Choose a breeder who welcomes questions, lets you see where the cats are raised, provides relevant health and veterinary records, explains the kitten’s preparation, and gives you clear written terms before you pay. Check the breeder, kitten, documents, and payment process together: registry membership or a reassuring website alone does not prove responsible care.
Start with the breeder’s openness and the cats’ living conditions
Before discussing a deposit, ask how the kittens are raised and whether you can see the cats’ living environment. A visit in person is useful when available; if it is not practical, ask whether the breeder can show the cats and their surroundings by video. Ask to see the kitten’s mother and, where possible, the father. If a parent is not available, ask why and what information the breeder can provide about that cat.

Pay attention to how the breeder responds as well as what they show. A responsible breeder should be able to discuss the breed, the individual kitten, its care, and the questions you raise without treating reasonable checks as an inconvenience. Be cautious if the seller will not explain where the cats are kept, refuses to discuss parentage or health, or will not provide any way to see the cats. These signs warrant pausing and verifying—not automatically declaring that a seller is a scammer.
Make the request specific: ask what rooms or areas the cats spend time in, how the kittens are cared for, and whether you can observe the kitten with its mother. If you are viewing by video, ask the breeder to show the kitten and its surroundings during the same conversation rather than relying only on still photos. This does not replace health records or a contract, but it helps you see whether the breeder is willing to be open about the cats.

The Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) breeder code describes commitments including a healthy environment, veterinary care, honest dealings, continued education for buyers, and treating kittens and cats responsibly. CFA’s code is a useful reference for the conduct a participating breeder says they will follow; membership or a code commitment is not, by itself, proof that a particular breeder meets every standard.
Ask for records, not just assurances
Request the sire’s and dam’s health and genetic records, along with the kitten’s veterinary, vaccination, and care information. Ask which tests are relevant to the breed, which parent or kitten was tested, and what the results mean. A general statement that a line is “healthy” does not let you verify what was checked or what the result showed.
There is no single complete health-test panel established for every breed in the buyer guidance described here. The appropriate tests depend on the breed and the claim being made. If you are unsure whether a test is relevant or how to interpret a result, check with a veterinarian or an appropriate breed authority rather than assuming that one document settles every health question.

- Parent information: health and genetic test records for the sire and dam, with an explanation of the tests and results.
- Kitten information: veterinary records, vaccination information, and details of care provided so far.
- Paperwork to be supplied later: ask whether registration, pedigree, or additional health paperwork will be provided, and when.
When you receive a document, note which cat it concerns and what it actually says. A test result for one parent does not automatically document the other parent or the kitten. If an explanation is not clear, ask the breeder to clarify the test and result in plain language, and check with a veterinarian or relevant breed authority when needed. Avoid treating a vague verbal summary as equivalent to a record.
Compare the actual records, dates, and terms—not simply whether two breeders both use the phrase “health tested.” If a breeder makes a specific health claim but cannot support it with documentation or explain it, do not treat the claim as established.
Check the kitten’s age and preparation
TICA’s Find a Cat buyer guidance says, “Most knowledgeable breeders allow their kittens to go to new homes at 12 weeks of age or older.” Treat this as TICA guidance, not as a universal legal minimum. Local rules may set different requirements, and the sources covered here do not establish one minimum age that applies everywhere.
If a seller offers a notably younger kitten, pause before committing. Ask why the kitten is being placed at that age, what veterinary care and social development have taken place, and what records support the answers. Check the applicable rules where you live rather than assuming that TICA’s age guidance is the local law.

Ask the breeder to describe the kitten’s preparation in concrete terms: what care has been provided, what veterinary information will travel with it, and what remains for you to arrange after it goes home. The goal is not to demand a particular checklist that applies to every breed or location; it is to understand the individual kitten’s history and know what records you will receive.
Read the agreement before paying
Ask for the written sale agreement early enough to read it carefully. “Health guarantee” is not a complete description of your protection: the important details are what is covered, for how long, what you must do, and what happens if a covered problem arises. Compare those terms rather than choosing a breeder based on the headline promise.
Terms to understand
- Health coverage: which conditions are covered and for what period.
- Buyer responsibilities: any required veterinary visit, notice, documentation, or other steps, including the timing.
- Remedies: what the breeder agrees to do if the agreement’s conditions are met.
- Return or rehoming: what happens if you can no longer keep the cat, and whether the breeder will help arrange a return or rehoming.
- Paperwork: which registration, pedigree, and health documents are included, and when they will be delivered.
- After-sale support: how the breeder will answer care questions after the kitten goes home.
Compare health promises by reading the coverage, duration, required veterinary steps, and available remedies side by side. Two agreements may both use the words “health guarantee” while setting out different responsibilities and outcomes. If an important term is missing, unclear, or only explained verbally, ask for it to be clarified in writing before you sign or pay.

Also check that the agreement identifies the kitten and the parties to the sale clearly enough for you to understand what it covers. Keep a copy of the signed agreement and the records the breeder gives you. These practical steps make it easier to follow the stated requirements and to refer back to what was agreed if you have questions later.
Do not rely on a verbal explanation if the written terms say something different or leave an important point unclear. Ask for clarification before signing or paying, and make sure the agreement states any required timing and consequences clearly.
Compare breeders using the same criteria
There is no universal scoring system that establishes which breeder is best. A consistent comparison helps you notice gaps without letting a polished website, registry listing, or one appealing answer outweigh the rest of the evidence.
| What to compare | What to look for | Questions that reveal gaps |
|---|---|---|
| Access and transparency | Openness about where cats are raised; a chance to see the cats and, where possible, their parents in person or by video. | Can I see the kitten’s living environment? If a parent is unavailable, why? |
| Health documentation | Parent health and genetic records plus the kitten’s veterinary, vaccination, and care information. | Which breed-relevant tests were done, on which cats, and what do the results mean? |
| Age and preparation | A clear explanation of the kitten’s age, care, and development before placement. | Why is this kitten ready to leave now, and what records support that account? |
| Written terms | Understandable health coverage, buyer responsibilities, return or rehoming terms, and paperwork commitments. | What is covered, for how long, and what must I do to meet the agreement? |
| Communication and support | Detailed answers before sale and a clear way to ask questions after the kitten goes home. | Who should I contact after placement, and how will questions be handled? |
| Transaction safety | A specific kitten, clear identity and terms, and no pressure to send an unsafe or premature payment. | Why is payment due now, and can I verify the seller and kitten first? |
For each candidate, note what you have actually seen, what documents you have received, and what remains unanswered. A gap is a reason to ask for clarification or wait; you do not need to turn the comparison into a numerical rating.

A practical order for your checks
- Ask about the cats and the setting. Find out how the kittens are raised and request to see the living environment and parents where possible.
- Request the records. Review parent health and genetic information and the kitten’s veterinary, vaccination, and care records. Ask what each document means.
- Discuss age and preparation. Confirm the kitten’s age, ask about its care and development, and check local requirements if its age raises questions.
- Read the agreement. Compare coverage, timing, responsibilities, return terms, paperwork, and remedies before making a commitment.
- Verify the transaction. Check that the seller’s identity and cattery information are consistent, that the kitten is specifically identified, and that you are not being pushed into unsafe payment.
- Plan the veterinary visit. Check the agreement’s timing and arrange your own veterinarian’s examination promptly after the kitten comes home.
Use the same order for each breeder you are considering. That makes it easier to tell the difference between a real, documented answer and a reassuring phrase that has not been backed up. You can keep a simple list of questions and write down the breeder’s answers, the documents received, and any follow-up needed; no formal rating system is required.

Protect yourself during the transaction
Verify that the seller’s name, cattery information, online presence, and answers are consistent. Do not let urgency or a kitten photo replace direct verification. TICA’s buyer guidance flags sellers who communicate only by text or email, demand full payment before you have selected a specific kitten, or request payment by wire transfer or gift card.
Do not send money simply because a seller says a kitten will otherwise disappear. First establish which kitten is being offered, verify the seller’s identity and information, review the agreement, and understand the payment terms. If the seller will not allow reasonable checks or pressures you to pay before you can make an informed choice, pause rather than letting a deadline decide for you.
Keep the sequence clear: identify the kitten, verify the breeder, understand the written terms, and then consider payment. A seller’s request for immediate full payment before you have selected a specific kitten is a reason to stop and ask questions. A request for a wire transfer or gift card is a warning sign; do not treat it as a routine step just because the seller says it is necessary.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Communication channel alone does not establish whether a seller is legitimate, but a seller who will communicate only by text or email gives you fewer opportunities to ask questions and verify details directly. Consider that alongside the other evidence: access to the cats, records, consistency of identity, written terms, and payment pressure. Do not let a strong showing in one area erase an unresolved problem in another.
Arrange your own veterinary examination
Plan for a prompt examination by your own veterinarian after the kitten comes home. TICA’s breeder-code excerpt asks participating breeders to encourage an examination within a few days. That is code guidance, not a general legal rule. Check the sale agreement for the required timing and what happens if you miss it, then arrange the appointment accordingly.
Bring the kitten’s records and the agreement to the appointment so your veterinarian can review the documented care and advise you on next steps. A buyer’s examination complements—not replaces—the parent and kitten records you review before purchase.
Do not wait to read the agreement until after the appointment window has passed. If it requires a visit or notification by a particular time, understand that requirement before bringing the kitten home and schedule accordingly. Keep any veterinary paperwork you receive with the breeder’s documents so you can refer to the kitten’s history later.
Red flags that should make you pause
A single warning sign does not prove that a seller is dishonest. It does mean you should ask for a clear explanation, verify the relevant information, and be prepared to walk away if the answer or evidence is not adequate.

- The seller refuses to answer reasonable questions about health, parentage, care, or where the cats are kept.
- Health or genetic claims are not supported by records, or parent information is withheld without a credible explanation.
- You are pressured to make an immediate full payment before selecting a specific kitten.
- The seller requests a wire transfer or gift card.
- A notably young kitten is offered without a credible explanation, clear records, or consideration of local rules.
- There are no clear written terms for health coverage and returns or rehoming.
- The seller’s identity or cattery information is inconsistent, or you cannot verify the seller beyond text or email contact.
Consider the pattern across the whole transaction. A seller who answers one question well but refuses records or pushes unsafe payment has not resolved those other concerns. Likewise, one missing detail is a prompt to investigate, not enough by itself to label a breeder a scammer.
There is a difference between a detail that needs clarification and a pattern that makes it unsafe to proceed. For example, a parent may not be available to view, but the breeder should be willing to explain why and provide relevant information. By contrast, refusal to explain parentage combined with unsupported health claims leaves important questions unresolved. Keep asking for evidence, and do not commit just to avoid disappointing the seller.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Account for local rules and breed-specific needs
Requirements for kitten age, breeder licensing, or registration vary by location. The UK government’s kitten-buyer guidance recommends checking the seller and using a kitten checklist or contract; that is UK-specific advice, not a statement of law elsewhere. Check local authorities for rules that apply where the kitten is bred and where you will take it home.
Breed-related health testing also needs breed-specific advice. General buyer guidance does not supply a complete testing list for every breed. Ask a veterinarian or relevant breed authority which checks matter for the breed and how to interpret the records a breeder provides.
If a breeder mentions a license, registration, or other official status, ask what it means and how you can verify it where you live. Do not assume that a requirement in one country or region applies to another. If the kitten will cross a jurisdictional boundary, check the rules that apply to the places involved rather than relying on a seller’s general assurance.
Use registry membership as one check, not the verdict
Registry membership can help you verify information or understand a breeder’s stated commitments, but it is not proof on its own that the cats receive responsible care. CFA’s code is a first-person commitment by participating breeders; TICA provides buyer guidance that includes the age recommendation and breeder-code guidance. Use such material alongside your own checks of living conditions, records, contract terms, communication, and payment—not instead of them.
CFA’s code includes the statement, “I will deal honestly with the purchasers of my kittens and cats.” It is a breeder’s code commitment, not a guarantee about any individual transaction. The useful test remains whether the breeder’s conduct and documents support what they tell you.

How can I tell if a kitten breeder is legitimate?
Look at the full picture rather than relying on a website or registry listing. A breeder should be willing to discuss the cats and their care, show the cats or explain why that is not possible, provide relevant records, and offer clear written terms. Verify that the seller’s identity and cattery information are consistent, and do not pay under pressure before you have selected a specific kitten and reviewed the agreement.
How old should a kitten be before going to a new home?
TICA’s Find a Cat guidance says most knowledgeable breeders allow kittens to go to new homes at 12 weeks of age or older. This is TICA guidance, not a universal legal minimum. Local rules may differ, so check the requirements where you live. If a seller offers a notably younger kitten, ask why, what care and social development have taken place, and what records support the answers.
What health records should a cat breeder provide?
Ask for health and genetic records for the sire and dam, plus the kitten’s veterinary, vaccination, and care information. Ask which tests are relevant to the breed, which cats were tested, and what the results mean. There is no single complete test panel established for every breed in the buyer guidance here, so consult a veterinarian or relevant breed authority about breed-specific questions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat should a kitten sale contract include?
Understand what health conditions are covered and for how long, what veterinary or notice steps you must take, and what the breeder will do if the agreement’s conditions are met. Check the return or rehoming terms, paperwork to be supplied and when, and how to contact the breeder after the kitten goes home. Ask for unclear points to be clarified in writing before signing or paying.
What payment requests are red flags when buying a kitten?
TICA’s buyer guidance flags demands for full payment before you have selected a specific kitten and requests for payment by wire transfer or gift card. Pause if the seller pressures you to pay immediately, will not let you verify the kitten and breeder, or will not provide clear written terms. Do not let urgency substitute for checks.
Should I take a new kitten to my own veterinarian?
Yes. Arrange a prompt examination and check the sale agreement for any required timing and consequences. TICA’s breeder-code excerpt asks participating breeders to encourage an examination within a few days; that is code guidance, not a general legal rule. Bring the kitten’s records and agreement to the appointment.
The Bottom Line
Before committing, see how the cats are raised, request parent and kitten records, understand the kitten’s age and preparation, and read the written health and return terms. Verify the seller and payment process, avoid pressure to pay before selecting a kitten, and plan a prompt visit with your own veterinarian. Use CFA and TICA guidance as useful checks—not as a substitute for your own review or local rules.
