For dog urine on a memory foam bed, remove the bedding, blot up as much liquid as possible, then use a pet-urine enzymatic cleaner only if the bed’s care label and the cleaner’s directions allow it. Apply as little liquid as practical and let the foam dry completely before covering it again. Memory foam absorbs liquid readily, so soaking it can make the odor harder to remove.
First, identify what caused the odor
The steps below are for dog urine. Wet-dog smell, dander, vomit, and other odors may need different cleaning methods; urine treatment should not be assumed to work for every source.
How to clean dog urine from a memory foam bed

Remove bedding and blot the urine
Take off sheets and other removable bedding. Press clean, dry towels onto the affected area to absorb liquid, using fresh sections of towel as needed. Do not scrub or rub: that can spread the stain or push urine farther into the foam. Prompt blotting matters because foam can absorb liquid quickly. Check the bed’s care label
Before applying any cleaner, read the care instructions for your specific mattress or bed. Follow its spot-cleaning directions and restrictions. Advice for one mattress is not a guarantee that another foam formulation can tolerate the same product or amount of moisture.

Choose a compatible pet-urine enzyme cleaner
Sleep Foundation recommends an enzyme cleaner designed for pet messes. Check that the cleaner’s label permits use on the mattress material, follow its application and dwell-time directions, and spot-test first if the directions call for it. Sleep Foundation quotes Executive Product Director Logan Foley recommending enzyme cleaners for pet urine. No single cleaner or homemade recipe is established as suitable for every memory-foam bed.
Do not saturate the mattress. Apply only the amount allowed by the cleaner and mattress instructions. Avoid hydrogen peroxide unless the manufacturer specifically approves it: Sleep Foundation warns that it can damage foam or latex. The Casper mattress-cleaning guidance also discusses enzyme cleaners, but your own bed’s care instructions should take priority.

Let the foam dry fully
Allow airflow around the treated area and leave the bed uncovered until the foam is completely dry. Do not put sheets or a protector over damp foam. Spot treatment and thorough drying are emphasized in GhostBed’s cleaning guidance and in the mattress-care instructions.

Check for lingering odor
Once dry, smell the area. If urine odor remains, repeat only if both the bed’s care instructions and the cleaner’s label permit another application. Older or deeply absorbed urine can be difficult to remove. Available guidance does not establish a reliable success rate or a universal point at which a mattress must be replaced.

Why not use a universal vinegar or baking-soda recipe?
Cleaning recommendations differ. Some mattress instructions suggest lightly spraying vinegar and leaving baking soda overnight; GhostBed describes a vinegar-and-water method as well as enzyme cleaners. For pet urine, however, Sleep Foundation favors an enzymatic cleaner, and soaking foam is a concern because it absorbs liquid. Baking soda instructions also vary, and fine particles may lodge in porous foam. Do not treat vinegar, baking soda, or any other DIY mixture as guaranteed safe or effective for every bed.
The SPCA’s odor-removal advice supports blotting and using an enzymatic odor neutralizer according to its directions, but it addresses carpets, upholstery, and washable items—not memory-foam mattress cores. Its discussion of deeply soaked padding is a reason for caution, not a mattress-specific treatment instruction.

Choose products by label, not by brand claims
- Look for an explicit indication that the product is for pet urine.
- Confirm its directions permit use on the mattress material, including memory foam if specified.
- Follow the stated application amount, dwell time, drying directions, and safety or colorfastness precautions.
- Use an upholstery-attachment vacuum to remove dry powder residue only if your mattress instructions permit powder treatment.
No particular cleaner has been independently tested here. A product being marketed for pet odors does not establish that it is safe for every foam mattress.
Prevent the next accident from reaching the foam
After the bed is fully dry, consider a waterproof mattress protector that is compatible with the mattress. It can reduce the chance that a future accident reaches the foam, but it is prevention—not a way to clean urine already inside the bed.
