To foster a cat, contact a shelter or rescue, discuss what care a particular animal needs, and accept a placement only after you understand the schedule, training, supplies, veterinary support, and household rules. Fostering is temporary care in partnership with the organization placing the cat; its instructions and veterinary plan should guide that animal’s care.

What cat fostering involves

A foster caregiver provides temporary in-home care for a cat or kitten before adoption or another placement. Some cats need a calm home while they recover or adjust; others need socialization, monitoring, or more intensive care. The right placement depends on the animal’s needs and what you can reliably provide.

Needs vary substantially. The ASPCA describes general kitten fosters for kittens around four to eight weeks old who can eat independently but may need more time, socialization, or protection as they grow. Neonatal kittens may require bottle or syringe feeding around the clock. Medical placements may involve recovery care, while ringworm care can include baths and oral medication under program guidance. These are examples from ASPCA programs, not standard categories or rules that every rescue uses. ASPCA foster program and ASPCA kitten foster information

How to start fostering a cat

  1. Contact a shelter or rescue. Ask whether it has foster placements and how to apply. Explain your experience, schedule, household, and the type of care you may be able to offer.
  2. Discuss a specific placement before agreeing. Ask about the cat’s age, temperament, known health or behavior concerns, daily care, and any medication, monitoring, cleaning, or socialization expected.
  3. Confirm training and support. Find out what training is available, who to contact with routine questions or emergencies, and how veterinary care is arranged.
  4. Clarify logistics and terms. Ask what food and supplies the organization provides, whether appointments or check-ins are required, how transport works, how resident pets must be separated, and how long the placement may last.
  5. Prepare the home using the organization’s guidance. Set up an appropriate separate area and follow the rescue’s instructions for cleaning, safety, and any introductions.

Program arrangements differ. The ASPCA says its NYC program provides foster caregivers with food, equipment, supplies, and medical care. Its Los Angeles kitten program describes follow-up appointments every two to four weeks and asks caregivers to report health concerns promptly. Those details apply to the named ASPCA programs; ask your own organization what it provides and expects. ASPCA NYC foster FAQ ASPCA Los Angeles kitten foster program

How to prepare a room for a foster cat

Choose a quiet, secure area where the cat can settle and where you can manage food, water, litter, bedding, and enrichment. Make the space easy to clean, and remove hazards identified by the organization. Ask for its home-preparation and sanitation guidance rather than improvising a cleaning protocol.

If you have resident pets, ask how to keep them separate and when introductions may be appropriate. Separation instructions are program-specific: the ASPCA NYC program asks for a separate space and gradual introductions, while its Los Angeles kitten program specifies two weeks of separation. Neither instruction should be treated as a universal rule. ASPCA NYC foster FAQ ASPCA Los Angeles kitten foster program

What supplies do foster cats and kittens need?

Ask the organization what it supplies before buying anything. The ASPCA’s general cat-care checklist includes food, food and water dishes, interactive toys, a brush and comb, a safety collar and ID tag, a scratching post or pad, a litter box and litter, a carrier, and a bed or box with bedding. It is a general reference list, not a shopping mandate for foster caregivers. ASPCA general cat-care checklist

  • Food and feeding equipment: Confirm the assigned food and any feeding instructions with the organization.
  • Litter and a litter box: Ask what type to use and how often the area should be cleaned.
  • Bedding and a place to rest: Use what the rescue recommends for the cat and the room.
  • Enrichment: Ask which toys or activities are suitable for the animal’s age and needs.
  • Cat carrier: Arrange one for safe transport only if the organization says you need to provide it.

Daily care and health monitoring

Follow the care plan for the individual placement. Routine responsibilities may include feeding and providing fresh water, cleaning the litter box and assigned area, observing appetite and behavior, offering positive interaction, and updating the organization about concerns. For example, ASPCA’s Los Angeles kitten program asks caregivers to feed kittens, clean the litter box daily, keep the area clean, monitor health daily, and report concerns. If you are asked to care for an ill or recovering cat, get the organization’s instructions and veterinary contact before the placement begins. The ASPCApro foster resources cover subjects including bottle feeding, kitten age and weight, diarrhea, upper respiratory infection, and ringworm; they point to areas where a foster caregiver may need program-specific guidance, not permission to diagnose or treat independently. Socialization, resident pets, and the next step

Socialization may be part of a placement, especially for kittens or shy cats. Keep interactions low-pressure and responsive to the animal: gentle handling, play, and positive experiences can support confidence, but no fixed outcome is guaranteed. Ask the organization for behavior guidance and follow its rules for contact with resident animals.

Fostering is temporary, but its length depends on the individual animal and program. The next step may be adoption, a return to the shelter, or another placement. Ask at the start how the organization will decide when the cat is ready and how the handoff will work. The ASPCA NYC program says foster stays can last a few days, weeks, or months; that range describes its program, not a promise for every placement. ASPCA NYC foster FAQ

What to expect from the organization

Foster care is a shared responsibility: you provide the agreed day-to-day care, while the placing organization sets the plan and explains its support. In the ASPCA’s official NYC foster FAQ, the organization states: “The ASPCA covers all foster animal medical care and expenses and provides foster caregivers with the food, equipment and supplies they need to support their foster animals.” This describes the ASPCA program; confirm medical, supply, and expense arrangements with the organization placing your foster.
