Estimate a kitten’s age by checking its eyes, coordination, teeth and weight together. These signs can place a kitten within a useful age range, but none gives an exact birth date. Weight is most dependable as a cross-check in kittens with good body condition and only through about 10 weeks, according to ASPCApro’s guidance.
Check four clues to estimate age
Look for a pattern across several developmental signs rather than relying on a single feature. ASPCApro recommends considering whether the eyes are open, the kitten’s weight, how it walks and plays, and which teeth have appeared.

Eyes
Kittens are born with their eyes closed. They begin opening at around 8–12 days and are usually fully open by about two weeks. Eyes that are still closed therefore point to a very young kitten, while open eyes alone do not establish an exact age.

Kittens generally begin walking at around three weeks, but their coordination takes longer to develop. A kitten that walks well and plays is at least about four weeks old, according to ASPCApro. Early steps may be unsteady, so assess coordination alongside the other clues.

Teeth
Baby teeth, also called deciduous teeth, begin appearing at around three weeks. ASPCApro’s 2023 kitten chart places the milestones roughly as follows:
- Week 3: deciduous incisors begin to appear.
- Week 4: canines appear.
- Week 5: lower premolars appear.
- Week 6: upper premolars appear.
- Weeks 7–8: all deciduous teeth are expected to be present.
Permanent incisors begin replacing baby incisors at around 12 weeks, with the next incisors appearing at about 14 and 16 weeks. Permanent teeth typically emerge during the three-to-four-month period. Baby teeth are smaller and more pointed; permanent incisors are wider and have flatter edges. Very small teeth can be difficult to distinguish, so treat tooth development as an age range, not a precise calendar.

Weight
For a kitten in good body condition, ASPCApro gives this rough rule of thumb:
| Weight | Approximate age |
|---|---|
| 1 pound | About 4 weeks |
| 2 pounds | About 8 weeks |
| 2.5 pounds | About 10 weeks |
This is a rough cross-check, not an age calculator. Weight gain is most predictable only through about 10 weeks, and the rule should not be extended into older kittenhood. Body condition matters, and the chart’s ranges should be considered alongside developmental milestones. A scale can measure weight, but it cannot measure age.

Interpret the signs as a range
Developmental clues overlap. A veterinary review of feline development describes assessing weight together with age-dependent physiological changes; its reported windows for ear-canal opening and baby-tooth eruption overlap, which is another reason not to treat a single milestone as an exact date. See Feline neonatology: From birth to commencement of weaning – what to know for successful management.
When clues disagree, consider which signs point to the same stage, the kitten’s body condition, and whether a clue marks an early milestone or a broad later-stage change. State the result as an approximate range. The available guidance does not establish a precise error margin for estimating an individual kitten’s age.

- Eyes closed and no visible teeth are consistent with a very young kitten.
- Newly emerging baby teeth and early, unsteady walking point to the weeks around the start of walking and tooth eruption.
- Good coordination and play indicate at least about four weeks; use tooth development and weight as additional checks.
- Permanent incisors suggest the kitten is entering the three-to-four-month period, rather than a younger age that can be estimated from the pound-per-month rule.
Use age estimates to guide care, not replace assessment
Age helps frame care, but the kitten’s health and abilities also matter. Weaning usually begins at around four weeks and is generally complete between eight and 10 weeks, according to the ASPCA’s cat nutrition guidance. The ASPCA advises against weaning too early and recommends keeping kittens with their mother during weaning when possible. Kittens can learn eating, litter-box habits and play by observing her.
If the estimated age would affect feeding, treatment or another care decision, ask a veterinarian to assess the kitten rather than relying on a visual estimate. The age clues can help you describe what you have observed, but they do not replace an individual evaluation.
