These clues point to a developmental range, not an exact birthday, so avoid relying on any one feature alone.
1. Check whether the kitten’s eyes are open
Kittens are born with their eyes closed. They begin to open at about 8–12 days and are usually fully open by around two weeks, according to ASPCApro. Cats Protection gives a broader window of five to fourteen days. Because the timing varies, open eyes are a clue to an early developmental stage, not a precise age test.

Newborn kittens’ ears are folded and become upright as they develop. Their eyes may also change from baby blue as they mature. Treat ear position and eye color as supporting context, not stand-alone age markers; see Kitten Lady’s age guide.

Weight can help estimate age during early development, especially when a kitten is in good body condition. ASPCApro gives rough examples: a one-pound kitten is about four weeks old, and a two-pound kitten about eight weeks old. The organization says weight gain is relatively predictable only until about ten weeks.

Those examples are estimates, not a conversion chart that works for every kitten. Illness, poor body condition and individual variation can all affect weight. If you have a suitable scale, use it to track changes over time rather than treating a single reading as an age detector.
3. Watch how the kitten walks and plays
Movement changes quickly as kittens grow. ASPCApro says most begin walking at around three weeks. A kitten that walks well and plays is at least about four weeks old. In the earlier stage, walking may look wobbly; Cats Protection describes movement becoming more confident over time.
Consider what the kitten can do consistently rather than judging from one attempt. A young kitten may still be unsteady even as it begins exploring, so mobility helps narrow the estimate but does not reveal an exact age.
4. Look for baby teeth and emerging adult teeth
Baby teeth start appearing at around three weeks. The first permanent incisors begin to appear at roughly twelve weeks, followed by the remaining incisors at about fourteen and sixteen weeks, according to ASPCApro.

Kitten teeth are tiny and can be difficult to distinguish. Check gently and do not force the kitten’s mouth open; tooth appearance alone is not reliable enough to assign an exact age.
How to combine the clues
- Use eye development, weight, mobility and teeth together. A single sign—or a photo—can be misleading.
- Compare the kitten’s overall development with the approximate milestones rather than expecting every kitten to match them exactly.
- If the clues point to different age ranges, treat the estimate as uncertain and ask a veterinarian or shelter professional to assess the kitten.
For more developmental context, PetMD’s kitten development guide also describes growth milestones.

When to get veterinary help
Age estimation can wait if a kitten appears well, but signs of illness should not. Contact a veterinarian promptly if the kitten is weak, is not eating, is losing weight or is having trouble breathing.
