How to Dog-Proof Your Bathroom and Keep Toilet Paper Out of Reach

Close off access to the bathroom, secure toilet paper and trash, and put medications and cleaners away. Learn how to combine barriers with training and when ingestion needs veterinary attention.

The most reliable way to keep a dog from shredding toilet paper is to prevent access: close the bathroom door, store spare rolls where the dog cannot get them, and use a suitable gate if the door must stay open. Then secure the trash, medications, cleaners, and toilet. Training can help, but it works best alongside those physical safeguards—not instead of them.

Why dogs chew or eat toilet paper

Dogs may investigate toilet paper out of curiosity, teething, boredom, anxiety, or attention-seeking. The American Kennel Club (AKC) also notes that medical or nutritional issues may contribute. A dog that gets a lively chase or a big reaction after grabbing a roll may find the episode rewarding, even if the paper itself was not the original attraction.

Shredding paper and swallowing it are not the same risk. A dog that chews and spits out paper can still make a mess, but swallowed paper may cause digestive upset and, in some cases, an intestinal blockage. There is no established safe amount that applies to every dog. Repeated ingestion deserves a conversation with a veterinarian rather than an assumption that the habit is harmless.

As Mary Ann Zeigenfuse, owner of Best Friends Obedience, puts it in AKC’s guidance: “If they’re bored, they’re going to be looking for something to do.” That is one possible explanation, not a diagnosis. A dog may be drawn to the texture, may be exploring during teething, or may have learned that taking paper reliably gets a person’s attention. Consider when the behavior happens and what follows it, while still treating repeated swallowing as a reason to check in with a veterinarian.

Start by making the paper inaccessible

Close the bathroom door

If your household can keep the door shut, that is the simplest access barrier. Make it part of the routine when leaving the room, not just when you notice the dog near the roll. If the dog can push the door open, a closed door is not a reliable barrier by itself; use another way to restrict entry.

Think of access prevention as the first step, not a test of whether the dog can be trusted around a tempting object. Each successful raid can give the dog another opportunity to chew, swallow paper, or turn the event into a game. A consistent closed-door habit also protects the rest of the room, including the bin and stored products.

Store spare rolls and tissues securely

Put extra toilet paper and tissues in a cabinet the dog cannot open, or in another location the dog cannot reach. A high shelf is only useful if it is genuinely inaccessible to your particular dog. Consider what the dog can reach by jumping, climbing, or pulling items down—not just what is out of reach while standing on all four paws.

Check the whole storage area rather than only the visible stack of rolls. Tissue boxes, paper products in shopping bags, and supplies left beside the toilet can all provide another target. If a cabinet holds both paper and hazards such as medication or cleaners, it needs to remain securely closed; consider a compatible cabinet latch if the dog can nose or paw it open.

Use a gate if the door needs to stay open

A pet gate can restrict access when a bathroom door cannot remain closed. Choose one that fits the doorway and accounts for your dog’s ability to jump, climb, or push through. Check that it remains in place and does not leave a gap the dog can get around. A gate is a management aid, not a guarantee that every dog will be contained by every design.

After installing or positioning a gate, observe how your dog responds while supervised. A barrier that looks secure may not solve the problem if the dog can get around it or move it. Reassess the setup if your dog finds a route through; use a more reliable way to restrict access rather than relying on repeated verbal corrections from across the room.

Consider a covered dispenser as a second layer

If the roll itself is still reachable, a covered or dog-resistant toilet-paper dispenser may make it harder to grab. Before choosing one, check whether it fits the existing holder, how it installs, whether it covers the roll adequately, and whether your dog can reach around it. The sources do not compare specific models, so no particular holder can be described as guaranteed to resist a dog. Treat a dispenser as a supplement to access control, especially for a dog that is persistent or destructive.

A dispenser can address the exposed roll, but it does not prevent entry to the room or access to the trash, toilet, medications, or cleaners. If the dog can still reach other hazards, prioritize securing those too. Think of the covered holder as one layer in a setup, not a substitute for closing the door or storing spare paper securely.

Secure the rest of the bathroom

Keep bathroom trash contained

A bathroom bin can hold used tissues, paper, and other tempting or unsafe items. Use a covered or locking bin, put it inside a cabinet, or keep it behind a closed door. If your dog can open the cabinet, secure the cabinet too; a latch is useful only if it is compatible with the door and the dog cannot bypass it. Emptying the bin does not replace securing it, since the container itself may remain interesting.

Consider whether the dog can tip the bin over, move it, or work at its lid. A lid that rests loosely on top may not address the problem for a determined dog. If the bin remains reachable, placing it in a closed cabinet or behind a reliably closed door can remove the opportunity more effectively than hoping the dog will ignore it.

Put medications away

Store human medications securely rather than leaving them on a counter, beside the sink, or in a bag a dog could chew. A closed cabinet is not enough if the dog can open it or reach its contents. Keep medicines in their packaging and out of the dog’s access, and do not rely on the dog ignoring a dropped pill.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make the habit apply after each use: put the medication away before turning to another task. If a pill is dropped, keep the dog away while you find and pick it up. If you think your dog has swallowed medication, seek professional advice promptly rather than waiting to see whether signs develop.

Control access to cleaners

Store bathroom cleaning products out of reach. Keep the dog out of the room while spraying or using cleaners, and do not leave products where a curious dog can investigate them. Follow the product label for its own handling and use directions; the general safeguard is to prevent access to the product and to the area while it is being used.

Put products away after cleaning and keep the dog out while you work. If you suspect the dog got into a cleaner, contact a veterinarian or Pet Poison Helpline for advice. Do not try to make the dog vomit or use a home remedy unless a professional instructs you to.

Close the toilet lid

Keep the lid down, particularly if automatic toilet-tank or bowl treatments are in use. A dog may drink from the toilet or investigate the bowl, and chemical products make that access more concerning. A closed lid is a straightforward household routine, but if your dog can lift it, add a more reliable barrier to the room or toilet access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Closing the lid is a practical precaution, but it does not make a bathroom containing other unsecured hazards safe. Keep the dog out if the lid is open while the toilet is being cleaned or if a product is in use, and follow the product’s handling directions.

Compare barriers by the problem they solve

The right setup depends on the bathroom layout and the dog. The practical priority is to restrict access and secure stored items; a dispenser, bin, or latch can address a remaining weak point. Zoetis Petcare, AKC, the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), and American Humane all offer pet-proofing or behavior guidance, but the cited material does not provide comparative tests of named products.

Option What it helps prevent What to check
Closed bathroom door Entry to the room and access to the roll, bin, toilet, and stored hazards Whether the door stays closed and the dog can push it open
Pet gate Entry when the door needs to remain open Doorway fit, stability, and whether the dog can jump, climb, push through, or go around it
Covered dispenser Direct access to the roll when the dog can reach the holder Coverage, installation, compatibility, and whether the dog can reach around the cover
Covered or locking bin Access to trash contents Lid security and whether the bin can be moved, opened, or placed inside a cabinet
Cabinet latch Access to paper, medications, cleaners, or a bin stored in a cabinet Compatibility with the cabinet and whether the dog can bypass the latch

No single barrier is automatically suitable for every bathroom or dog. If one setup fails, identify the access route—door, gap, reachable roll, movable bin, or open cabinet—and change that part of the environment rather than assuming the dog will stop trying.

There is no supported price comparison or product test to use when choosing among these options. Buy or install only what addresses a real weakness in your household setup. For one dog, keeping the bathroom door shut and putting supplies in a secure cabinet may be enough; another may require a gate because the door must stay open. A dispenser makes sense when the dog can reach the mounted roll despite other precautions. Evaluate the fit and the dog’s behavior rather than treating a product label as proof that it is dog-proof.

Teach an alternative to grabbing the paper

Supervise and redirect

When you are in the bathroom with your dog, supervise rather than leaving the dog to investigate the roll or bin. If the dog turns toward the paper, calmly redirect to an appropriate toy or activity. The goal is to make the permitted option available without turning the stolen roll into an exciting chase. AAHA and AKC both support supervision and redirection as part of preventing unwanted household behavior.

Redirection is most useful when the dog has not already swallowed paper and can still be guided to another activity. Keep an appropriate toy available and reward the dog for choosing it. If the dog repeatedly returns to the roll, do not rely on more intense supervision alone: close off access and review the physical setup.

Practice “leave it” and “give” or “drop it”

Teach “leave it” for turning away from something the dog should not take, and “give” or “drop it” for releasing an item already in the dog’s mouth. Practice the cues in ordinary, low-distraction situations with appropriate rewards before relying on them around a tempting roll. If the dog has already taken paper, avoid a dramatic pursuit; use the release cue if the dog knows it, then remove the paper and make the area inaccessible. Training is not a substitute for putting hazards away.

These cues serve different purposes: “leave it” asks the dog not to take an item, while “give” or “drop it” asks for the release of something already picked up. A dog that has not learned a cue in calmer situations may not respond reliably when excited by a roll. Build the skill away from bathroom temptations, then reinforce the response when the dog turns away or releases an item.

Provide activity and appropriate things to do

AKC recommends physical activity and play as part of addressing paper chewing. Offer appropriate toys and opportunities for activity so the dog has an acceptable outlet. The need may differ from one dog to another: boredom, anxiety, teething, and other possible causes call for different responses, and a toy alone may not resolve a persistent pattern.

Notice whether paper grabbing is more likely at a particular time or when the dog is left without an activity. That observation can help you decide whether to adjust supervision and offer an appropriate outlet, but it does not rule out a medical concern. If the pattern continues despite management and activity, discuss it with your veterinarian and consider behavior support.

Avoid punishment and attention as rewards

AAHA cautions against punishing a pet for stealing or damaging household items. Punishment can add fear or conflict without changing the access that made the behavior possible. Likewise, repeatedly chasing or reacting dramatically can make the episode more engaging. Focus on calmly interrupting, redirecting, rewarding safer choices, and preventing another opportunity.

When to contact a veterinarian or behavior professional

After paper ingestion

Contact a veterinarian if your dog repeatedly eats toilet paper, if you are unsure how much was swallowed, or if the dog develops concerning signs. AKC lists vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, lethargy, bloating, pain, weight loss, and inability to eat among possible warning signs associated with ingestion and digestive problems. These signs do not establish a diagnosis, and this guide cannot determine whether a particular amount is safe for an individual dog.

Do not use the appearance of a small amount of paper—or the absence of immediate symptoms—as a universal measure of safety. The right advice depends on the dog and the circumstances. Tell the veterinarian what the dog may have eaten, when it happened, and what signs you have noticed. If you are uncertain, a call is preferable to guessing about a safe amount.

After possible medication or cleaner exposure

If you suspect your dog got into a medication or bathroom chemical, contact a veterinarian or Pet Poison Helpline promptly for professional advice. Do not induce vomiting or try a home remedy unless a professional tells you to; an intervention that seems appropriate can be unsafe depending on what was swallowed and the circumstances.

If the behavior keeps happening

For repeated chewing or ingestion, ask your veterinarian whether a medical or nutritional issue should be considered. If health concerns are addressed and the behavior continues, a qualified dog trainer or veterinary behaviorist can help assess the pattern and build a behavior plan. Persistent anxiety or attention-seeking may need more than a change to the toilet-paper holder.

A practical setup checklist

  • Keep the bathroom door closed, or use a gate that suits the doorway and dog.
  • Store spare rolls and tissues in a closed, secure place the dog cannot access.
  • If the roll remains reachable, consider a covered dispenser as an additional barrier.
  • Secure the bathroom bin and any cabinet containing paper or other tempting items.
  • Put medications and cleaning products away; keep the dog out while cleaners are being used.
  • Close the toilet lid, especially when automatic tank or bowl treatments are present.
  • Supervise, redirect to an appropriate toy, and practice “leave it” and “give” or “drop it.”
  • Seek professional advice for repeated ingestion, concerning symptoms, or suspected chemical or medication exposure.

When checking the room, look at it from your dog’s perspective: can the dog push the door, get around the gate, reach the roll, tip the bin, or open a cabinet? Secure the route that remains available. If your household changes—such as leaving the door open or storing supplies somewhere new—recheck the setup rather than assuming yesterday’s arrangement still blocks access.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my dog eat toilet paper?

Possible reasons include curiosity, teething, boredom, anxiety, attention-seeking, or a medical or nutritional issue. The cause is not always obvious. Prevent access, avoid making the episode an exciting chase, and ask a veterinarian about repeated ingestion or other concerns.

Is it dangerous if my dog eats toilet paper?

Swallowed paper may cause digestive upset and, in some cases, an intestinal blockage. There is no safe amount that applies to every dog. Contact a veterinarian if your dog repeatedly eats paper, you are unsure how much was swallowed, or you notice vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, lethargy, bloating, pain, weight loss, or inability to eat.

What is the best way to keep a dog away from toilet paper?

Start by keeping the bathroom door closed and storing spare rolls and tissues where the dog cannot reach them. If the door must stay open, consider a suitable gate. A covered dispenser can be an extra layer if the mounted roll remains accessible, but no product is guaranteed to resist every dog.

Should I punish my dog for taking toilet paper?

No. AAHA cautions against punishing a pet for stealing or damaging household items. Calmly redirect the dog, use a practiced “give” or “drop it” cue if needed, reward safer choices, and change the setup so the paper is no longer available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if my dog gets into bathroom cleaner or medication?

Contact a veterinarian or Pet Poison Helpline promptly for professional advice. Do not induce vomiting or try a home remedy unless a professional instructs you to.

Will a toilet-paper cover or pet gate keep every dog out?

No universal guarantee is supported. Check whether a gate fits and stays in place and whether your dog can jump, climb, push through, or go around it. For a dispenser, check its coverage, installation, compatibility, and whether your dog can reach around it. Use these products alongside secure storage and access restriction.

The Bottom Line

Keep the bathroom door shut when possible, secure spare paper and other hazards, and use a suitable gate or covered dispenser only where it solves a real access problem. Pair those barriers with supervision, redirection, and practiced cues. Repeated paper ingestion, concerning symptoms, or suspected exposure to medication or cleaners calls for professional advice—not a home remedy.
