The clearest example is the alligator gar: it mainly inhabits freshwater, yet it is unusually tolerant of salt water and is found in estuaries and coastal bays. That does not mean every gar species shares the same saltwater tolerance.
Can gar live in saltwater?
Yes. Alligator gar can use salt-influenced coastal habitats as well as freshwater. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission describes the alligator gar as the gar species most tolerant of salt water, while noting that it primarily lives in freshwater, including large, slow-moving rivers, lakes, swamps, and bays. In Texas, alligator gar are recorded in coastal bays, estuaries, and the Intracoastal Canal system, alongside rivers that drain into the Gulf of Mexico. These coastal records show that the fish can enter brackish or salt-influenced water; they do not make it primarily a marine fish. A 2008 Texas Parks and Wildlife Department technical report says alligator gar are routinely captured in estuarine habitats, especially at salinities of 20 parts per thousand (ppt) or lower. That is a description of capture conditions in estuaries—not a maximum salinity the species can tolerate. The report also says movement and habitat use were not well known, so the figure should not be treated as a universal biological limit. Does this apply to every kind of gar?
No. “Gar” refers to multiple species, and the strongest evidence for saltwater tolerance here is about alligator gar. Texas Parks and Wildlife identifies four gar species in Texas: alligator, longnose, shortnose, and spotted gar. Florida gar, for example, is described by Florida’s wildlife agency in freshwater streams, canals, and lakes. Avoid assuming that the coastal-water habits documented for alligator gar apply equally to every gar species.
Species identification matters when interpreting a sighting. An alligator gar has a short, broad snout; a longnose gar has a much longer, narrower snout. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department: How to Identify Alligator Gar Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission: Florida Gar

Freshwater fish or saltwater fish?
In the usual habitat sense, gar are best described as freshwater fish. Alligator gar are a notable exception to any claim that gar stay only in fresh water: they primarily inhabit freshwater but can also use estuaries and coastal waters. “Salt-tolerant” and “found in coastal water” are more accurate descriptions than calling all gar saltwater fish.
