You can draw a convincing puppy with a pencil, paper and a few simple shapes. The most reliable starting point is a nine-step seated-puppy outline: establish an angled head, add ears and face, build the legs and body, then finish with light details, a ground line, tracing and color. Three additional approaches let you construct the same subject from circles, change its expression or pose, and practise with printable or book-based lessons.

The four approaches below are an editorial way to organize practice, not four separately validated systems from one source. Begin with the guided outline if you are new to drawing, then use the other approaches to understand proportion and make your puppy look individual.

  • Graphite pencil
  • Drawing paper
  • Colored pencils or crayons for optional coloring
  • Black marker for tracing the finished pencil lines

A soft eraser is useful even though it is not part of the listed materials. Work lightly until the head, ears, legs and body are in the right places; darker lines should come only after you are satisfied with the construction. You do not need a particular brand of paper, pencil or coloring tool.

Art Projects for Kids estimates about 45 minutes for its classroom puppy project. That is a guide for the complete lesson, not a guaranteed completion time. A first attempt may take longer because you are checking symmetry and erasing construction lines.

How to make a drawing look like a puppy

A puppy is not simply an adult dog reduced in size. Art Projects for Kids explains that “Puppies aren’t just smaller versions of adult dogs — their proportions are different in some very important ways.” In practice, use visual cues rather than fixed breed measurements:

  • Make the head a little larger than you initially expect in relation to the body.
  • Keep the legs and torso shorter, with softer, less angular contours.
  • Give the muzzle enough room for a nose and small mouth without making it long and narrow.
  • Use rounded transitions at the cheeks, shoulders and belly instead of sharply defined adult musculature.
  • Keep the eyes open and readable; a slight increase in eye size can reinforce a youthful expression, but avoid making them so large that the animal looks cartoonishly surprised.

These choices suggest youth across many breeds, but they are not a standard for every puppy. A dachshund puppy, for example, will still have a different silhouette from a spaniel or a shepherd puppy.

Choose the approach that fits your goal

Approach Best for What you build Main limitation
Guided nine-step outline A first finished seated puppy One complete drawing from a head outline to color It follows one pose, so it offers less freedom at the start
Circle construction Understanding placement and proportion Overlapping head, body and muzzle forms The circle method is general dog guidance rather than puppy-specific instruction
Expression and pose variation Making several puppies that do not look identical Changes to eyes, mouth, ears and sitting posture Small changes can affect the balance of the whole figure
Printable or book practice Repeatable lessons, classrooms or guided study A nine-panel printable or a series of projects Printed resources guide practice but do not replace observing your own proportions

Approach 1: follow a guided nine-step outline

This is the most direct route to a recognizable seated puppy. Draw with a light touch and treat every stage as a checkpoint. The sequence is adapted from the puppy directed-drawing lesson published by Art Projects for Kids.

  1. Angle the head. Start with a broad U-shaped head, tilted slightly rather than perfectly upright. The tilt gives the puppy a friendly, alert attitude and leaves room for the ears to hang at different angles. Keep the top of the head wide enough to support a youthful, oversized look.
  2. Add the ears and their interiors. Attach one ear on each side of the head. They can droop, fold or angle outward, but their bases should connect naturally to the skull. Draw a smaller inner shape inside each ear to show the fold; keep this line light so it does not become a dark outline that flattens the form.
  3. Erase construction lines. Before adding the face, remove stray overlaps and any head marks that run through the ears. Leaving a clean silhouette now makes the later tracing stage much easier.
  4. Place the eyes and nose. Put the eyes on a gentle horizontal curve rather than forcing them into exact mathematical symmetry. Add a central nose below them, then a short mouth line. Leave a little space between the eyes and nose so the face does not collapse into one dark patch.
  5. Draw the front legs. Bring two relatively straight legs down from the chest. Check that their outer edges are similar in length and that the paws rest at roughly the same level. Slight differences keep the drawing from looking mechanical, but large differences will make the puppy seem to be leaning.
  6. Connect the belly and back legs. Join the chest to a short, rounded belly, then add the folded or planted hind legs at the sides. Keep the torso compact and the legs soft-looking; long, thin limbs read more like an adult dog.
  7. Add small details. Indicate toe nails and a few light fur lines. The source lesson deliberately keeps fur rendering simple. A handful of directional marks around the cheeks, chest or paws gives texture without obscuring the silhouette.
  8. Draw a ground line. A short grass line or simple horizontal baseline anchors the feet. It also helps you check whether the paws are sitting on one plane instead of floating at different heights.
  9. Trace and color. Once the pencil drawing is balanced, trace the lines with a black marker if you want a stronger finished contour. Then add colored-pencil or crayon layers. Test pressure on scrap paper first: a lighter first layer is easier to adjust than a heavy block of color.

Pause after steps four, six and eight. At each pause, look at the drawing from a short distance. You will spot a crooked eye, uneven paw or drifting belly line more easily than when your face is close to the page.

Approach 2: build the puppy from simple circles

Shape-based construction is useful when you want to design your own puppy instead of copying one outline. Wacom’s beginner dog tutorial, available in its search-result description, uses three circles for the dog’s body and face and adds a smaller circle for the muzzle. That guidance applies to dogs generally, not specifically to puppies, so use the circles as adjustable scaffolding rather than a fixed puppy formula.

  1. Place the body circle. Draw a light oval or circle for the torso. A seated puppy benefits from a slightly upright body shape, while a lying puppy can use a wider oval.
  2. Add the head circle. Overlap a larger circle with the front or upper part of the body. For a youthful appearance, let the head circle be a little larger than the body circle instead of shrinking both equally.
  3. Insert the muzzle circle. Add a smaller form in the lower middle of the head. It establishes the plane that will carry the nose and mouth and prevents the muzzle from becoming a long adult-dog wedge.
  4. Mark the center and eye line. Lightly draw a vertical centerline across the head and a curved horizontal line for the eyes. These guides can follow the tilt of the head, so they do not have to be perfectly vertical or horizontal on the page.
  5. Attach ears and limbs. Treat ears as soft folded shapes connected to the head circle. Use tapered cylinders or simple curved blocks for the legs, then wrap paws around the bottom of those forms. Keep the legs short and the joints rounded.
  6. Replace circles with contours. Trace the cheek, neck, chest, belly and haunches with a continuous, confident line. Erase the circles only after the outer silhouette works. Add the eyes, nose, mouth and a few fur marks last.

The advantage of this method is correction: moving a circle is easier than redrawing a detailed head. If the puppy looks too old, enlarge the head circle or shorten the body before you spend time on fur. If it looks unbalanced, check whether the body and head overlap at a believable neck rather than adding more detail.

Approach 3: change the expression and pose

Once the basic proportions are stable, small changes can create a curious, sleepy or playful puppy. A beginner video description from Christopher Hart says its puppy lesson covers expressions, a sitting pose and puppy proportions. It does not establish a formal four-method system, but those subjects make useful practice targets.

Three expression adjustments

  • Curious: Tilt the head, raise one brow or eye shape slightly, and let one ear lift while the other drops. Keep the nose centered on the head’s new axis.
  • Sleepy: Lower the upper eyelids, soften the mouth line and let both ears fall. Avoid erasing the eye shapes entirely; a narrow visible opening still communicates direction.
  • Playful: Open the mouth into a small rounded shape, show a hint of tongue if desired, and angle the head toward a raised paw. Keep the open mouth subordinate to the eyes so it does not dominate the face.

Two beginner-friendly pose changes

For a sitting puppy, keep the chest upright, place the front paws under the shoulders and fold the hind legs outward or forward. For a standing puppy, lengthen the torso only slightly, move the belly higher and separate the four paws along a shared ground line. Do not simply stretch every part of the seated drawing; that produces an adult-looking animal. Redraw the spine and belly first, then attach the legs.

When you alter an ear or eye, redraw the centerline and eye line before adding details. A head turned three-quarters will show one side of the muzzle more than the other, so perfectly equal eyes and ears will look pasted on. Keep the far-side features slightly narrower, not necessarily smaller in every drawing.

Approach 4: practise with a printable or a book

Repeatable reference material is helpful when you are teaching a child, running a class or trying to build confidence through several short attempts.

Free printable practice

Art Projects for Kids offers a free printable coloring page and a downloadable tutorial alongside its web instructions. A search result describes the PDF as a nine-panel sequence; the parent page independently links the PDF tutorial and coloring page. Print one copy for following the stages and a second copy for trying a different ear, expression or color pattern. Because the PDF’s detailed panel text is not independently available here, use the parent page’s written sequence as the definitive instructions.

Book-based practice

Susie Hodge’s How to Draw: Puppies is listed in the January 2023 Search Press catalog as a 32-page paperback containing 28 puppy drawings taught in six steps. Its ISBN is 9781800921078. The catalog entry does not establish current stock or price, so check a bookseller or library for present-day availability. This option suits someone who wants many short projects rather than one classroom-style drawing; it is not evidence that the book’s method is superior to the free lesson.

How to use references without tracing blindly

  1. Copy one lesson once to learn its sequence.
  2. Close the reference and redraw the same puppy from memory, using only a few construction shapes.
  3. Compare the two drawings for head size, eye placement, leg length and ground contact.
  4. Make one deliberate change, such as a different ear fold or head tilt.
  5. Label the change in the margin so you know which adjustment produced the expression you wanted.

Troubleshooting common first-attempt problems

The puppy looks like an adult dog

Increase the head relative to the torso, shorten the legs and round the belly and shoulders. Do not rely on adding more fur; texture cannot correct an adult silhouette.

The face is lopsided

Re-establish a centerline that follows the head’s tilt. Check the distance from each eye to that line, then place the nose below the midpoint between the eyes. Unequal ears are acceptable when the head is turned, but the eyes must follow the same perspective.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The legs do not meet the ground

Draw the ground line before redrawing the paws. Adjust each leg upward or downward until the paw bottoms share the same surface, then erase the old foot marks. A simple baseline is more convincing than adding shadows to hide floating feet.

The drawing is crowded with fur lines

Erase most of the marks and keep only a few light strokes that follow the form: outward on the cheeks, downward on the chest and around the paws. The directed lesson uses light fur lines, not a fully rendered coat.

The marker made a mistake

Do not trace until the pencil version is settled. If a mistake is already inked, incorporate it into a new ear edge, collar or background shape rather than repeatedly scrubbing the paper. For the next attempt, photograph or photocopy the pencil drawing first and trace the copy.

A simple practice plan

Use the 45-minute estimate from Art Projects for Kids as a flexible target for a complete first lesson. Spend the early part on the head, ears and facial placement; reserve time for the body, details, tracing and color. On later attempts, skip full coloring and make three small variations instead: one with a larger head, one with a different ear position and one with a changed expression. Comparing those versions teaches proportion faster than polishing one drawing indefinitely.

When your puppy is recognizable in pencil, add color in a separate pass. Choose a light base layer, then a darker tone under the ears, chin, chest and folded legs. Keep the nose and eyes the darkest focal points. A plain background and a short grass line are enough to finish the scene; extra scenery should not compete with the face.
