How to Foster a Cat: A Practical Guide for New Caregivers

Fostering a cat starts with the right rescue match. Learn what to ask, how to prepare a separate room, which supplies may be provided, how care differs by age, and what to do when health or behavior problems arise.

To foster a cat, start by contacting a local shelter or rescue, describe your schedule and household honestly, and accept only a placement whose care you can provide safely. Before the cat arrives, get the organization’s written instructions for food, isolation, supplies, veterinary appointments, medication, transport and emergencies. “Fostering a cat” can mean caring for a healthy adult for a few weeks, feeding a neonatal kitten every few hours overnight, or managing treatment for an ill or injured animal. Those are very different commitments.

This guide explains how to choose the right placement, prepare a separate room, care for the cat each day, protect resident pets, recognize urgent problems and hand the cat back for adoption or continued rescue care.

What cat fostering involves

A foster home provides temporary care while a shelter or rescue arranges adoption, recovery or another placement. The organization remains responsible for the cat’s case plan, but you provide the daily environment and observations that a shelter kennel may not be able to offer.

The rescue should tell you the expected duration, feeding plan, medical status, behavior goals and handoff process before you agree. A placement may last days, several weeks or longer. It may end when the cat is adopted, returns to the shelter for an adoption event, completes medical treatment or moves to a different foster home.

There is no universal foster application, minimum commitment, reimbursement policy or eligibility rule. Local organizations set their own requirements, so use their application and ask for the current rules rather than relying on advice from another program.

Begin with the organization, not a shopping list

Contact a municipal shelter, humane society or independent rescue and ask how its foster program works. Request the current contact pathway, supply list, veterinary process and after-hours emergency instructions before accepting an animal. Do not bring home a cat informally and then try to find support later; a rescue needs to know where the animal is and how to authorize care.

Describe your household accurately

Tell the coordinator whether you have cats, dogs, children, roommates, allergies, stairs, a balcony or other constraints. Include your work hours, travel plans, ability to give medication, access to transportation and whether you can handle overnight care. A candid description helps the coordinator select a safe match and prevents a placement from failing because the workload was underestimated.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a placement that fits your time and skills

Ask which type of foster is needed and compare the actual care schedule rather than choosing by appearance. The categories below reflect the kinds of care described in Humane Society Silicon Valley’s feline foster guidance; another organization may use different names or combine categories.

Placement Typical work Questions before accepting
Neonatal kittens, about 1–5 weeks Bottle-feeding formula every 2–4 hours, including overnight, keeping kittens warm and stimulating urination and defecation. Can you reliably wake for overnight feeds? Who covers a missed feed, and what weight or feeding records are required?
Weaned or younger kittens Frequent meals, secure containment, cleaning, socialization, play and close observation. Do you have a kitten-safe enclosure or room, and how much time can you spend handling and supervising them?
Mother and litter Keeping the family together, monitoring nursing and growth, changing bedding and watching the mother for illness. How will weights, feeding and veterinary checks be recorded, and what happens if the mother rejects a kitten?
Healthy adult cat A quiet safe room, meals, litter care, enrichment, behavior notes and transport to appointments or adoption events. What temperament is known, how long is the expected stay and what adoption-readiness work is wanted?
Cat recovering from illness or injury Prescribed medication, restricted activity or wound care, symptom monitoring and veterinary follow-up. Who demonstrates each treatment, how are costs authorized and who is available if symptoms change?

If the schedule, cleaning, handling or transport requirements do not fit your life, decline that placement and ask about a lower-intensity one. Saying no before the cat arrives is safer than accepting and discovering that you cannot complete essential care.

Questions to ask the shelter or rescue

Keep the answers in writing, including the name and number of the person who is responsible for your case. Ask:

  • What age, sex, medical history and behavior information is known?
  • Is the cat healthy, recovering, contagious or awaiting a veterinary assessment?
  • What is the expected start date, end date and likely daily schedule?
  • What food, formula, litter, equipment and medications will be supplied or lent?
  • Which food quantity and feeding frequency should I use, and may I change it?
  • Who schedules veterinary visits, provides transport and authorizes emergency care?
  • What is the daytime contact, and who answers after hours?
  • What should I do if the cat escapes, bites or scratches someone, refuses food or has a medical change?
  • What are the rules for children, visitors, resident pets, isolation and photographs or adoption inquiries?
  • How should I record appetite, weight, elimination, medication and behavior?
  • Where and when will the cat go for adoption, return or transfer?

Ask specifically whether veterinary emergency visits require approval. Humane Society Silicon Valley, for example, describes an approval route for emergency visits; its local phone and web details are not a substitute for your own rescue’s instructions.

Prepare a separate, secure room

Set up the room before pickup. A door that closes is safer than a gate, especially for a frightened cat or an escape-prone kitten. Keep the room quiet and limit visitors during the first days.

Room checklist

  • Food and water bowls placed away from the litter area.
  • An accessible litter box and litter approved by the rescue.
  • A bed, blanket or covered resting place where the cat can hide.
  • Age-appropriate toys and a stable scratching surface.
  • A carrier ready for transport, unless the organization lends one.
  • Secure windows and screens; remove access to balconies.
  • Hidden or secured electrical cords, strings, rubber bands and small objects.
  • Locked medicines, cleaners and other chemicals.
  • No lilies or other plants known to be toxic to cats.

American Animal Hospital Association recommends multiple scratching surfaces because cats differ in material and location preferences. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine advises observing whether a cat prefers vertical or horizontal scratching and choosing accordingly.

Quarantine is a health measure

Keep the foster physically separated from resident animals for the period specified by the rescue. Humane Society Silicon Valley’s public guide calls for two weeks of separation. Cornell recommends separating a newcomer with an unknown health history until a veterinarian assesses the cat. These are program- and situation-specific precautions, not a universal calendar rule.

Do not begin introductions merely because two weeks have passed. Wait until the foster organization or veterinary team says the cat can meet resident animals, and continue isolation longer if illness testing or treatment requires it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Get supplies through the foster program first

Ask for the current written supply list before buying anything. Humane Society Silicon Valley says its kitten program provides or lends many basics, including neonatal formula and bottles, towels and blankets, a litter box and litter, a carrier, kitten food and toys, although availability can depend on donations. Another rescue may provide more, less or different items.

Item Why it matters How to decide what to obtain
Carrier Safe transport to pickup, veterinary appointments and adoption events; a familiar carrier can reduce travel stress. Ask whether one is lent. If you need to obtain one, choose a sturdy, well-ventilated model large enough for the cat to stand and turn around.
Litter box and litter Reliable elimination and easier monitoring of urine and stool. Use the rescue’s preferred litter. AAHA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention generally advise one box per cat plus one extra in a household, but a foster room may have a different setup directed by the organization.
Food or formula Consistent nutrition and fewer stomach upsets during a stressful move. Use the supplied food and feeding plan. Do not substitute formula, milk or a new diet without approval.
Scratching surface and toys Enrichment, exercise and an outlet for normal scratching and play. Provide stable options suited to the cat’s observed preference and remove strings or parts that can be swallowed.
Medication equipment Accurate dosing and safer treatment. Use only medication prescribed or supplied for that cat, with the rescue or veterinarian’s instructions.

Do not make a standard purchase of flea or tick products, supplements or treatments. The CDC specifically advises consulting a veterinarian before applying tick-prevention products to cats. A rescue’s veterinary team should select products and doses.

Feed and care for the cat according to its life stage

Neonatal kittens

Kittens roughly 1–5 weeks old may need bottle feeding every two to four hours, including overnight. They may also need stimulation to urinate and defecate. This schedule is intensive and can affect sleep every night. Ask the rescue to demonstrate mixing, warming, positioning, burping, weighing and cleaning bottles before you take the kittens home.

Never improvise a feeding interval because a kitten is sleeping, and never force liquid into a weak or poorly swallowing kitten. Contact the designated foster or veterinary professional immediately if a kitten is cold, limp, repeatedly vomits, cannot latch or stops gaining weight.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Weaned kittens

Follow the rescue’s meal plan and provide the food it supplies unless a veterinary professional changes the plan. Humane Society Silicon Valley’s guidance says dry food should be available at all times and wet food offered several times a day for its kitten program; that is program guidance, not a rule for every kitten or medical case.

Young kittens also need frequent litter cleaning, safe play and gentle socialization. Record eating, drinking, stool, urine, energy and any weight instruction supplied by the rescue.

Adult cats

Many adult fosters can follow a twice-daily meal schedule, but the individual plan may differ for age, weight, disease or medication. Provide a predictable routine, a hiding place, play or other enrichment and time for the cat to approach you. A fearful cat may need quiet observation rather than forced handling.

Cats on medical plans

Have every medication and treatment demonstrated. Confirm the dose, route, timing, storage, missed-dose instruction and what reaction warrants a call. Keep a written log so that two caregivers do not accidentally repeat a dose. Do not give human medication or a product prescribed for another animal.

Track health every day

Daily notes help the rescue detect deterioration and make better adoption decisions. At a minimum, record:

  • Food and water intake, including refusal of a meal.
  • Energy, posture, interaction and unusual hiding.
  • Breathing rate or effort and any coughing or open-mouth breathing.
  • Urination and stool, including diarrhea, constipation or straining.
  • Eye or nose discharge, vomiting, wounds or swelling.
  • Medication name, dose and time.
  • Weight when the rescue requests regular weighing.

The CDC lists sluggishness, diarrhea, abnormal breathing and eye or nose discharge among signs of illness in cats. AAHA advises contacting a veterinarian if a kitten stops eating or has a sudden behavior change. Straining to urinate can signal a rapidly life-threatening blockage and requires immediate veterinary attention.

Use the rescue’s emergency route rather than waiting for a routine message. If you cannot reach the listed contact and the cat appears in immediate danger, seek urgent veterinary care while continuing to notify the organization according to its policy.

Keep the room and litter area hygienic

The CDC recommends changing litter daily and washing your hands afterward. Cats can carry organisms in feces even when they look healthy. Remove urine, feces and vomit promptly, then clean and disinfect the affected area according to the product label and the rescue’s instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wash hands after handling litter, bodily fluids, food dishes or medication, and before eating. Use separate cleaning tools for the foster room if the rescue recommends them. Pregnant people, young children, older adults and anyone with a weakened immune system should ask their healthcare professional and the rescue about additional precautions.

Introduce a foster cat to resident pets slowly

During quarantine, resident cats and dogs should not share the room, litter box, bowls or bedding. Once the foster team approves introductions, use a gradual sequence:

  1. Exchange scents. Trade bedding or use separate cloths to carry scent between rooms without face-to-face contact.
  2. Maintain separate spaces. Let each animal investigate the other’s room at different times while doors remain closed.
  3. Feed on opposite sides of a closed door. Keep enough distance that both animals can eat without fear, then move bowls closer over several calm sessions.
  4. Allow controlled exploration. Let one cat explore while the other remains secured, then switch.
  5. Add a visual barrier. Use a secure screen or gate only when both animals remain relaxed.
  6. Supervise brief meetings. Keep sessions short, provide escape routes and end before either animal becomes overwhelmed.

American Humane Society advises slowing down if either cat appears stressed, fearful or nervous. Hissing, growling, swatting, persistent hiding or refusal to eat means the process is moving too quickly. Separate the animals and contact the foster team; never force them to “work it out.”

Know what to do when something goes wrong

The cat will not eat

Record when and how much the cat last ate, check for other signs and contact the rescue promptly. A kitten that stops eating needs veterinary guidance quickly. Do not change food, syringe-feed or give supplements unless instructed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The cat has diarrhea or vomits

Note the time, frequency, appearance and possible exposure, and preserve the rescue’s requested records. Call the designated contact, especially if the cat is young, weak, dehydrated or refusing food. Clean and disinfect contaminated surfaces.

Breathing looks abnormal

Open-mouth breathing, marked effort, blue or gray gums, collapse or rapidly worsening breathing is an emergency. Seek veterinary help through the rescue’s approved process immediately.

The cat strains to urinate

Straining, repeated trips to the box with little or no urine, crying or a painful abdomen can indicate a life-threatening urinary blockage. Contact the emergency veterinary route at once; do not wait for the next business day.

The cat escapes

Tell the rescue immediately, secure doors and windows, and follow its lost-animal plan. Do not chase a frightened cat into traffic or unfamiliar areas. Ask whether the organization has a microchip, trap, posters or search protocol.

Someone is bitten or scratched

Separate the animals, wash the wound thoroughly with soap and running water and contact the rescue. Seek medical advice for deep wounds, hand injuries, facial injuries, signs of infection or uncertain vaccination status. Report the incident even if the wound appears minor.

Transport and veterinary appointments

Use a secure carrier for every trip. A carrier should be sturdy, well ventilated and comfortable enough for the cat to turn around. Covering part of it with a light towel can reduce visual stimulation if the rescue approves. Never transport a loose cat in a vehicle.

Confirm who schedules appointments, who pays or authorizes them and whether you must bring records or medication. Ask for written discharge instructions and send the rescue the veterinarian’s findings promptly. Keep the cat isolated from resident animals after a visit if the rescue or veterinarian requires it.

Plan for adoption and the end of the placement

Ask at the beginning how adoption decisions are made and what role you will have. You may be asked to provide behavior notes, photographs, transport, meet-and-greets or a written handoff. Do not promise the cat to a friend, give it away or arrange treatment independently without the organization’s approval.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Foster homes often become attached. Discuss the possibility of adoption, called a foster “fail” in common shelter language, before accepting the placement if your household might keep the cat. If the cat is leaving, send all food, medication, records and observations with it so the next caregiver does not have to reconstruct its routine.

Understand the health issues that still matter in a short foster stay

Temporary care does not make preventive health irrelevant. AAHA’s kitten checklist, updated April 29, 2026, states that “Most cats (80%) will develop dental disease by age 3.” That organization-published figure is a reminder to report mouth odor, drooling, difficulty eating or visible oral pain to the rescue; it is not a reason to start dental treatment yourself. The rescue’s veterinarian decides whether an examination or treatment is appropriate.

Likewise, do not assume a cat that looks well has no contagious risk. Follow the isolation, vaccination, testing and cleaning instructions supplied for that individual animal.

A practical decision checklist

You are ready to accept a placement when you can answer yes to each applicable item:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • I know the organization’s daytime and after-hours contacts.
  • I understand the cat’s age, medical status, expected duration and daily schedule.
  • I can provide the required room, quarantine and supervision.
  • I have arranged coverage for work, travel, overnight feeds or other unavoidable absences.
  • I know which supplies are provided and which I must obtain.
  • I understand how food, formula, medication and veterinary visits are authorized.
  • I can record appetite, elimination, behavior, breathing and treatments.
  • I know the escape, bite, illness and emergency procedures.
  • Everyone in my household agrees to the rules.

If any answer is no, tell the coordinator exactly what is missing. The right foster placement is one that protects the cat, your resident animals and your ability to follow through every day.
