet place, then reward the moment they look toward you. Short, positive practice teaches name recognition: it tells your dog to pay attention, not to come to you. Teach “come” as a separate cue.
Teach the name as a cue to look at you
Start somewhere enclosed and quiet, with small, soft treats or another reward your dog enjoys. Wait until your dog is not already looking at you. Say their name once in a cheerful voice. The instant they glance or turn toward you, mark the moment with “yes,” “good,” or a click, then give the reward.

The marker helps pinpoint which action earned the reward. A clicker is optional: a spoken word works just as well for this exercise. Keep practice brief and look for ordinary chances to repeat it throughout the day.

When your dog responds consistently in the quiet setting, make the exercise a little harder at a time: first add some distance, then introduce mild distractions. Continue rewarding the response. Food is convenient because it can be delivered quickly, but a toy, play, praise, or petting can also reward the behavior if your dog values it.

If your dog does not respond
- They ignore the name: Reduce distractions, move closer, or try a reward they find more motivating. Make the exercise easier and build up again when they are responding.
- You have been repeating or shouting: Say the name once. If your dog misses it, change the setup or try again later instead of repeating it louder.
- The name predicts scolding: Use it for positive attention and reward the response. Avoid pairing it with reprimands or “no”; the goal is for the name to predict something good.
- They look but do not come: That is not a failure of name recognition. The name asks for attention; follow it with a separately taught cue, such as “come,” when you want your dog to move toward you.
Teach a new name to an adult dog
Adult dogs can learn a new name through the same positive association: say the new name in an upbeat tone and reward them for orienting toward you. If the old name has a positive history, the American Kennel Club describes bridging the transition by saying the old name followed by the new one, then gradually dropping the old name. Add distractions in small steps as the response develops.

Keep the training humane
Use rewards rather than intimidation or discomfort. AVSAB’s current position-statements page says it continues to stand behind its 2021 humane dog-training statement, which recommends reward-based methods and rejects aversive methods. The ASPCA likewise supports humane training primarily using lures and rewards and opposes equipment that causes physical discomfort or undue anxiety.
