To find a reputable Pitsky breeder, verify the parents’ identities and health-screening records yourself, speak with the breeder live, see the litter and its mother when practical, and read a written contract before paying. A polished listing, badge, low price, or claim that a puppy is “health tested” is not enough. Pitsky is a cross, and the available consumer guidance does not establish a universal Pitsky-specific health-testing checklist or certify individual breeders.

What makes a Pitsky breeder worth considering?

Judge the breeder by verifiable records and day-to-day practices, not by how professional the advertisement looks. A responsible breeder should be able to explain why the litter was planned, identify both parent dogs, discuss relevant health concerns in their ancestry, and answer detailed questions. They should also ask about your household and plans for the dog.

  • Identity and access: The breeder can identify the sire and dam and arrange a live phone or video conversation. The mother should normally be with the litter; the sire may live elsewhere.
  • Transparency: You can see the puppies and where they are being raised, in person when practical or through a credible live viewing. A breeder may limit handling of very young puppies for infection control, so assess the whole process rather than treating that one restriction as proof of misconduct.
  • Records: The breeder provides actual parent screening records, veterinary information, and details of the puppy’s current care and vaccinations.
  • Mutual screening: The breeder is willing to provide references and time for you to review documents—and wants to know whether your home is suitable.
  • Accountability: The written agreement explains health responsibilities, what records you receive, and what happens if you can no longer keep the dog.

Breed-club membership, titles, buyer references, and directory listings can provide context, but none replaces checking the records and practices directly. The American Kennel Club warns that scammers can impersonate real breeders and that it does not distribute breeder badges: AKC guidance on spotting puppy scams.

How to check Pitsky parents’ health records

Because Pitsky is a cross, start by asking what each parent is and what health concerns are relevant to that parent’s ancestry. Ask what screening was performed and where the results can be verified. Do not assume a single generic “health tested” statement—or a DNA kit—establishes that a breeder is responsible. The consumer guidance available here does not provide a universal Pitsky-specific test list.

  1. Ask for each parent’s registered or identifying name and copies or details of the actual screening records.
  2. Search the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) database yourself when applicable. Match the dog’s identity and the results to what the breeder claims; screenshots and verbal assurances alone are not independent verification.
  3. Ask about health issues in the parents’ family history, the puppy’s veterinary records, and care to date.
  4. If a result cannot be found or the identity does not match, ask the breeder to explain before proceeding. OFA advises prospective owners to verify results and be cautious when they cannot be confirmed: OFA breeder tools and OFA information for dog owners.

OFA records can help verify screening; they do not certify that a breeder is ethical or guarantee a puppy’s future health.

Questions to ask before you visit or send a deposit

  • Why did you plan this litter, and what are the identities and ancestry of both parents?
  • What health concerns are relevant to each parent’s lineage, and what screening was done?
  • Where can I independently verify the results? May I review the records before making a decision?
  • Can I meet or see the puppies with their mother and view where they are being raised? If in-person visits are limited, what live viewing can you arrange?
  • What are the parents’ temperaments and living arrangements?
  • What veterinary care, vaccinations, and other records will come with the puppy?
  • Can I speak with previous buyers, and may I take time to review the contract?
  • What does the contract say about health issues, responsibilities, records, and taking the dog back if I cannot keep it?

A reasonable breeder may not allow visitors to handle very young puppies, but should be able to explain precautions and offer a credible way to assess the litter. A refusal to answer basic questions, show the specific litter live, or provide records deserves more scrutiny.

Warning signs of a puppy scam

  • Unverified identity: The seller communicates only by email, avoids live calls, or appears to be using another breeder’s identity.
  • Unexplained images: The seller cannot show the specific puppy live, or photos and listing text appear elsewhere. Reverse-image searching can help identify reused animal photos; scammers may also manipulate images. The FTC’s June 2026 pet-scam alert discusses image manipulation and deepfakes.
  • Pressure to pay: The seller rushes you to send a deposit while important claims remain unchecked, or adds last-minute shipping or handling charges.
  • Hard-to-recover payment: The seller insists on gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfer, or a payment app. The FTC identifies demanded payment by these methods as a scam warning sign in its pet-scam guidance.
  • Implausibly low price or evasive answers: Price alone does not prove fraud, but a surprisingly low offer combined with urgency, poor communication, or missing records is a reason to pause.

Before paying, search the seller or business name with “review,” “scam,” and “complaint.” Check whether contact details and images appear consistently across independent pages. A website, social account, marketplace listing, or directory presence is not proof of legitimacy; a platform can be a starting point, not a substitute for verification.

What to do before payment and pickup

  1. Verify the parents and records. Check identities and applicable OFA results independently; resolve discrepancies before proceeding.
  2. Review the contract before paying. Confirm the puppy’s identity, each party’s responsibilities, health provisions, records to be delivered, and a return-to-breeder process if you cannot keep the dog.
  3. Choose a payment method carefully. Do not use a method the seller insists on if it is difficult to reverse or recover. Do not pay while the puppy, seller, or core claims remain unverified.
  4. Keep copies. Save the listing, messages, contract, records, and payment details so you have them if a dispute or suspected fraud arises.

Sales rules, deposit rights, required disclosures, and animal-welfare laws vary by location; the consumer guidance cited here does not determine your local legal rights.

If you suspect a puppy scam

Stop sending money. Preserve the listing, messages, payment requests, and transaction details. Contact your payment provider promptly to ask whether the transaction can be stopped or recovered, then report the suspected scam to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. The FTC’s pet-scam guidance directs consumers to report suspected scams there.

How to compare breeders without relying on badges

Use the same evidence-based checks for every seller rather than picking the breeder with the strongest marketing. Compare the quality of the independently verifiable parent records, transparency about the litter and environment, willingness to answer questions and screen buyers, references, written return commitment, and payment practices. No directory, title, single test result, or badge settles the decision.
