You can help your dog adjust to a baby through gradual practice, positive reinforcement, predictable routines, and room to move away—but training cannot guarantee safety. Never leave a baby alone with a dog, regardless of the dog’s temperament or history. An adult must actively supervise every time they share a space; if you cannot, use a secure barrier or dog-only area.
How do you prepare your dog before the baby arrives?
Start early enough to make household changes gradually. If the dog’s sleeping arrangements, walks, or access to rooms will change, introduce the new routine before the baby arrives so several changes do not happen at once.
Practice useful cues and a protected retreat
Practice sit, down, stay, and recall so you can guide your dog without pulling or crowding it. Teach “go to place” by rewarding the dog for going to a mat or bed, gradually increasing how long it stays, and using a release cue. Keep sessions short and positive.
Set up a quiet place where the dog can rest away from household activity. This might be a familiar crate, a bed in a gated area, or a dog-only room. Use a crate only if your dog is already comfortable in it, and never send the dog to its retreat as punishment. Keep the baby—and, later, the crawling child—out of this space.

Rehearse baby routines and boundaries
Practice ordinary activities such as carrying, feeding, changing, and rocking while rewarding the dog for settling at a comfortable distance. Walk with an empty stroller so the dog can get used to its movement. Introduce baby sounds gradually, at a volume and duration where the dog remains relaxed; stop or reduce the intensity if it shows signs of discomfort.
If available, let the dog investigate a baby blanket or clothing item at its own pace. Scent exposure is familiarization, not a test of how the dog will behave around the baby. Likewise, one calm response to a doll, recording, or stroller does not establish that the dog is ready for contact with an infant.

Decide whether the dog will be allowed in the nursery and teach the boundary positively before the baby comes home. A properly chosen gate can help keep the dog out of the room or give it a separate resting area. A barrier supports management; it does not replace supervision.
How should you introduce your dog to the baby?
- Plan the first greeting. If your dog tends to jump or gets highly excited, have another adult hold the baby while you greet the dog. Choose a quiet setting and keep the dog under control.
- Start at a comfortable distance. Let the dog notice the baby without requiring it to approach. Reward relaxed behavior with treats, praise, or another reward your dog enjoys.
- Let the dog disengage. Do not insist on sniffing, touching, or staying close. Give the dog a clear path to leave and access to its retreat.
- Pause if the dog changes behavior. If it becomes tense, overly excited, avoidant, or vocal, calmly increase distance and give it a quiet break. Do not punish signs of concern.
- Keep supervising actively. Whenever the dog and baby are in the same space, an adult should be watching and close enough to intervene. If the adult is occupied or leaves the room, separate them with a gate or another reliable barrier.
What signs suggest your dog needs more space?
Stress can be subtle. The American Kennel Club identifies lip licking, yawning, turning the head away, furrowed brows, and ears held low as possible signs a dog needs space. Avoidance, tension, or growling also means the interaction should stop. These signals are communication, not misbehavior to correct.

Calmly guide the dog away to its bed, crate, or gated area, and give it time without the baby nearby. Do not scold or punish growling: suppressing a warning does not make the underlying discomfort safe. If you see fear, aggression, snapping, guarding, or a concern you cannot manage confidently, keep the dog and baby physically separated and seek help from a qualified trainer or veterinary behavior professional experienced with dog–baby transitions.
How does safety change as the baby grows?
A newborn is not mobile, but a crawling or walking child can reach for the dog, its food, or its toys; startle a resting dog; or crowd the dog’s retreat. Revisit your setup as the child develops rather than assuming a successful newborn introduction will remain safe.

- Keep food, water, toys, and resting places out of the child’s reach.
- Make sure the dog has a protected area the child cannot enter.
- Prevent the child from grabbing, pulling, or using the dog to stand.
- Review gates, room access, and supervision whenever the child gains a new way to move or reach.
The American Academy of Pediatrics’ HealthyChildren.org advises keeping pets out of an infant’s sleeping area. Its dog-bite-prevention page says, “Almost 1 in 5 people bitten by dogs require medical attention.” That statistic is not specific to babies or to household introductions, but it underscores why barriers and active supervision matter.

| Option | Useful when | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Pet gate | You need to block nursery access or separate the dog while keeping it in a familiar part of the home. | Choose a barrier that fits the opening and reliably keeps the baby out of the dog’s retreat. A gate is not a substitute for supervision. |
| Crate | Your dog already finds its crate comfortable and can rest there undisturbed. | Do not use a crate as punishment or as a way to make an unsafe interaction safe. Keep the child away from the crate. |
| Bed, mat, or gated room | Your dog needs a quiet place without being confined in a crate. | Teach the dog to use the space, and ensure the baby cannot enter or disturb it. |
For training support, look for a qualified professional with relevant experience and methods based on rewards. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior says classes and at-home training should be based on positive reinforcement with frequent rewards, praise, petting, play, and/or treats.
