A tube feeder filled with an appropriate seed blend is a practical first step for many small perching birds, but feeder style, food, species, and disease precautions all depend on your region and current wildlife guidance.
Start with watching, not shopping
You can enjoy winter birds from a window, porch, balcony, or local path without buying a feeder. Snow, bare branches, and low winter vegetation often make birds easier to see. Keep binoculars and a regional field guide near a window, learn a few calls, and record the date, weather, location, and species you notice.

Feeding is optional. Birds already use many natural food sources, and a feeder should supplement—not replace—native habitat. If you do feed, the combination of food, water, and shelter matters more than any single product. As Steve Kress, former Executive Director of Audubon’s Seabird Restoration Program and Vice President of Bird Conservation, put it: “With the right combination of feeder and food, your backyard can be a refuge for birds and a stage for watching their colorful antics.”

Choose a feeder by the birds you hope to see
There is no universal feeder or seed. Match the feeding surface and food to the birds you want to attract, then consider whether the design fits your space and cleaning routine.
| Setup | Food examples | Birds named in the guidance | Best use and cautions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tube feeder | Black oil sunflower, mixed seed, safflower, peanuts | Chickadees, titmice, nuthatches, goldfinches, siskins, purple finches, house finches | A straightforward first feeder for small perching birds. Choose metal ports to make squirrel damage harder, and mount it at least 5 feet high. Keep it close to a window or at least 30 feet away to reduce collision risk. |
| Hopper feeder | Safflower, sunflower, cracked corn | Tube-feeder visitors plus cardinals, jays, grackles, and red-winged blackbirds | A larger, roofed reservoir that helps keep seed dry and accommodates bigger birds. Its greater capacity also means more seed can sit long enough to spoil if you overfill it. |
| Suet feeder | Suet and bird pudding | Woodpeckers, titmice, nuthatches, chickadees; sometimes wrens, creepers, and warblers | Useful when your priority is woodpeckers and other clinging birds. Inspect suet frequently in warm weather, when it can turn rancid or melt. |
| Nyjer feeder | Nyjer seed | Goldfinches, redpolls, and pine siskins | A specialized choice for small-beaked finches. Buy only as much as birds are using so old seed does not remain in the ports. |
| Ground feeder | Cracked corn, milo, millet, sunflower, mixed seed, wheat, oats | Doves, juncos, sparrows, towhees, and goldfinches | Place it where birds have nearby escape cover, but do not scatter seed directly on the ground. Ground feeding can increase contact with damp debris and predators, so it requires particularly careful cleanup. |
Audubon’s winter-feeding guidance describes three essentials: “the right mix of quality seed and other foods, a source of fresh water for drinking and bathing, and ample cover from native plants.” Treat the table as a starting point rather than a promise of particular species.
A practical first setup
- Pick one target group. A tube feeder is a sensible beginning if you want to watch chickadees, titmice, nuthatches, or finches. Choose suet instead if woodpeckers are your priority.
- Use a stable mounting point. Hang or pole-mount the feeder at least 5 feet above the ground. Keep it near dense brush so birds can retreat from predators, but not so close that a cat can hide and ambush them.
- Set a collision-safe window distance. Put the feeder very close to a window or at least 30 feet away. Intermediate distances can give a bird room to build speed before striking the glass.
- Start with a small amount of fresh food. Refill based on use rather than filling a large hopper for weeks. Discard damp, moldy, or stale food.
- Observe before adding equipment. After you know which birds are present, add a specialized feeder only if it solves a real observation goal.
Make winter habitat more than a seed station
Winter birds need calories, cover, water, and protection from storms. Native plants can supply fruit, seeds, and insects while also giving birds places to hide. The right species are location-specific: a plant recommended for the Great Lakes region may be unsuitable or invasive elsewhere.

Find plants for your region
Use a local native-plant society, county extension service, botanical garden, or state wildlife agency to identify plants native to your exact region. Ask for winter fruiting shrubs, seed-producing perennials, and evergreen or dense plants that provide shelter. Confirm mature size, sunlight, soil, moisture, and whether a plant is invasive before buying it.
Do not remove every fallen leaf or stalk. Leaving some natural litter and standing stems can preserve insects and seeds. A brush pile placed away from doors and paths can shelter birds from wind, snow, and predators. Nest boxes may provide additional shelter when installed and maintained for species that use them in your area.
Provide water safely
A birdbath can be as useful for observation as a feeder, but it needs more attention. Place it away from falling debris and animal droppings. Replace the water daily or every other day, scrub away buildup, and prevent ice from leaving birds without access. A heated bath can help in freezing weather if it is designed for outdoor use and kept on a safe, stable surface; follow the product instructions and keep electrical connections protected.

Keep pets away
Keep cats indoors and prevent dogs, livestock, and other pets from reaching feeding and bathing areas. Even a well-fed cat can kill a bird that is concentrating on a feeder, and repeated disturbance may make birds abandon a site.

Feeders concentrate birds, which can make disease transmission easier. Remove uneaten food, sweep fallen bits, and let every feeder dry completely before refilling it. Increase cleaning frequency during humid or hot weather, when food and droppings spoil faster.
Routine interval
Audubon’s 2021 safety guidance calls every other week a good starting point for cleaning seed and suet feeders, with more frequent cleaning preferred in humid or hot conditions. Birdbath water should be replaced daily or every other day.

Two published cleaning approaches
Audubon’s 2021 article describes scrubbing with soap and water, followed by a 50-50 vinegar-and-water soak. A separate Audubon Great Lakes article gives a different mixture: nine parts water to one part bleach for feeders. These are not one combined recipe. If you use a disinfectant, follow the current instructions from your state or local wildlife agency, the product label, and the feeder manufacturer; rinse thoroughly and dry the feeder completely before adding food.
- Empty the feeder and dispose of wet, moldy, or leftover seed rather than dumping it beneath the feeder.
- Remove caked debris with a brush or disposable scraper.
- Wash or disinfect using one current, clearly labeled method—not a mixture of methods.
- Rinse until no cleaner remains.
- Dry all parts completely, including ports, seams, and trays.
- Sweep the feeding area and refill with a modest amount of fresh food.
What to do when a bird looks sick
Do not try to catch a sick bird that is still mobile. If you see sick or dead birds, take down feeders and drain birdbaths for a few days, then report the sighting to your state wildlife agency. Local recommendations can change as disease conditions change, so check the latest regional notice before putting equipment back out.

Audubon Great Lakes reported that, beginning January 1, 2022, 49 states had recorded positive highly pathogenic avian influenza cases in commercial flocks, backyard flocks, wild birds, or wild mammals, attributing that dated figure to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. It is not a current prevalence estimate. Use your own wildlife agency’s active guidance for present conditions.

Reduce window collisions
Feeders can bring birds into view while also increasing the chance of a strike. The safest placement choices are very close to a window or at least 30 feet away; avoid the middle distance. Make glass more visible with exterior decals, cords, screens, or other bird-safe markers applied according to the manufacturer’s directions. Treat multiple windows on the same wall if birds approach from several angles.
When should you start or stop feeding?
There is no universal start or stop date. Seed-eating birds use food from many sources, and Audubon says beginning or ending feeding at a particular time usually has little effect on migration schedules. Continuing to feed does not prevent migratory birds from following their own schedules.
A snow or ice storm that buries natural food is an exception: accessible supplemental food may be especially helpful during the storm and immediately afterward. If you stop feeding, do it because of disease concerns, an inability to maintain cleanliness, local restrictions, or a change in your household—not because you fear that birds will forget how to migrate.
Enjoy birds without feeding them
Spend time near natural cover, listen for calls, and look for tracks in snow or mud. A small notebook or phone record can reveal which weather patterns bring particular species to your yard. You can also participate in Cornell Lab’s Project FeederWatch, which invites people to count birds at feeders during the season. Counting birds is useful even when your feeder is empty; record what you actually see rather than what you hoped to attract.
If hummingbirds disappear
Hummingbird presence is strongly seasonal in many regions. When a feeder suddenly goes quiet, check local migration reports, flowering plants, weather, and recent neighborhood observations before assuming the feeder or sugar solution is the cause. Continue to maintain any feeder you leave out, and remove it if local wildlife authorities advise doing so.
