Because kidney disease and other conditions can change which medicines are safe, a veterinarian should assess any cat whose movement or usual behavior has changed and monitor the response.
How do I know if my cat is in pain from arthritis?
Feline osteoarthritis is a chronic joint condition that can make ordinary movements and activities painful. Cats often conceal discomfort, so a change from an individual cat’s normal routine is more informative than any single behavior. A cat that stops jumping to a familiar surface may be painful, but the same change can also result from weakness, injury, neurologic disease or another illness.

Home observations worth recording
- Less jumping, climbing, running or playing, or taking longer to rise after resting.
- Hesitation on stairs or difficulty getting into a high-sided litter pan.
- Changes in grooming, posture, sleep location or interaction with people and other animals.
- Accidents outside the litter box when entering, exiting or squatting has become difficult.
- Periods of irritability, withdrawal or reluctance to be handled, especially around a particular joint.
These observations do not diagnose arthritis. Write down when they occur, what activity precedes them and whether they are getting better or worse. Short videos of walking, using stairs, jumping and entering the litter box can give your veterinarian useful information that may not appear during a brief clinic visit.

Why a veterinary assessment matters
The veterinarian will consider the cat’s history, mobility, physical examination and other possible causes of pain. Overall health and concurrent disease affect treatment decisions. In particular, screening before an NSAID is prescribed and follow-up monitoring are emphasized in the 2024 ISFM/AAFP consensus guideline on long-term NSAID use in cats (Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery, 2024).

Why arthritis treatment is usually multimodal
No single intervention suits every cat or reverses established joint disease. Medication can reduce pain enough for a cat to move, groom and use the litter box more comfortably, while weight management, controlled activity, rehabilitation and environmental changes reduce mechanical strain and make necessary movements safer.
The 2024 ISFM/AAFP guideline states: “Chronic pain should be managed using a multimodal approach, ideally involving pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies (eg, environmental modifications and complementary treatments such as acupuncture, laser therapy and physical therapy).” The combination should be tailored to the cat’s examination findings, kidney and other organ function, temperament, household layout and observed response.
What can I give my cat for arthritis pain?
Only a veterinarian should select, prescribe and adjust a pain medicine for a cat. Human pain relievers can be dangerous, and a cat should not be given an over-the-counter product, a leftover prescription or another animal’s medicine. Do not change the dose, stop treatment or combine medicines without veterinary instructions.

Frunevetmab (Solensia)
Frunevetmab is a monoclonal antibody targeting nerve growth factor and is administered by subcutaneous injection once a month, according to the 2024 guideline. In the United States, the FDA describes Solensia as an approved treatment for pain associated with osteoarthritis in cats (FDA: Osteoarthritis in Cats). The UK government describes a UK-authorised 7 mg/ml product for alleviation of osteoarthritis-associated pain (UK product announcement). Approval, wording of the indication, prescribing requirements and availability are jurisdiction-specific; a veterinarian should check the current local label.
The guideline reports improvement versus placebo on caregiver-reported and other outcome measures in clinical trials. Reported possible adverse effects include skin reactions, hair loss (alopecia) and itching. A veterinarian can explain whether the product is suitable when a cat has other illnesses, receives other treatments or has previously reacted to an injection. Monthly administration means the clinic, rather than the caregiver, controls the injection schedule and can assess the cat at visits.
NSAIDs
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are an important option in feline acute and chronic pain care when they are appropriately prescribed and monitored. The American College of Veterinary Surgeons notes that concern about toxicity can limit long-term use, particularly in cats with kidney disease (ACVS: Osteoarthritis in Cats). This is a risk-management decision, not a rule that NSAIDs are always unsafe or always appropriate.

Before prescribing, the veterinarian may review hydration, kidney and liver status, gastrointestinal history, other medicines and the cat’s ability to return for monitoring. The exact approved indication, formulation and label instructions differ among products and countries, so a precise regulatory claim or dose cannot be generalized. Follow the product-specific veterinary instructions and contact the clinic if appetite, vomiting, stool, drinking, urination or behavior changes after treatment.

How can I help my cat with arthritis without medication?
Weight management
For an overweight cat, a veterinarian-guided weight plan can reduce the mechanical load on painful joints. The target rate, calorie intake and diet should be individualized: rapid restriction can create health problems, and a cat that refuses food needs prompt veterinary advice. Weighing the cat regularly and recording food intake helps the clinic adjust the plan rather than relying on visual estimates.
Appropriate activity and rehabilitation
Gentle, regular movement can help preserve function, but an arthritis plan should not force a painful cat through exercise. The FDA lists increased exercise and physical rehabilitation among supportive approaches and gives examples including stretching, swimming or hydrotherapy, and shock-wave therapy. A veterinarian or qualified rehabilitation professional should decide which, if any, are appropriate, how often they should occur and how to progress them.

Supplements and complementary care
The ISFM/AAFP guideline discusses omega-3 fatty acids and complementary modalities such as acupuncture, laser therapy and physical therapy. Evidence and product quality vary, and supplements can interact with medicines or add calories. Treat them as possible adjuncts discussed with the veterinarian, never as a proven substitute for analgesia, monitoring or treatment of another disease.

The FDA identifies several practical adaptations for cats with osteoarthritis. Introduce one change at a time and watch whether the cat actually uses it.
- Lower-sided litter pans: A low entry reduces the need to step over a tall wall. Keep the pan on the same floor and route the cat uses most, and provide enough boxes for the household.
- Raised food and water bowls: Elevating dishes can reduce bending for some cats. Use a broad, stable base that cannot slide or tip, and keep food and water where the cat does not need to climb.
- Ramps or steps: A ramp or a series of shallow steps can provide access to a favorite resting place. Secure it so it does not wobble, and add a surface that gives traction.
- Soft, easy-to-reach bedding: Place supportive bedding in warm, draft-free locations at floor level or on a platform the cat can reach safely. Several resting options let the cat choose without repeated climbing.
- Traction and clear pathways: Non-slip runners on smooth floors and removal of obstacles can make short trips less demanding. Keep litter, food, water and resting areas close enough that the cat does not have to cross a slippery or crowded route.
These changes improve accessibility; they do not cure osteoarthritis. A ramp that is too steep, a bed with a high rim or a bowl that slides may create a new barrier, so adjust the setup to the individual cat’s strength, balance and preferences.

How to monitor whether treatment is working
Pain relief is best judged by function and quality of life, not by sedation or a single good day. Before treatment, record a few repeatable activities: distance walked, time needed to rise, use of a step, litter-pan entry, grooming and interaction. Continue the same observations after each treatment change.
Use caregiver records and videos
A dated log can include medication or injection date, appetite, drinking, elimination, sleep location, play, jumping and any suspected adverse effect. Videos taken at home can show the cat in a familiar environment and allow the veterinarian to compare movement over time. The 2024 guideline discusses caregiver videos and clinical metrology instruments as tools for monitoring response.
Know when to call the clinic
Contact the veterinarian about a sudden decline in mobility, refusal to eat, repeated vomiting or diarrhea, marked lethargy, new skin lesions or itching, or any other change that follows a medicine or injection. Do not compensate for a disappointing response by giving extra doses. The veterinarian may reassess the diagnosis, check laboratory results, alter the medicine, add a non-drug measure or investigate another source of pain.
A practical treatment discussion with your veterinarian
- Bring a clear history: Describe when mobility or behavior changed, which activities are difficult and what you have recorded at home.
- Review the whole health picture: Ask what screening is needed before an NSAID or another medicine, and explain every prescription, supplement and over-the-counter product the cat receives.
- Set a measurable goal: Choose one or two daily activities, such as entering the litter pan or reaching a favored bed, to track during the initial treatment period.
- Build the multimodal plan: Decide which medication, weight strategy, activity or rehabilitation and home adaptations fit this cat. Clarify the administration schedule, follow-up timing and signs of adverse effects.
- Reassess rather than guessing: Share the log and videos at follow-up. Treatment can be adjusted based on observed comfort, laboratory monitoring and the cat’s ability to complete normal activities.
Because authorisations and labels differ by country and can change, ask the clinic which products are currently approved where you live and what their official indication is. A plan that is safe for one cat may be inappropriate for another with kidney disease, dehydration, gastrointestinal disease or multiple medicines.
