If your pet has new bad breath, excessive drooling, abnormal chewing, is dropping food, eating less, or struggling to eat, contact a veterinarian promptly for advice. Dental or oral pain is a common possibility, but these signs can also have other causes and do not identify a diagnosis. Seek emergency veterinary help for breathing difficulty or suspected toxin or caustic exposure.
First, decide whether this is an emergency
Call an emergency veterinary hospital now if your pet is having difficulty breathing or may have swallowed or contacted a toxic or caustic substance. Do not wait to see whether bad breath or drooling improves when either of those concerns is present. Cornell’s guidance on small-animal toxins and the AVMA’s 2023 pet first-aid guide address urgent exposure and first-aid concerns.

If you think your pet swallowed a foreign object, seek urgent veterinary advice, particularly if vomiting, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, dehydration, or lethargy follows. A gastrointestinal obstruction can be an emergency and may require surgery, according to Cornell’s guidance on foreign-body obstruction in dogs. The precise risk depends on the situation; do not assume that a pet is safe because the object is no longer visible.

For other new oral symptoms, call your pet’s veterinarian promptly and describe what you have noticed. There is no single time limit that fits every combination of symptoms and severity. A pet that is still eating and breathing normally may receive different advice from one that is refusing food, becoming weak, or deteriorating. The clinic can help determine whether your pet needs an urgent examination or another appointment based on the details you give them.

Do not force a mouth check
A pet with oral pain may bite. The AVMA advises against putting your fingers into a painful animal’s mouth; do not pry the jaws open to look for a tooth, wound, or object. Even a normally gentle dog or cat can react suddenly when a sore area is touched. If you can see something without handling your pet, describe it to the veterinary team, but leave examination and removal to them.
What bad breath, drooling, and eating changes can mean
These signs are reasons to seek veterinary assessment, not a way to diagnose the cause at home. Dental disease is a leading possibility, but drooling and trouble eating can also accompany an injury, an object in the mouth, a growth, caustic exposure, nausea, gastrointestinal problems, or illness elsewhere in the body. A veterinarian will consider the whole picture rather than treating the symptom as proof of a dental problem.
Dental disease and oral pain
Bad breath, excessive drooling, and difficulty eating are among the signs Cornell lists for dental disease. In dogs, plaque can harden into tartar; gum inflammation may follow, and more advanced disease can damage the bone and tissues supporting the teeth. A pet may also chew abnormally, drop food, eat less, or refuse food when eating is uncomfortable. Some animals continue to eat despite significant mouth disease, so an apparently normal appetite does not rule out a problem. These observations do not reveal how far disease has progressed or which treatment is needed.
The frequency of dental disease in dogs is one reason not to dismiss a change in eating or breath. VCA states that more than 80% of dogs over age three have active dental disease in its overview of dental disease in dogs. That figure refers to that age group of dogs; it does not apply to cats, diagnose an individual pet, or measure the emergency risk of this symptom combination.
Drooling has causes beyond dental disease
Drooling may occur with a foreign material in the mouth, a dental problem, injury, or growth. VCA also lists caustic agents, nausea, and gastrointestinal problems among possible causes in its guide to dealing with drooling. Note whether the saliva is new, continuous, unusually thick, or mixed with blood, but do not try to wipe deeply inside the mouth or pull at a suspected object. Because the same sign can arise from different problems, treatment depends on what the veterinary assessment finds.

Bad breath can signal illness beyond the mouth
Dental disease is a common explanation for bad breath in cats, but it is not the only one. Cornell’s Feline Health Center lists kidney, respiratory, or liver disease and diabetes among possible associated conditions, as well as oral trauma, ulcers, sores, and cancer. Its guidance quotes veterinary dentist Eric Davis, DVM: “A healthy cat’s breath should not be offensive.” A new or persistent odor should therefore be discussed with a veterinarian rather than covered up with a product. The character of an odor may be worth reporting, but it cannot identify a disease on its own.
Eating behavior provides useful clues
Tell the clinic whether your pet approaches food and then backs away, chews on one side, drops kibble, paws at the mouth, swallows without chewing, or refuses both food and treats. Also report whether water intake, urination, activity, or body condition has changed. These details can help distinguish a painful chewing problem from nausea or a broader illness, but they do not replace an examination. Do not assume that switching to canned food, soaking kibble, or offering treats has solved the underlying issue; a pet may manage a softer texture while a painful or dangerous condition remains.
What to tell the veterinary team
When you call, describe the signs in plain terms: when you first noticed them, whether they are changing, and whether your pet is eating less, refusing food, chewing differently, or dropping food. Mention any possible exposure to a caustic substance or suspected swallowed object, and report vomiting, abdominal pain, dehydration, lethargy, or breathing difficulty. Tell the veterinarian your pet’s species, age, existing conditions, and medications if relevant. These details help the clinic judge urgency; they do not replace an examination.
If possible, note when your pet last ate and drank and whether urination and bowel movements have been normal. A short video of abnormal chewing or drooling, recorded without disturbing the animal, may help the veterinary team understand what you observed. Do not delay an emergency call to collect a perfect history, however.
Do not try to make a painful pet eat, brush its teeth, or accept an oral rinse or chew while you are waiting for advice. Human toothpaste and household mouth products are not appropriate substitutes for veterinary guidance. Soft food or a dental product cannot establish or resolve the cause of unexplained active symptoms. If you are unsure whether a sign is serious, call and ask rather than attempting to inspect a sore mouth yourself.

What a veterinary examination may involve
The veterinarian will take a history and examine your pet, including an assessment of the mouth. A surface look at visible teeth may not be enough to establish the cause or extent of dental disease. Cornell’s Dentistry and Oral Surgery service explains that a definitive dental diagnosis and treatment plan can require general anesthesia so the team can perform dental probing, charting, and full-mouth radiographs. An anesthetized assessment allows evaluation below the gumline and of areas that cannot be safely or completely examined in an awake, painful animal.

The recommended next steps depend on the diagnosis. Possible dental treatments include professional cleaning, periodontal treatment, root canal therapy, extraction, or repair. These are not interchangeable options: the veterinarian uses examination findings and, when indicated, diagnostic imaging to determine what is appropriate. Ask the clinic to explain which finding supports each recommendation and what follow-up care will be needed.
If drooling has no clear cause, additional tests may be suggested. VCA notes that these can include blood tests, radiographs, or other testing. Such tests may look for problems outside the mouth or help locate a foreign material or other abnormality. That does not mean every pet with drooling needs every test; the veterinarian decides whether further investigation is warranted based on the history and examination.
Prevent dental disease after current symptoms are assessed
Tooth brushing is Cornell’s most effective home-care method for preventing dental disease in dogs. Use a toothbrush and toothpaste made for pets, and treat brushing as routine prevention—not as a response to unexplained bad breath, drooling, or difficulty eating. Have a veterinarian assess active symptoms first and confirm that brushing is appropriate for your pet. Begin gently and follow the clinic’s instructions; forcing a brush into a painful mouth can cause a bite and make future handling harder.
Other options Cornell identifies for dental home care include dental diets, chews, treats, water additives, gels, and sprays. They differ in how they are given and how easily an individual animal accepts them. These are preventive aids, not substitutes for an examination when symptoms are already present. Suitability varies by animal and product; ask your veterinarian which options fit your pet, whether chewing is safe, and how to use them safely.

If you are comparing dental products for prevention, Cornell identifies the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) as an independent organization that awards a registered seal to products intended to retard plaque and tartar. The seal can help you assess a product’s dental purpose, but it does not mean a product will treat pain, infection, an oral foreign body, or systemic illness. Check that the product is intended for your species and size, and follow your veterinarian’s advice about when home care can begin.
AVMA recommends veterinary dental checks and evaluation sooner when warning signs occur. Keep routine prevention separate from symptom care: brushing and dental products are not a reason to postpone veterinary advice about a new change in breath, saliva, chewing, or appetite.

Is bad breath by itself always a dental emergency?
Not necessarily, but new or persistent bad breath deserves a veterinary discussion, especially if it occurs with drooling, abnormal chewing, reduced appetite, or food dropping. Dental disease is common, yet cats can also have kidney, respiratory, liver, diabetic, traumatic, ulcerative, or other disease associated with odor.
Should I wait a few days to see if drooling stops?
There is no universal waiting period. Contact your veterinarian promptly for individualized triage. Seek emergency care immediately for breathing difficulty, suspected toxin or caustic exposure, or concerning vomiting, abdominal pain, dehydration, lethargy, or appetite loss after a possible swallowed object.

No. A painful animal may bite, and pulling can worsen injury or leave material behind. Do not put fingers into the mouth or force the jaws open. Call a veterinary hospital and follow its instructions.

Will soft food or a dental chew fix the problem?
No. A softer texture may temporarily make eating easier, but it does not diagnose or treat dental infection, an oral foreign body, injury, caustic damage, nausea, or systemic illness. Do not offer a chew to a pet that is painful or struggling to eat unless the veterinarian says it is safe.
Does an awake visual check rule out serious dental disease?
No. Cornell notes that definitive diagnosis and planning may require anesthesia, probing, charting, and full-mouth radiographs. Disease below the gumline or in hidden areas may not be visible during a brief look at the front teeth.
When can I start brushing?
After the veterinarian has assessed the current signs and confirms brushing is appropriate. Pet-specific toothpaste and a suitable brush are for prevention. They should not be used to postpone care for unexplained breath, drooling, pain, or eating changes.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if my pet is still eating but has foul breath and drools?
Contact the veterinarian promptly. Continued eating does not rule out painful dental disease or another oral, gastrointestinal, toxic, or systemic problem.
Are dental treats safer than brushing?
They are different preventive options, not interchangeable treatments. Ask your veterinarian which method and product suit your pet; a VOHC seal indicates a product’s plaque- or tartar-control purpose, not treatment of active disease.
Could a swallowed object cause mouth symptoms?
Yes. A foreign material may cause drooling or oral pain, and a swallowed object can lead to gastrointestinal obstruction. Urgent advice is warranted, especially with vomiting, appetite loss, abdominal pain, dehydration, or lethargy.
The Bottom Line
New bad breath, excessive drooling, abnormal chewing, dropped food, or trouble eating warrants veterinary advice. Treat breathing trouble, suspected toxin or caustic exposure, and concerning signs after a swallowed object as emergencies. Do not force a mouth inspection or rely on soft food, rinses, chews, or brushing to explain active symptoms. Once your veterinarian has diagnosed and addressed the problem, brushing and other suitable preventive products can help protect oral health.
