Fish scales chiefly provide external protection. They are part of a body covering that also includes skin and mucus, and the combination helps protect the fish while remaining flexible enough for movement. Not all fish have scales, and scales do not make every fish swim faster.
What do fish scales do?
They provide external protection
Scales form a protective outer covering. Many overlap or sit within the skin, helping cover the body without making it rigid. In bony fishes, the skin and scales together can be lightweight and flexible while adding protection and robustness, as described in a review of teleost skin and scales.

Scales are not the whole protective system. Skin and mucus also meet the surrounding water and contribute to the fish’s body surface. The U.S. Geological Survey describes fish skin as a multifunctional organ with roles that include protection and locomotion (USGS, integumentary system).
They may affect water flow in some fish
Scale surfaces can influence the flow of water around a fish, but this effect depends on the species and its body covering. Shark and ray scales—also called dermal denticles—have been studied for riblet-like flow effects. A review of fossil-fish hydrodynamics also discusses how scales can influence flow and help prevent skin folding, while emphasizing that scale function varies with ecology (Proceedings of the Royal Society B).

It is not accurate to say that all scales reduce drag or make fish swim faster. A 2024 review notes that experiments have difficulty separating the effects of scales from those of mucus (Integrative and Comparative Biology). Scale-related flow effects should therefore be understood as possible and species-specific, not a universal function.
Do all fish have scales?
No. Many fish lack scales. Clingfishes, for example, have bodies protected by a thick mucus layer, according to the Australian Museum. Fish coverings also include naked skin and bony armour; some protective structures may include teeth.

These coverings are different forms of protection, not a simple ranking from best to worst. A University of Geneva summary of an evolutionary study reports an association between protective skin types and habitat choices among ray-finned fishes, including open-water and sea-floor habitats. That association does not show that a covering alone determines where a fish lives (University of Geneva, 2021).
What are the main types of fish scales?
The Australian Museum describes four broad categories. This is an introductory classification: scales vary within each group, and the categories do not imply that every scale has the same structure or function.

A 2021 University of Geneva summary reports that researchers traced protective skin structures to the common ancestor of ray-finned fishes more than 420 million years ago. The summary describes that lineage as including more than 25,000 species. These figures are the study summary’s evolutionary estimate and description of the lineage, not counts of scale types or of all fish species (University of Geneva).
