Ask the shelter for the dog’s specific history with children, the context behind any behavior they have observed, and any health or comfort concerns that could affect life with a baby. A shelter visit or behavior test cannot guarantee how a dog will respond at home. Adoption is workable only if adults can supervise every interaction and use physical separation whenever they cannot.
Questions to ask about the dog
Has the dog lived with babies or young children?
Ask what ages of children were involved and whether the information comes from a previous home, a foster placement, or shelter observations. Find out what the dog actually did around them rather than relying on a general label such as “good with kids.” The source and context matter: a shelter may have useful background, but the amount and reliability of a dog’s history vary. See the ASPCA’s dog-bite prevention guidance.

What behaviors have staff observed, and what happened around them?
Ask about fear, avoidance, freezing, growling, snapping, jumping, chasing, or difficulty settling. For each concern, ask what happened immediately before and after, whether the dog could retreat, whether it happened more than once, and what helped. A behavior without its circumstances is difficult to use when deciding whether your household is a good fit.
Has the dog guarded food, toys, resting places, or other valued items?
Ask what staff observed and how they manage it. The ASPCA notes that guarding food, toys, or chew bones can involve aggression. Keep a baby away from the dog’s food, belongings, and resting area, regardless of how the dog behaved during a shelter assessment.

How does the dog respond to noise, movement, and touch?
Ask about reactions to crying, sudden sounds, fast movement, being approached while resting, and handling. Babies can be noisy and unpredictable, and a dog unfamiliar with children may find them confusing or frightening. Ask about observations already made; do not ask staff to frighten the dog or stage rough handling. The dog should be able to move away.
Are there health or comfort issues to account for?
Ask about known pain, injuries, chronic conditions, age-related limitations, hearing or vision problems, and medication. The ASPCA cautions that older, injured, or sensory-impaired dogs may struggle with the unpredictability of children; where relevant, a veterinarian can assess health concerns that may affect comfort.

What skills does the dog know, and what should we practice?
Ask whether the dog can settle, wait, come when called, leave items, greet politely, and move away on cue. The ASPCA identifies these as useful skills around a baby and suggests group obedience classes or private training as possible support.

Treat shelter observations as information for making a better-informed match, not as a safety certificate. In its position statement on shelter dog behavior assessments, the ASPCA says that food aggression observed in an assessment does not predict behavior in the adoptive home, and that a dog’s response to a lifelike doll may not reflect how it would behave with a child. Ask about the dog’s history and behavior in context; passing a test does not establish that a dog is safe with an infant.

A calm, brief meeting with an adult also cannot recreate a baby’s sounds, movement, or changing household routines. The ASPCA describes babies as potentially unfamiliar or upsetting to dogs and recommends calm, gradual introductions that are not forced and build positive associations.
Decide whether your household can manage the match
There is no single breed, size, or shelter test that settles this decision. Compare candidates using the quality and source of their history with children; observed responses to noise, movement, handling, and valued items; known health or pain concerns; and the dog’s ability to settle and move away. Then consider whether your household can provide supervision, separation, exercise, training, and time for adjustment. This is a practical way to weigh fit, not a validated scoring system.

Set up supervision and separation from day one
Never leave a baby or young child alone with a dog, even if the dog has seemed gentle. The American Veterinary Medical Association’s dog-bite prevention guidance states, “Never leave a baby or small child alone with a dog.” An adult must actively supervise interactions and prevent access whenever they cannot do so.

A crate is appropriate only if the dog is comfortable with it and it is used as a positive resting space. Barriers help manage access; they do not make unsupervised contact safe. The ASPCA’s adoption tips recommend giving a new pet space and time to adjust and suggest gates to limit access.

Ask what support and policies the shelter offers
Find out whom to contact if behavior questions arise, whether the shelter recommends training resources, and what its return or foster-to-adopt policy actually says. Policies vary by organization, so get the specific terms from that shelter instead of assuming there is a universal trial period.

Let the dog adjust at its own pace. Keep early baby-dog interactions brief and calm, and do not force the dog to approach or interact. Allow it to come voluntarily; if it seems nervous, give it space and seek individualized advice from a veterinarian or qualified behavior professional. Maintain adult supervision and separation whenever direct supervision is not possible.
