Let a high-strung cat decide whether to approach, start with a few light strokes where it already accepts touch, and stop at the first sign of discomfort. “High-strung” describes behavior; it is not a diagnosis. A cat’s tolerance can vary by individual, moment, and body area.
1. Let your cat choose contact
Approach calmly and leave a clear way for your cat to move away. A relaxed cat that comes toward you is a better candidate for petting than one you have to reach for. Don’t pull a cat out of a hiding place or disturb it while it is resting.

Stillness does not necessarily mean consent. A cat that freezes or stays motionless may be uncomfortable, so pause and give it room rather than assuming it wants to be touched. For guidance on cat-friendly handling, see the 2022 AAFP/ISFM Cat Friendly Veterinary Interaction Guidelines.
2. Start with a few gentle strokes
Begin with brief, light strokes in an area your cat has already shown it accepts. Move in the direction of the fur; the AAFP/ISFM guidelines state, “Cats are most comfortable when being petted or massaged in the direction of their fur.” Preferences differ between cats, so don’t assume that an area one cat enjoys will suit another.

3. Stop at the first warning sign
End the contact and give your cat space if you notice signs that it may be becoming uncomfortable. These can include:

Don’t wait for a swat or bite. Stop, let your cat move away, and allow it to initiate contact again if it wants to. A cat’s body language can offer useful context, but interpret the whole situation rather than relying on one signal; see PetMD’s guide to reading cat body language.

A small treat may be an optional reward when your cat voluntarily tolerates brief, gentle strokes. It should not be used to coax a cat into touch it is avoiding. Cornell describes treating a cat for allowing brief, light stroking without aggression in its guidance on feline behavior problems and aggression.
When touch sensitivity may need veterinary attention
If your cat’s reaction to touch is new or getting worse, especially if it is focused on one area or comes with other behavior changes, ask a veterinarian to assess it. Pain can make touch uncomfortable; don’t assume a sudden change means your cat is simply difficult or anxious. Avoid touching spots where it shows pain or discomfort. The ASPCA’s guidance on aggression in cats also emphasizes that medical issues can be part of a behavior change.
