You can make an outdoor Halloween display festive without loose webbing, netting, strings, or other pieces that can snag wildlife. Choose solid decorations such as pumpkins, gourds, straw, and twigs; place them away from animal routes and walkways; keep candy and wrappers contained; and clear the display away after Halloween.
Which Halloween decorations should stay indoors?
Skip stretchy artificial spiderwebs and netting outdoors. Birds and other animals can become caught in the fibers and struggle to escape. The University of Illinois Wildlife Medical Clinic warns that entanglement can cause constrictive injuries and may be fatal. The Canadian Wildlife Federation says rehabilitators do receive animals caught in artificial webbing, but it does not know how often this happens. Put web effects inside windows or doors instead, where they can still be seen from outside.

Avoid decorations with loops, small holes, dangling pieces, loose strings, or tinsel. A leg, wing, head, or antler can catch in them, and small pieces may be swallowed. Choose substantial, solid shapes without loose parts.

What can you use for safer outdoor décor?
Arrange pumpkins and gourds on a base of straw or hay, or use twigs and sticks already present in the yard. Solid silhouettes and window graphics can add a Halloween look without introducing fine fibers or loops. Keep in mind that pumpkins and gourds are edible: animals may feed on them, so placement and cleanup matter.

Do not bleach or chemically treat pumpkins that wildlife could reach. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service warns that painted pumpkin flesh may be toxic to wildlife that eats it. Keep painted pumpkins indoors and away from animals; use untreated produce outdoors.
Where should you place the display?
- Look for paths where animals travel or forage, and keep decorations clear of those routes.
- Avoid areas regularly used by deer. Keep necessary hanging fixtures beyond antler reach, and check uncertain installations in the morning.
- Keep the display out of walkways and entrances so visitors can move safely.
Seasonal produce can attract animals even when the rest of a display is wildlife-conscious. Do not place pumpkins where they obstruct a path or intersect a known movement route.

How should you handle outdoor lights and fire safety?
Switch decorative lights off late at night rather than leaving them on all night. If lighting is needed for people’s safety, use only what is necessary and consider local wildlife and lighting rules. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission guidance for necessary outdoor lighting recommends keeping it low, using wavelengths above 560 nanometers such as amber, orange, or red LEDs, and shielding the light source so it is not directly visible. This is Florida-specific guidance, not a guarantee that a light will be harmless to wildlife everywhere; the agency says turning off unnecessary lights is the simplest and most effective approach.

How do you keep candy and wrappers away from wildlife?
Keep Halloween treats in a covered, sealed container, not loose on an outdoor table or in a display. Pick up wrappers promptly. The University of Illinois Wildlife Medical Clinic warns that candy and plastic wrappers can make animals ill or cause intestinal blockages if eaten.

- Remove pumpkins and other seasonal produce when the display is finished rather than leaving them out indefinitely.
- Check whether your local composting or recycling service accepts pumpkins. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service notes that some zoos or rescue centers may accept pumpkins if they contain no toxic chemicals; check their acceptance rules first.
- Follow local disposal rules. Do not leave produce in a natural area unless local rules allow it.
Wildlife may eat carved pumpkins. Letting one decompose naturally can be an option, but remove it once the display is over. Avoid chemical preservation treatments on any pumpkin that animals might reach.
