Check that the food is for cats and the right life stage, confirm whether it is intended as a complete diet or only a treat or supplement, then compare feeding directions and nutrient values in context. This is a label-reading guide, not a ranking of specific foods: no product package or formula is evaluated here.
What makes a cat food suitable as a staple?
Look for a nutritional adequacy statement that says the food is complete and balanced for cats and identifies the life stage it supports. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) describes this statement as the key to meeting a pet’s nutritional needs. AAFCO likewise calls it one of the most important parts of a pet food label. The statement matters because it indicates whether the food is intended to provide a nutritionally balanced sole diet.

AAFCO publishes Cat Food Nutrient Profiles with 44 nutrient specifications. That figure describes the specifications in the profiles; it is not a count of nutrients printed on every package, nor an endorsement of any particular product. AAFCO provides model guidance and profiles, but says it does not regulate, approve, certify, endorse, or review individual pet foods or labels. Therefore, “AAFCO approved” is not a meaningful product endorsement. Read the exact adequacy statement on the package instead.

Does the food match your cat’s species and life stage?
Choose food labeled for cats, not dogs, and check which life stage or condition the adequacy statement covers. Cats have requirements that differ from dogs, including requirements for taurine and pre-formed vitamin A. A product labeled for one life stage should not be assumed suitable for another.
AAFCO recognizes statements for growth, maintenance, gestation/lactation, and all life stages. Match the label to the cat’s needs; for example, a kitten needs food labeled for growth or all life stages, while an adult cat generally needs food labeled for maintenance or all life stages. If your cat has a health condition or a veterinarian has recommended a therapeutic diet, general label guidance cannot determine whether a particular food is appropriate. AAFCO’s pet-food selection guidance explains how to consider life stage and individual needs.

Is it a complete diet, treat, or supplement?
Do not treat every edible cat product as a meal. A product with a complete-and-balanced nutritional adequacy statement is intended as a nutritionally balanced sole diet for the stated life stage. Treats, snacks, and supplements typically are not intended to serve as a pet’s sole diet. Check the package’s intended use and adequacy statement before making a product part of the daily menu.

How should you read the ingredient list?
FDA says ingredients are listed by their common or usual names in descending order by weight. This can tell you which ingredients contribute more weight to the product as formulated, but it does not by itself show whether the food is nutritionally complete, appropriate for your cat’s life stage, or superior to another food. Ingredient-list aesthetics are not a substitute for the adequacy statement and full label context.

How can you compare wet and dry cat food?
Guaranteed-analysis percentages are stated as fed, while AAFCO nutrient profiles use a dry-matter basis. Because wet and dry foods contain different amounts of water, their percentages cannot be compared fairly without accounting for moisture. FDA says canned food typically contains 75–78% moisture and dry food typically 10–12%; these are typical ranges, not specifications for every product.

- Sensitive Stomach Support: Crafted with easily-digestible ingredients and a grain-free recipe, this simplified formula helps support cats with dietary sensitivities while promoting smooth digestion

- Vet Recommended: Natural Balance crafts only the most nutritious food and treats that dogs and cats will love and parents can trust
For a meaningful comparison, use each product’s guaranteed analysis and moisture information to convert nutrient values to a dry-matter basis. In principle, divide a nutrient’s as-fed percentage by the food’s dry-matter fraction, where dry-matter fraction is 100% minus the moisture percentage. For example, if a label gives 10% moisture, the dry-matter fraction is 0.90; a 9% as-fed nutrient value corresponds to 10% on a dry-matter basis. This conversion helps compare concentration, but it does not establish that either food is complete or right for a particular cat. FDA’s complete-and-balanced pet food guidance discusses the moisture difference and dry-matter comparison.

| Label detail | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Product identity | Exact product and formula name; date the package was checked | Names and label details can vary across formulas and change over time. |
| Species and life stage | Cat; the stated stage or stages | Confirms the food is intended for cats and matches the relevant stage. |
| Nutritional adequacy | Exact statement and whether it refers to nutrient profiles or feeding tests | Distinguishes a complete diet from a product not intended to be fed as the sole diet. |
| Format and analysis | Wet or dry; guaranteed-analysis values and moisture when comparing nutrient percentages | Moisture affects as-fed percentages, so cross-format comparison requires dry-matter conversion. |
| Feeding directions | Package recommendation for the cat’s relevant weight or stage | Provides a starting point for portioning, not an individualized guarantee. |
| Price, if verified | Current price and comparable quantity for each product | Allows a like-for-like cost comparison rather than relying on package size or an outdated price. |
Do not rank foods solely by how appealing their ingredient lists look. A label-based comparison can establish what the package says; without product-specific evidence, it cannot establish how a food performs in a particular cat or resolve suitability for a medical condition.
How should you use feeding directions?
Use the package’s feeding directions as a starting point. AAFCO notes that recommendations are guidelines and may need adjustment based on a pet’s activity and condition. Monitor your cat’s body condition and response, and ask a veterinarian for guidance if you are unsure about an appropriate amount or a health-related diet.
What can veterinary nutrition resources tell you?
The World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) provides global nutrition resources with practical assessment tools and label-selection guidance for owners and veterinary teams. These resources can help structure questions about a food, but they do not certify an unnamed product or replace checking its current label. For regulatory context, consult the FDA’s pet food overview.
