Choose a bed your dog can reach and leave without climbing, with comfortable padding, a stable base, and a washable cover. A low or recessed design may be easier for a dog with joint pain to use; a non-slip path around it can help with footing. No single firmness, thickness, or bed material is established as best for every dog, and bedding supports comfort rather than treating the cause of pain.
Prioritize easy entry and exit
For a dog that struggles to step up, a bed close to the floor or with a recessed sleeping area can reduce the need to climb over an edge. VCA’s guidance notes that climbing onto a bed may be difficult for dogs with arthritis and describes a low surface as potentially easier to access. Its home-care guidance also describes a recessed orthopedic bed that does not require climbing onto it.
Watch your dog approach the bed, turn around, lie down, and get back up. The bed should not force an awkward step or a jump, and its edges should not catch the dog’s paws. If your dog has trouble rising even from a floor-level bed, discuss the change in mobility with a veterinarian rather than assuming a different bed will solve it.
Choose comfortable padding without assuming one formula
Veterinary educational guidance from VCA lists orthopedic and memory-foam beds as options for dogs with osteoarthritis, and also recommends considering soft, padded bedding. These are comfort options, not evidence that a specific foam, firmness, or bed cures joint pain. The reviewed guidance does not establish a universally ideal firmness or thickness.

A practical choice is a bed that feels comfortably padded while remaining stable on the floor. Observe whether your dog settles, shifts position, and rises comfortably. A bed that is too soft or unstable for that individual may not be a good fit, even if it is marketed as orthopedic.
Check heat retention, fit, and cleaning
- Heat: VCA advises choosing bedding that does not retain heat, particularly in warmer climates.
- Washability: Look for a machine-washable bed or cover. This is useful if mobility limitations make getting outside difficult or accidents occur.
- Size and shape: Make sure your dog can lie in their usual resting position and turn without being squeezed by raised sides.
- Stability: Check that the bed stays put when your dog steps on or off it.
There is no standardized clinical score for comparing beds on these features, so assess how a particular dog uses the bed rather than relying on an “orthopedic” label alone.

Make the route to the bed safer
The floor around the bed matters as much as the bed itself. Cornell’s osteoarthritis guidance includes non-slip rugs and ramps among environmental measures, and VCA also recommends non-slip surfaces as mobility support. A flat rug or runner on the approach and exit path can improve traction; avoid curling edges that could trip a dog.
A ramp may help when the dog needs to reach an elevated resting spot, but it is not automatically necessary. If the destination can be moved to floor level, that may remove the climb altogether.

When to involve your veterinarian
Osteoarthritis is chronic and progressive and can cause pain, stiffness, and difficulty using an affected limb. Difficulty rising or reluctance to jump onto furniture can also be signs associated with degenerative joint disease. Contact a veterinarian if your dog develops new or worsening pain, limping, difficulty getting up, or declining mobility. A bed can be one environmental comfort measure, but it cannot diagnose joint disease or replace an individualized pain-management plan.
