If your pet may be having an emergency and your regular veterinarian is not responding, contact a local emergency animal hospital now for urgent advice. It may triage your pet by phone or tell you to come in for an examination. Do not wait for a complaint process before arranging care.
What to do right now
- Call your regular clinic once if doing so will not delay care. State your pet’s symptoms, when they began, and that you need immediate triage. If you cannot get a timely response, move on to another veterinary contact rather than waiting through repeated calls.
- Call a local emergency animal hospital. Explain the animal’s species, symptoms, timing, medications, and any known exposure. Follow its instructions about whether to come in. If your pet is having trouble breathing, is unconscious, has severe bleeding, or is deteriorating rapidly, describe that as urgent and seek emergency veterinary care without waiting for a routine callback. These examples are not a complete list of emergencies.
- Arrange safe transport and share what you know. Bring medication details and any relevant packaging. Keep notes of when you called, whom you spoke with, and what advice you received; ask the clinic to send relevant records to the emergency hospital.
The FDA’s consumer guidance says that if you cannot reach your regular veterinarian, you have other options for urgent veterinary advice, including a local emergency animal hospital. The hospital may advise you by phone or recommend an examination: FDA: Who Do You Call if You Have a Pet Emergency?
If poisoning or a harmful exposure may be involved
Contact a veterinarian, emergency animal hospital, or animal poison-control center promptly. Have the product name or packaging, estimated amount, and time of exposure ready. Do not induce vomiting, give medication, or try a home remedy unless a veterinarian or poison-control professional tells you to.
For people in the United States, the FDA lists these poison-control services and says they are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and charge fees:

The Pet Poison Helpline also lists phone or chat access and cautions against inducing vomiting without consulting a veterinarian or the helpline: Pet Poison Helpline. AVMA’s first-aid guidance likewise advises against inducing vomiting or giving medication unless directed by a veterinarian or poison-control center: AVMA: First Aid Tips for Pet Owners.
Why first aid and a complaint cannot replace veterinary care
First aid may help while you arrange care, but it is not a substitute for an examination or treatment. AVMA puts it plainly: “First aid care is not a substitute for veterinary care, but it may save your pet’s life until you can get them veterinary care.” Avoid treatments based on guesswork; a well-intended intervention can be inappropriate for the exposure or symptoms.

How to raise a concern about the veterinarian
Once your pet is receiving care, you can decide whether to make a formal complaint. In the United States, FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine says it does not regulate veterinary practice and directs complaints about a veterinarian or questions about standard of care to the veterinary medical board in the state where the veterinarian practices. Find the appropriate state board through the FDA’s guidance: FDA: What to Do if You Have a Complaint About a Veterinarian.
Keep a factual record of the events: symptoms and timing, call attempts, names, what was said, and records or instructions you received. Board procedures vary by state, and a complaint does not guarantee a particular finding or outcome. Focus first on getting the pet assessed; the complaint route is separate from emergency treatment.

Choosing whom to call
When several options are available, prioritize whether a veterinary clinician can assess your pet promptly, whether you can reach the facility safely, and whether the hospital recommends immediate arrival or can triage by phone. If poisoning is possible, a poison-control consultation can provide exposure-specific direction; confirm its current fee directly. FDA guidance confirms that emergency hospitals may advise by phone or recommend an examination, but it does not provide a national directory, wait-time comparison, or cost comparison.
This guidance is U.S.-focused: the FDA resources and phone numbers above are U.S. resources, and complaint routing is state-specific. If you are elsewhere, contact a local emergency veterinary service or the relevant veterinary regulator in your jurisdiction.
