Mix the new litter into the familiar litter a little at a time, and let your cat’s use of the box guide the change. Cornell’s advice is gradual mixing, not a fixed day-by-day schedule; if possible, offer a second box with the new litter so your cat can choose without losing access to the familiar option.
How do I change cat litter without my cat refusing the box?
Make the litter itself the main change. Keep the box, location, cleaning routine, and other parts of the setup steady where practical; changing several things at once makes it harder to tell what your cat dislikes.

- Start with the familiar litter. Add a small amount of the new litter to it. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine recommends adding small amounts when a brand change is necessary, but does not specify a standard ratio or duration: Feline Behavior Problems: House Soiling.
- Watch what your cat does. Notice whether your cat enters the box, digs, eliminates, and covers. If the cat continues using it comfortably, increase the new litter gradually. If use declines, pause or reverse the change rather than pushing ahead.
- Offer a choice if you can. Put the new litter in a separate, roomy, accessible box while keeping the familiar litter available in another. The AAFP/ISFM guideline and ASPCA both support providing separate boxes so cats can show which litter they prefer (AAFP/ISFM, 2014; ASPCA, Litter Box Problems). A second tray is useful for testing, not a requirement for every switch.
Do not rely on a promised number of days or a precise mixing schedule: the cited guidance does not establish one. The pace should depend on your cat’s response.

Fine-textured, sand-like, unscented, clumping litter is a sensible starting point, not a universal winner. AAFP/ISFM describes this as a general preference profile and recommends testing different litter types and depths; ASPCA also notes that many cats prefer clumping litter with a medium-to-fine texture and no added scent. Individual cats may prefer something else, and veterinary instructions take priority.

Compare the old and new litter on the features your cat encounters: texture or granule size, scent, and whether it clumps. A product’s fragrance or “less tracking” claims are aimed at people, not proof of feline acceptance. As the AAFP/ISFM guideline puts it, “Cat litter is marketed to people, not to cats.”
If you need a starting depth, AAFP/ISFM’s 2014 guideline recommends at least 1.25 inches (3 cm) for the fine, unscented, clumping material it describes. ASPCA says most cats prefer 1–2 inches. These are different organizations’ general recommendations, not a single required depth; observe your cat’s preference.

- PREMIUM QUALITY: A combination of premium texture and granule size made with 100% bentonite clay for maximum clumping creates litter particles that are just the right size.
- LOW DUST: Ideal for cats and owners who suffer from allergies with a 99.9% dust-free and hypoallergenic litter formulation.
- HARD CLUMPING: Hard clumping medium grain clay helps prevent moisture from reaching the bottom of the tray and forms hard clumps that won't break down, making it easier to scoop.
- SUPERIOR ODOR CONTROL: Formulated for single or multi-cat households with natural ingredients to keep your home smelling clean and fresh between litter box cleanings.
- LOW TRACKING: A unique formulation of medium grain clay helps keep litter in the box where it belongs.
What else can make a cat avoid the box?
A litter change is only one possible cause of avoidance. Box cleanliness, size, entry height, location, stress, conflict with other cats, pain, and illness can all affect whether a cat uses the box. When comparing trays, consider usable space, ease of entry, and location as well as the litter itself.

AAFP/ISFM’s 2014 guideline recommends a box about 1.5 times the cat’s length, measured from nose to the base of the tail. It also reports that adult cats in one study preferred a 34 × 15-inch (86 × 39-cm) box over a smaller one; that study result is not a universal minimum.

Keep the box clean during the trial. AAFP/ISFM recommends removing waste at least once daily and washing the box every 1–4 weeks with soap and hot water, while avoiding strong chemicals and ammonia-based products. ASPCA also advises scooping at least daily. A dirty box can muddy a litter comparison, so do not let cleaning routines change at the same time if you can avoid it.

Pause the switch and restore the last setup your cat reliably accepted. Then consider whether the litter’s texture or scent, the tray’s size or access, its location, cleanliness, or a household change could be contributing. Clean accident spots with an enzymatic pet-odor cleaner; ASPCA advises against ammonia-based cleaners. Do not scold your cat or force them into the box.

Arrange a veterinary exam for new house-soiling or a change in elimination, especially if your cat strains, makes frequent unsuccessful attempts, passes only small amounts, has blood in the urine, cries, or seems unwell. These signs can point to a medical problem rather than a litter preference. If your cat cannot pass urine, seek urgent veterinary care: urinary blockage can be life-threatening.
