To fish for California golden trout, start with dry flies or terrestrial patterns; the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) says these trout readily take many kinds of flies, and small lures may also work. The bigger decisions are which golden trout you mean, how much access the water requires, and what rules apply to that exact stream or lake. California golden trout, stocked fish outside their native range, and the distinct Little Kern golden trout are not interchangeable destinations.
First, identify the fish and the water
California golden trout (Oncorhynchus aguabonita) are native to Golden Trout Creek and the South Fork Kern River in Tulare County. CDFW also reports that they have been stocked in high-elevation lakes and streams elsewhere in the Sierra Nevada, so a fish called a golden trout outside those native waters may be part of a stocked population.

Little Kern golden trout are a distinct native fish, found in the Little Kern River and its tributaries. CDFW describes them as similar in appearance to California golden trout, but generally darker and more subdued, with heavier spotting that often extends below the lateral line. The Little Kern drainage is almost entirely within Golden Trout Wilderness.

What flies and lures should you try?

CDFW says the fish readily take flies of many types, particularly dries and terrestrials. Small lures may also be effective. The agency’s guidance does not prescribe a particular fly pattern, lure size, rod, or line weight, so choose equipment to suit the water and your own approach rather than treating one setup as an official recommendation. On a small stream, the main adjustment may be the cast, not a different fly. Meadow and riparian vegetation often crowds tributaries, leaving little room for a long, open cast. Look for a practical lane and make a controlled presentation that fits it instead of assuming you can cast freely across the water.
How to approach Little Kern golden trout
CDFW gives more specific presentation advice for Little Kern golden trout, so keep these tactics tied to that fish and drainage. In smaller tributaries, particularly meadow streams, move quietly: crouch where useful and use vegetation for cover rather than walking directly into the fish’s view. Willows may make a normal back cast impractical. CDFW describes several alternatives:
- Dapping: Present the fly with minimal conventional casting room, keeping the approach compact.
- Releasing slack downstream: Let leader or line drift downstream beneath overhanging brush to place the fly in a tight opening.
- Steeple cast: Use a more vertical casting path where brush limits a horizontal back cast.
- Bow-and-arrow cast: Use a short, controlled cast when there is too little room for a regular cast.
These are options for dense, willow-lined Little Kern water, not blanket instructions for every California golden trout stream.

Plan for the access, not just the fishing
Some South Fork Kern areas near Kennedy, Troy, and Monache meadows are close to forest roads. By contrast, many Kern Plateau waters lie within Golden Trout Wilderness and are reached by trail. A road-adjacent starting point should not be taken to mean that every nearby reach is easy to reach or has the same rules.
The Little Kern watershed is chiefly a backcountry trip. Established trails reach much of the basin, but high elevation, steep ground, and long hiking distances make travel demanding. A couple of roadside streams have shorter approaches. CDFW also notes that local outfitters provide mule or horse pack-in services; confirm availability and trip details directly before relying on one.

Check the exact water’s current fishing rules
Do not infer an open season, tackle allowance, or bag limit from a general statement about a region. CDFW says Kern Plateau waters are open to angling, but the applicable season and other rules still need to be checked for the particular stream or lake. Regulations can change, and CDFW’s portal warns that booklets may be revised during the year.
- Find the named stream or lake in the current California Freshwater Sport Fishing Regulations and confirm the entry that applies to that water.
- Check CDFW’s fishing regulations portal for current updates and use its interactive map to locate the water if needed.
- Before the trip, review CDFW’s Inland Sport Fishing page for links to license and regulation resources and invasive-species prevention information.
The relevant CDFW regulations were identified as the 2026 booklet and portal; no specific season, limit, or tackle rule should be assumed here without checking the current entry for your destination.

Fish with the conservation picture in mind
California golden trout face threats from non-native trout and the effects of long-term, historically intensive grazing. CDFW describes conservation work that has included barriers, removal of non-native fish, grazing changes, fencing, habitat improvements, and continued population and habitat monitoring. The species is currently a California State Species of Special Concern.
Genetic introgression with rainbow trout varies by location and generally increases downstream through the South Fork Kern watershed. CDFW reports the highest genetic integrity in Mulkey Creek and in Golden Trout Creek and its tributaries. That variation is one reason not to assume that every fish called a golden trout—especially one in a stocked water—is genetically identical or faces the same local conservation conditions.
