When skipping food may be the simplest plan
Aquarium Co-Op’s general advice is that healthy fish can go without food on trips of a week or less. That guidance has important exceptions: it does not apply as a blanket rule to fry or unhealthy fish, and it is not intended for longer absences. Species, age, health, and aquarium conditions all affect what is appropriate, and the cited guidance does not establish a universal fasting limit.

If your fish are healthy and the trip is short, avoiding an untested feeder or unfamiliar food may be simpler than changing their routine. Don’t give them a large meal before departure to “make up” for missed feedings; excess food can become waste in the aquarium.

How to use an automatic feeder safely
A feeder is useful only if it works reliably with your food and aquarium. Set it up several days before you leave, rather than installing it on departure day.

When to ask someone to check the tank
A sitter can do more than dispense food: a person who visits can notice an obvious problem and report it. A sitter is especially worth considering for a longer trip, fish with individual feeding requirements, or an aquarium that you want checked while you are away.

- Write down exactly which fish to feed, what food to use, and how much.
- Measure portions in advance so the sitter does not have to guess.
- Explain the normal feeding routine and how to contact you if something seems wrong.
- For trips longer than a week, consider Oase’s suggestion of visits at least twice a week.
Overfeeding by someone unfamiliar with the aquarium can cause problems, particularly in a small or newly established tank. Avoid instructions such as “feed a pinch”; a pre-portioned amount is clearer. Aqueon’s vacation tips also discuss the risk of a sitter giving too much food.

Are vacation food blocks a good idea?
The advice is mixed. Aqueon presents vacation blocks as an option and recommends trying unfamiliar food before departure. Aquarium Co-Op warns that dissolving blocks can contribute to ammonia spikes and algae blooms. Because these sources do not establish that blocks are safe for every tank, don’t treat one as a risk-free substitute for a tested feeder or a sitter.

Prepare the aquarium before you leave
Do routine maintenance a couple of days before departure, not at the last moment. That gives you time to observe the fish afterward and confirm the equipment is running. Oase likewise recommends preparing ahead, testing a feeder, and giving a sitter clear instructions and contact information. Avoid adding new fish immediately before a trip; newly introduced inhabitants need close observation.
