To fish near Calgary, buy an Alberta sportfishing licence through AlbertaRELM or from a private licence issuer—unless you qualify for an exemption. Online purchases require a Wildlife Identification Number (WIN), an email address and a valid credit card. Before fishing, check the current regulations for the specific waterbody: a licence alone does not determine where or when you may fish.
1. Check whether you need a sportfishing licence
Alberta’s general sportfishing licence exemptions cover people under 16, Alberta residents aged 65 or older, and holders of a Certificate of Indian Status under the federal Indian Act. Exempt anglers must still follow applicable fishing regulations, including waterbody-specific rules.

Some Indigenous harvesters may qualify for a separate Domestic Fishing Licence; that pathway is not the same as the general recreational exemption or an ordinary sportfishing licence. See the section below for details.

The 2026 Alberta Guide to Sportfishing Regulations lists the following fees. The annual licence applies to the 2026–27 regulation year; verify the final checkout total because applicable tax or system charges may affect what you pay.
| Licence | Alberta resident | Non-resident Canadian | Non-resident outside Canada |
|---|---|---|---|
| Annual, age 16–64 | $30.00 | $62.00 | $87.00 |
| Annual, under 16 | No licence required | No licence required | No licence required |
| Annual, age 65 and older | No licence required | $62.00 | $87.00 |

| Seven days | Not available | $43.00 | $57.00 |
These fees are the amounts printed in Alberta’s 2026 guide. Check its definitions to confirm which residency category applies to you. 5. Check Calgary-area fishing rules before you go
The 2026 Alberta Guide to Sportfishing Regulations is effective from April 1, 2026, through March 31, 2027. Find the entry for the waterbody you plan to fish and check its open season, catch limits and any special conditions. Consult Alberta’s fishing regulations and updates for in-season changes before setting out. Rules can differ between waters, so do not assume a licence makes every location or date permissible.

Special Domestic Fishing Licence pathways
Some Indigenous harvesters may be eligible for a free annual Domestic Fishing Licence, a distinct pathway from a recreational sportfishing licence. First Nations people with the described constitutionally protected food-fishing right may obtain one through AlbertaRELM. It is valid only on eligible waters under specified conditions; fish taken under it cannot be sold, traded or bartered. Recognized Métis harvesters may obtain a free annual Domestic Fishing Licence through AlbertaRELM, the Métis Nation of Alberta or the Métis Settlements of Alberta General Council. Eligibility, waters and conditions apply. Recognized Métis harvesters without that licence, or fishing in ineligible waters, need a sportfishing licence and must comply with the rules for those waters. See Alberta’s pages for First Nations Domestic Fishing Licences and Métis Domestic Fishing Licences.
