A sudden limp can come from a paw or nail injury, a bite wound, a soft-tissue injury, or a more serious problem such as a fracture, infection, or joint injury. The limp alone cannot identify the cause. If your cat cannot stand or walk, has severe pain, suffered major trauma, or has trouble breathing, seek emergency veterinary care now. Otherwise, keep your cat quiet, avoid manipulating the leg, and contact a veterinarian for guidance—especially if the limp persists, worsens, or comes with other symptoms.

When a sudden limp is an emergency

Go to an emergency veterinary hospital now if your cat has any of these signs:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • They cannot stand or walk without assistance, or are dragging a limb they cannot move.
  • The leg is visibly deformed, a bone is protruding through the skin, or there is severe pain.
  • Your cat has experienced major trauma, such as being hit by a car.
  • The limp occurs alongside breathing trouble, significant bleeding, disorientation, or extreme lethargy.

Do not wait to see whether an emergency sign resolves. Keep your cat as still as you can and call the veterinary hospital while arranging transport.

Seven possible reasons a cat may limp suddenly

These are possibilities, not diagnoses. Several conditions can look alike, and the source of pain may not be visible from the outside.

1. Paw injury or something caught in the paw

A cut or puncture, a thorn or splinter between the toes, debris under a pad, or a broken nail can make a cat avoid putting weight on a leg. If your cat allows it, a gentle look at the paw may reveal an obvious problem; do not dig for an embedded object.

2. Bite wound or abscess

A bite can introduce bacteria and lead to a painful swelling. The wound may be small, hidden under fur, or deeper than it looks. A cat with an abscess may also seem lethargic or lose their appetite.

3. Sprain, strain, bruise, or other soft-tissue injury

Muscles, tendons, or ligaments can be injured without leaving an obvious wound. A cat may limp after an awkward landing or other activity, but do not assume a mild-looking limp is only a strain.

4. Fracture

A broken bone can cause severe pain, swelling, or an abnormal limb position. Do not straighten the leg or test whether it moves; a veterinarian needs to assess the injury.

5. Dislocated joint or ligament or tendon injury

A displaced joint or damaged ligament or tendon can make a cat stop using a leg. Handling or bending a suspected injury can worsen pain, so leave assessment to veterinary staff.

6. Infection or inflammatory disease

Infections affecting soft tissue, bone, or a joint can cause lameness. Tick-borne disease and immune-mediated joint disease are also among the possible causes. Other symptoms or an examination may be needed to distinguish these from an injury.

When to contact a veterinarian if it is not an emergency

Guidance differs on how long to wait for a non-emergency limp: VCA Urgent Care advises assessment if it does not resolve in less than an hour; VCA’s cat first-aid guidance advises veterinary care if lameness persists for more than 24 hours; PetMD advises contacting a veterinarian if it does not improve within a day or two. These are not assurances that waiting is safe. Seek advice sooner if your cat cannot bear weight, seems painful, worsens, develops swelling, or has other symptoms.

A limp with no visible injury still deserves attention if it persists: pain or damage may be deeper in the limb, or the cause may not be an injury. Sudden onset also does not establish whether the problem is minor or serious.

What you can safely do while arranging care

  • Restrict activity. Keep your cat indoors in a quiet, small area and prevent jumping, running, and rough play.
  • Look only if your cat tolerates it. You can gently check for a visible cut, broken nail, or easily accessible object on the paw. Stop if your cat reacts with pain. Do not force a full examination, bend joints, or manipulate a suspected fracture or dislocation.
  • Note what has changed. Record which leg is affected, when the limp began, any possible trauma, whether your cat can bear weight, and whether signs are changing. A short video can help the veterinarian if the limp comes and goes.
  • Do not give human pain medicine. Many human medicines are toxic to cats. A veterinarian must choose pain relief and treatment based on the cause and your cat’s needs.
  • Transport gently. Place your cat in a carrier while supporting the head and hips. A carrier with a removable top lets you lower them in rather than forcing them through a door. Leave your cat in the carrier at the clinic until staff can help.

Pain can make even a normally calm cat bite or scratch. Avoid forceful handling, especially if the leg looks deformed or your cat is very distressed.

What the veterinarian may do

The veterinarian will ask about the onset and any possible trauma, observe how your cat moves, and examine the bones, joints, and muscles for pain, swelling, or injury. X-rays and routine laboratory tests are common starting points; joint-fluid analysis, CT, MRI, or biopsy may be considered when indicated.

Treatment depends on the findings. It may include prescribed pain relief, antibiotics for infection, fracture stabilization, or surgery. An abscess may need drainage or flushing, antibiotics, pain relief, and restricted activity.
