Travel with a pet in hot weather by planning for cooler hours, carrying water, securing the animal appropriately, and never leaving it unattended in a parked vehicle. Heat risk depends on the animal and the conditions, so ask your veterinarian about your pet’s health and travel plans before you go.

Start with your pet’s heat and travel risks

Some pets need more caution than others. Short-nosed or flat-faced animals—including short-nosed dogs and flat-faced cats such as Persian cats—can be at higher risk in heat. Extra care is also appropriate for older or overweight pets and animals with heart or respiratory conditions. These characteristics are reasons to discuss travel with a veterinarian, not a diagnosis on their own.

Before setting off, tell your veterinarian how you plan to travel, when you expect to be outdoors, and what health conditions or medications may affect your pet. Ask whether your individual animal should travel, what warning signs are most important for it, and how to reach veterinary care along the route. The AVMA, ASPCA, and Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine all advise particular care for pets with these risk factors.

Make the conversation specific to the trip, not just the destination. A drive with frequent shaded stops presents different practical questions from a flight with a connection, and an itinerary in which the pet must spend time outdoors differs from one where it can stay in a cool, pet-friendly place. The sources do not establish a single safe temperature or trip duration for every animal. Your veterinarian can help assess your pet’s individual condition, but you should still plan conservatively and avoid situations where heat exposure cannot be controlled.

Prepare the trip around heat, not just distance

Choose cooler times for activity

Schedule walks and outdoor stops for cooler parts of the day where feasible. Avoid building an itinerary that requires strenuous activity during the hottest hours. Include breaks and allow your pet frequent opportunities to drink; carry enough water for the journey and a collapsible bowl.

Think through the whole day, including the time spent getting to and from the vehicle, waiting outdoors, and taking bathroom breaks. A departure time that avoids midday heat is useful only if later stops do not expose your pet to the same conditions. Where possible, organize errands, exercise, and outdoor sightseeing for the cooler parts of the day and leave room to change plans if a stop is hotter or more exposed than expected.

Pack for ordinary needs and unexpected delays

A practical travel kit can include:

  • Water and a collapsible bowl
  • A leash and waste bags
  • Your pet’s regular medications and any relevant care instructions
  • Basic first-aid supplies
  • Travel and health documents that may be needed for your route

A bowl makes it easier to offer water, but it does not prevent overheating or make a hot environment safe. Plan stops and accommodations so your pet is not left alone in a vehicle while you obtain supplies, food, or other necessities.

Keep the kit accessible rather than buried under luggage, so you can offer water and take a planned break without unpacking the vehicle. Check that you have enough water for the expected journey and potential delays; the guidance does not specify a universal amount because needs vary. Keep medications and care instructions with you, and confirm with your veterinarian whether there are any trip-specific considerations for your pet’s regular care.

Documents matter most when the route or mode of travel calls for them. Before leaving, determine what the airline or destination requires, who must issue any certificate, and when it must be completed. Do not assume a document needed for one trip, state, or country will satisfy the rules for another. Requirements can change, so verify them for the actual itinerary and date.

Road trips: prevent vehicle heat and injury

Never leave a pet alone in a parked vehicle

Do not leave an animal unattended in a parked car, even for a brief errand. Cracked windows, shade, or a day that feels mild outside do not make this safe. The AVMA also advises against leaving a dog unattended in a running car with air conditioning.

Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine reports that when the outdoor temperature is 70°F, a car interior can rise by 40°F in an hour, with most of that increase occurring in the first 15–30 minutes. This is a warning about how quickly conditions can change, not a safe-time calculation: it does not establish that any specific temperature or length of stop is safe.

If you need to stop somewhere pets cannot enter, arrange for another adult to remain with the animal and vehicle, or use another pet-safe plan. Do not leave the animal alone while you go inside. If no safe arrangement is available, change the stop or itinerary.

This needs to be decided before the trip, not once you have arrived at a shop, restaurant, or attraction. Check whether pets can accompany you where you plan to stop; if not, arrange for another adult to stay with the animal or choose a different stop. If the plan depends on leaving the pet alone “just for a few minutes,” it is not a safe plan. Shade and open windows do not remove the risk, and running the air conditioning is not a substitute for supervision.

ASPCA quoted Dr. Louise Murray, vice president of the ASPCA Animal Hospital, saying: “Pet owners should never leave their animals unattended in a parked vehicle,” and that parked cars, “even with windows open, become very hot in a short amount of time, and this can lead to heatstroke or death.” The core advice is straightforward: take the pet with you where permitted, have a responsible adult remain with it, or avoid the stop.

Restrain your pet for the ride

Use a restraint or travel crate that fits both your pet and your vehicle. Cornell describes a crash-tested harness, seat belt, or travel crate as options. ASPCA guidance recommends a crate secured so it cannot slide, or a back-seat harness attached to a secured seat belt. Those descriptions do not mean every harness or crate has been crash-tested; check the equipment’s actual safety evidence, fit, and instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not let your pet ride loose in the vehicle or with its head out of the window. A suitable restraint helps keep the animal contained during the trip; an unsecured carrier or poorly fitted restraint may not serve that purpose.

Choose the arrangement with the individual animal and vehicle in mind. A carrier should fit the pet, and a crate should be secured against sliding; for a harness, follow the equipment’s instructions and check that it can be attached to the vehicle as intended. Do not assume that a product is crash-tested simply because it is sold as a pet restraint. The cited guidance supports using suitable restraints, but it does not rank brands or certify all products. If you are uncertain about fit or setup, ask your veterinarian or the manufacturer for product-specific instructions.

Keeping a pet’s head inside the vehicle also avoids exposing it to the hazards of riding at the window. The animal should remain contained for the entire drive, not just when the car is moving quickly. A leash or carrier that is not secured to the vehicle is not the same as a properly fitted travel restraint.

Outdoor stops: protect paws and limit exertion

Use shaded places for outdoor breaks when available, and avoid hot asphalt or pavement that could burn paws. For dogs, Cornell offers a simple screening aid: if you cannot keep a hand on the pavement or stand barefoot on it for about 10 seconds, it may be too hot for a dog’s paws. This is not a guarantee that pavement is safe when it passes the test; use judgment and choose a cooler, shaded surface when possible.

Keep walks short enough for the conditions and take breaks rather than pushing through a planned distance. Offer water frequently. If a stop is exposed to direct sun or has hot ground, move to a shaded, cooler location instead of relying on water alone.

The pavement test is a warning screen, not a permission slip. It applies to dogs’ paws and does not replace choosing a cooler surface or watching how your animal is doing. If the ground is very hot, select another route or a shaded place to pause. Plan for rest and water during activity rather than trying to complete a set distance regardless of conditions. Water, shade, and breaks are useful parts of a plan, but none makes prolonged exposure to heat safe.

Recognize heat stress and treat serious signs as an emergency

Warning signs in AVMA, ASPCA, and Cornell guidance include excessive panting or difficulty breathing, an increased heart or respiratory rate, heavy drooling, weakness, restlessness, unsteadiness, abnormal gum or tongue color, confusion, vomiting or bloody diarrhea, seizures, and collapse.

If you suspect heatstroke or your pet shows concerning signs, contact or go to an emergency veterinary hospital immediately. Cornell describes heatstroke as life-threatening. Do not treat this article as a home-treatment substitute or wait for a severe sign such as collapse before seeking veterinary help.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Some warning signs may be easier to notice during a quiet break than while an animal is moving or excited. Pay attention to changes in breathing, behavior, steadiness, and strength, as well as the more severe signs listed above. If something seems wrong, do not keep walking or continue the itinerary as if the pet simply needs to finish the activity. Contact an emergency veterinary hospital promptly for guidance and care.

Because heatstroke is an emergency, decide in advance how you will locate veterinary help while traveling. Ask your veterinarian for route-specific advice and know how to contact a clinic or emergency hospital near your planned stops. The guidance here is not a checklist for treating heat illness yourself: the critical action when serious signs or suspected heatstroke occur is to get veterinary care immediately.

Flying with a pet in warm weather takes extra coordination

Air travel adds risks that are different from driving: an animal may be exposed to heat during handling, layovers, or time on a tarmac, and airline rules differ. Before booking, discuss the animal’s health with a veterinarian—especially for a short-nosed pet—and confirm the requirements for the exact airline, route, animal, carrier, and travel date.

  1. Check suitability with your veterinarian. Ask about respiratory health, heat risks, and precautions for the particular animal and itinerary.
  2. Check the airline’s current rules before you commit. Confirm whether the animal and carrier are accepted on each leg and what temperature restrictions or other conditions apply. Do not assume one airline’s policy applies to another.
  3. Favor cooler departure times where feasible. AVMA advises choosing earlier or later flights in warm weather and avoiding midday heat when possible.
  4. Keep the itinerary simple. Minimize layovers that could leave an animal in a cargo hold or on a tarmac, and verify how the airline handles the animal during connections.
  5. Confirm documents and deadlines for the destination. Contact the airline, your veterinarian, and the relevant destination authority about current health certificates, entry documents, and timing. Requirements depend on the destination and travel mode and can change.

AVMA’s travel guidance discusses veterinary certificate requirements for certain interstate and international contexts, but it does not make one document rule universal. The requirements for a particular journey depend on where you are going and how you are traveling.

Driving and flying call for different planning. On a road trip, your central controls are keeping the animal out of an unattended parked vehicle, securing it for the ride, and choosing cooler, shaded places for breaks. For a flight, the airline’s acceptance rules, how the animal is handled during the journey, layovers, temperature restrictions, and destination documents become central. Neither mode is automatically appropriate for every pet; the animal’s health and the exact arrangements matter.

Do not book on the basis of a rule you remember from another airline, route, season, or year. AVMA notes that airline temperature restrictions differ. Confirm the policy for every leg, the animal, and the carrier, and recheck close to the travel date in case requirements have changed. If a connection creates a long wait or a possible period in a cargo hold or on a tarmac, ask the airline how that segment is handled and consider whether a simpler itinerary is possible.

AVMA’s 2023 travel brochure describes veterinary certificate requirements for certain interstate and international travel contexts. That guidance is not a universal document checklist for all pets and routes. Check current requirements with the relevant airline, your veterinarian, and the authority for the destination, including any deadlines that apply. A requirement may depend on both where you are going and how you are traveling.

Know that vehicle laws vary by location

ASPCA reported on July 16, 2026, that 32 states and the District of Columbia have laws addressing animals left unattended in confined vehicles under dangerous conditions. Legal consequences and rescue provisions differ. That national overview is not state-by-state legal advice: check current local law rather than assuming the same rules apply everywhere or that a legal exception makes leaving your pet safe.

The law is not a substitute for the safety plan. The ASPCA’s overview describes differing legal consequences and rescue provisions, and a national count does not tell you the rule for a particular location. Check current local law if you need to understand the legal context, but do not treat a possible exception as permission to leave an animal alone in a parked car. The practical recommendation remains not to do so.

There is no universal safe temperature or trip duration

The cited guidance does not establish a single safe outdoor temperature or a maximum trip length that applies to every pet and journey. A pet’s health, the conditions during stops, and the transport arrangements all matter. Plan conservatively, ask your veterinarian about your animal, and do not use the car-temperature statistic or pavement screening test as permission to take a risk.

That uncertainty is a reason to make a flexible plan, not to guess at a threshold. A car can heat quickly even when the outside temperature seems moderate, and the Cornell statistic describes one example rather than a universal prediction for every vehicle and condition. Likewise, a pavement screening test can flag potentially hot ground but cannot guarantee safety. Allow for cooler-hour activity, water, shaded breaks, suitable restraints, and a way to avoid leaving the pet unattended.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I leave my pet in a parked car if the windows are cracked?

No. Cracked windows, shade, or a seemingly mild day do not make it safe to leave an animal unattended in a parked vehicle. Cornell reports that at 70°F outdoors, a car interior can rise by 40°F in an hour, with most of the increase in the first 15–30 minutes. Do not use that statistic to calculate a safe stopping time.

Is it safe to leave a dog in a running car with the air conditioning on?

The AVMA advises against leaving a dog unattended in a running car with air conditioning. Take the pet with you where permitted, arrange for another adult to stay with it, or change the stop.

What should I pack for a hot-weather trip with my pet?

Pack water and a collapsible bowl, a leash, waste bags, regular medications and care instructions, basic first-aid supplies, and any travel or health documents required for your route. A bowl helps you offer water, but it does not prevent overheating.

How can I tell if pavement is too hot for my dog’s paws?

Cornell suggests that if you cannot keep a hand on the pavement or stand barefoot on it for about 10 seconds, it may be too hot for a dog’s paws. Treat this as a screening aid, not a guarantee that pavement is safe when it passes. Prefer shade and cooler surfaces.

What are signs of heat stress in a pet?

Warning signs include excessive panting or difficulty breathing, increased heart or respiratory rate, heavy drooling, weakness, restlessness or unsteadiness, abnormal gum or tongue color, confusion, vomiting or bloody diarrhea, seizures, and collapse. If you suspect heatstroke or see concerning signs, contact or go to an emergency veterinary hospital immediately.

What should I check before flying with a pet in hot weather?

Ask your veterinarian about your pet’s health, especially if it is short-nosed. Check the current rules for the exact airline, route, animal, carrier, and date; favor earlier or later flights where feasible; minimize layovers; and confirm destination documents and deadlines with the airline, veterinarian, and relevant authority.

Are there laws about leaving pets in hot cars?

The Bottom Line

Plan around cooler hours, bring water and a collapsible bowl, secure your pet appropriately, and arrange stops so the animal is never left unattended in a parked vehicle. Ask your veterinarian about your pet’s individual risks, watch for heat-stress signs, and treat suspected heatstroke as an emergency. For flights, verify current airline, route, and destination requirements before you travel.
